Bayern Munich 1-1 Manchester City LIVE! Champions League result, match stream, latest reaction and updates today

Bayern Munich vs Manchester City - LIVE!

Manchester City eased through to the Champions League semi-finals as a 1-1 draw with Bayern Munich proved more than enough to set up a last-four tie with Real Madrid. Taking a three-goal advantage to Munich, Pep Guardiola’s side just needed to avoid a second-leg disaster to secure a clash with the defending champions, and they did just that in comfortable fashion.

Erling Haaland missed a first-half penalty, but he got himself on the scoresheet after the break to put the result beyond doubt after a costly Dayot Upamecano slip, ensuring Joshua Kimmich’s late consolation from the spot, given for an incredible harsh handball decision against Manuel Akanji, had no impact on City’s European progression.

The treble remains on for the Champions League favourites, who now turn their attention to an FA Cup semi-final against Sheffield United before Arsenal arrive at the Etihad for a potential Premier League title decider.

Bernardo Silva’s post-match reaction

22:23 , Matt Verri

“We struggled until February because we couldn’t get in that usual run we had before of winning ten to 15 games in a row, but now we’re very consistent.

“We feel we have a chance in every competition and we’re going for them.”

Semi-final ties confirmed

22:13 , Matt Verri

Two massive last-four ties to look forward to.

Man City up against defending champions Real Madrid next for a place in the final, those will be two brilliant matches.

Elsewhere, the small matter of a Milan derby!

A VERY generous consolation...

FT: Bayern 1-1 Man City (1-4 agg)

22:00 , Matt Verri

Man City have cruised through to the semi-finals.

Kimmich’s late penalty gave Bayern a consolation, but dominance really from City apart from that.

Haaland on target again, as Guardiola’s side set up a semi-final clash with Real Madrid.

21:56 , Matt Verri

90+2 mins: Davies and Walker is a serious battle. Shame we haven’t had more of that.

The Bayern left-back somehow keeps the ball in play, cut back for Mane and he shanks the shot wide. Ederson meanwhile is down with cramp... I find that very hard to believe.

21:54 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Five minutes added on.

City doing a good job of keeping the ball in the corner, winning throw-ins. Not sure that’s entirely needed when 4-1 up on aggregate.

21:52 , Matt Verri

88 mins: Haaland and De Bruyne are off for City, Alvarez and Walker on.

Stanisic kicks out at Grealish who had been twisting him inside and out, brought down on the edge of the area. City in no rush to take this.

21:50 , Matt Verri

86 mins: Tuchel almost on the pitch as Laporte rugby tackles Coman to the floor. As clear a yellow card as you’ll ever see.

And there’s a second yellow for Tuchel, he’s been sent to the stands. That’s been coming for a long, long time.

21:49 , Matt Verri

85 mins: Bayern having a bit more joy now, as Davies absolutely flies down the left wing. Nobody getting near him.

Picks out Tel with the cut back, but he blasts over from the edge of the area.

GOAL! Bayern 1-1 Man City | Joshua Kimmich 83'

21:46 , Matt Verri

There’s one back! Three to go.

Kimmich makes no mistake from the spot.

PENALTY BAYERN!

21:45 , Matt Verri

Dear me. Akanji could not be closer, ball scooped up onto his arm which hasn’t moved at all.

And yet it’s given. Madness.

21:44 , Matt Verri

80 mins: Bayern corner again, though Mane wants a penalty for handball. Never getting that.

VAR are having a look though, never underestimate them...

21:41 , Matt Verri

77 mins: Davies refuses to shoot, Coman refuses to shoot... Bayern corner. Trying to walk the ball into the net.

Comes out to Tel on the edge of the box, he does go for goal and it spins behind for another corner.

Tuchel turns to his bench for a final time. Pavard off, Stanisic on.

GOOOO... OFFSIDE!

21:39 , Matt Verri

Cruel.

Bayern finally do find the back of the City net, but the offside flag is then raised.

Coman was off in the build-up, before Tel turned the ball into the empty net. Won’t count.

21:38 , Matt Verri

74 mins: Davies inside for Tel, looks to turn in the box but Dias just shoves him off it. City defending absolutely brilliantly agan.

Bayern continue to huff and puff but they don’t really look like scoring a goal. City cruising into the semi-finals.

21:35 , Matt Verri

72 mins: Choupo-Moting is off for Tel, while Muller is on to replace Musiala.

Just the four goals needed in 20 minutes, lads...

21:35 , Matt Verri

71 mins: Kimmich with lots of space on the edge of the box, opts not to shoot but instead goes for a very ambitious scooped pass over the top.

Choupo-Moting has three for company, and it’s Laporte who just nods the ball back to Ederson.

21:32 , Matt Verri

68 mins: Musiala slides the pass through to Choupo-Moting in the box, tight angle and it’s a tame effort straight at Ederson.

Choupo-Moting has barely had a kick tonight, not sure he’s fully fit at all. Bayern haven’t been able to ge thim involved.

21:30 , Matt Verri

66 mins: City forced into a change, Ake holding his hamstring as he tells the bench he has to come off. Laporte on to replace him.

Tuchel looking incredibly frustrated on the touchline. He knows his side have played well tonight, nothing at all to show for it though.

21:28 , Matt Verri

64 mins: Mane on to replace Sane - not the warmest handshake you’ll ever see. Davies also on for Cancelo.

Bayern struggling to even get a kick at the moment. Davies wins it back and sets the hosts away, Kimmich from miles out and shoots straight at Ederson.

21:26 , Matt Verri

62 mins: Haaland leads the City press, lets out a huge roar as a heavy Goretzka touch knocks the ball out for a corner.

Away fans can be heard now, pretty much the first time all night. Bayern need more than a miracle.

21:24 , Matt Verri

60 mins: Bayern have had the stuffing knocked out of them. Grealish drives at Pavard, brought down on the edge of the box and it’s yet another yellow card.

Feels like this is now going to be a very long 30 minutes for the hosts.

GOAL! Bayern 0-1 Man City | Erling Haaland 57'

21:22 , Matt Verri

THAT DOES IT!

Bayern go close at one end, Coman driving the ball across the face of goal, but it’s City who have put the result beyond doubt.

The visitors burst away on the counter, Haaland found by De Bruyne, Upamecano slips and Haaland hammers the finish past Sommer.

21:19 , Matt Verri

55 mins: Big chance!

City away on the counter, as De Bruyne slides the pass wide to Grealish. Poked through to Haaland, has De Bruyne free to his left but goes for goal. Straight at Sommer.

De Bruyne NOT impressed.

21:18 , Matt Verri

54 mins: Bayern need to keep moving the ball too quickly, still too much passing around at the back.

They come forward on the right and Ake brings down Pavard, looked to have lost his balance as he closed in. There’s the seventh yellow card of the night.

Someone on the Bayern bench picked one up too, they flew up to complain about that challenge.

21:16 , Matt Verri

52 mins: City lose the ball as Bayern press in numbers, Coman cuts inside and the tame shot is blocked. Pavard then stands a cross up to the back post, Stones swings at thin air but clears at the second time of asking.

Hosts just starting to build the pressure again.

21:13 , Matt Verri

50 mins: Coman slips a cross into the City box, turned behind for the first corner of the half. Huge roar from the home fans, still trying to make a difference.

Sane’s set-piece reaches the first man on the bounce. Tells you all you need to know about that shambles.

21:12 , Matt Verri

48 mins: City very controlled in the early minutes of the second-half.

No sign yet that Bayern are going to go all-out, they still don’t want to take too many risks. That will have to change very soon.

Back underway!

21:09 , Matt Verri

Up and running again in Munich - no changes from either side at the break.

21:03 , Matt Verri

Ten shots, nearly 60% possession... no goals though for Bayern.

They need three in 45 minutes just to send it to extra-time, assuming City don’t care. Really have to throw everything at it now.

Not used to seeing that!

20:57 , Matt Verri

HT: Bayern 0-0 Man City (0-3 agg)

20:52 , Matt Verri

Somehow it’s goalless!

Haaland blasted a penalty over, while Bayern have had chances. Coman has been brilliant, while Sane wasted a huge early opportunity.

Tie is still just about alive, but City have complete control.

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

20:52 , Matt Verri

45+2 mins: Things boiled over there, Kimmich and Gundogan into the book.

Kimmich tried to kick the ball away from Gundogan as he was lying on it, the City man jumped up and reacted. All very pointless.

20:51 , Matt Verri

45+1 mins: Two minutes added on.

Not sure how it’s only that. We had that alone for the penalty, and then there’s the Upamecano decision and plenty of time-wasting elsewhere. Could easily have been four or five.

Bayern are really pushing deep into stoppage-time, Musiala slips but cuts the ball back. Choupo-Moting from a few yards out... blocked! And then so is Coman’s shot!

20:48 , Matt Verri

44 mins: As he did plenty of times last week, Sane tries his luck from distance. Drags the shot wide.

And that’s been coming for about half an hour, Ederson into the book for time-wasting. Wouldn’t say it’s hurried him up much though.

20:47 , Matt Verri

43 mins: Sane jinks into the box, backheels the ball to Coman and he lashes an effort straight at Ederson. Parried away.

Bayern have definitely had their moments in attack, just needed a better final ball or a more composed finish when Sane was clean through.

20:46 , Matt Verri

41 mins: City taking their time over every goal-kick and free-kick, Bayern fans getting frustrated.

Sane briefly threatens to lead a Bayern counter, but he’s swiftly surrounded and can only poke the ball straight out of play.

20:43 , Matt Verri

38 mins: He had to wait a long time for that, was a couple of stoppages before he eventually took the penalty.

Well then. That has given the crowd a lift, can Bayern take advantage of that let-off and get one back? Kimmich tries to do just that, fires over from distance.

HAALAND MISSES!

20:41 , Matt Verri

And I do mean misses!

Blazes the penalty over the bar, that was wild from Haaland. Bayern still have hope.

20:40 , Matt Verri

Upamecano started with his arms behind his back, but then moved his left one out as the shot came in. Did take a flick off it.

VAR not overturning this.

PENALTY CITY!

20:39 , Matt Verri

34 mins: City having a dominant spell of possession, Bayern struggling to get near them. Crowd have gone quiet as a result.

Rodri loses it though, Bayern can break. Musiala runs straight into a wall of yellow shirts though and now here come City.

Shot is deflected, saved by Sommer. But a penalty has been given! Handball against Upamecano, and a yellow card. Wow.

That earlier chaos...

20:37 , Matt Verri

20:35 , Matt Verri

31 mins: City are defending these crosses into the box so well. Bayern carving City open down the right, but nothing coming from it. Again and again the ball in is cleared away.

Corner for the hosts, fired to the near post and Choupo-Moting flicks a header over the bar.

Ederson has gone down, which gives Guardiola a chance to call Bernardo over. Looks to be an issue with Ederson’s left hand, but he’s up and fine to continue.

20:34 , Matt Verri

29 mins: Pavard on the right dinks a ball back to Musiala, first touch gets the ball out of his body and is about to let fly when he gets a shove from behind from Rodri.

No foul though, which goes down about as well as you’d expect with Tuchel. City fortunate there, should have been a free-kick just outside the box in a central position.

20:33 , Matt Verri

28 mins: So, almost 30 minutes gone of the second leg. Tuchel called for his side to win each half as a minimum, they’re running out of time to achieve the first part of that.

They haven’t conceded though, so still just about in it.

20:30 , Matt Verri

25 mins: Coman has been Bayern’s best player by a mile, and he’s switched over to the opposite flank down. He’s now attacking Akanji on the left, with Sane shifting over to the right.

Stones looks to drive down the right, gets a shove from Musiala but the whistle doesn’t go. City man less than impressed.

20:28 , Matt Verri

23 mins: Better spell this for Bayern, starting to sustain their attacks a bit better.

Grealish has barely had a kick for City, who have had less than 40% of the ball in the opening quarter of this match.

Here come Bayern again, Sane lays the ball back to Goretzka and he balloons an effort miles over.

20:25 , Matt Verri

21 mins: Crowd right up for it again after that drama, with Tuchel shown a yellow card as he continues to moan at anyone who will listen.

Bayern have a free-kick out wide, Sane goes for goal from a tight angle and Ederson turns it behind for a corner.

20:24 , Matt Verri

20 mins: Bayern survive!

Haaland is through this time, brought down by Upamecano and the red card comes out!

The City striker is offside though, replays shows, and the decision is overturned. Bayern have a huge let-off.

20:21 , Matt Verri

17mins: BIG MISS!

There is a huge chance. Bayern cut City open, as Musiala slides the ball through and there’s no catching Sane.

Only Ederson to beat, dinks it over the goalkeeper but dragged wide of the far post.

20:20 , Matt Verri

16 mins: Bayern doing a lot right but the important bit has been terrible.

Pavard the man free on the right as Bayern work it nicely, but it’s an awful attempt at a cross and they have to turn all the way back.

A better final ball and the hosts could have already had a couple of big chances.

20:18 , Matt Verri

13 mins: Coman makes that same run in behind, goes down under pressure from Dias. That was a very cynical trip from the City defender, not sure how he got away with that.

Coman would probably have been offside anyway, but a strange decision from Dias.

20:15 , Matt Verri

11 mins: It’s all coming down that side for Bayern. Coman again is played through, cut back this time is behind everyone. They haven’t been able to get that final ball right.

Cancelo then earns himself a yellow card against his parent club, lunges in on Silva. Harsh for that to be a yellow card.

20:13 , Matt Verri

9 mins: More like it from Bayern, Coman again the main causing the problems. In behind Ake on the right, cross fired into the six-yard box but too much on it for Choupo-Moting.

Sane keeps it in plays, puts a cross in of his own but again the City centre-backs are up to the task. Bayern looking to whip the ball in at every opportunity.

20:12 , Matt Verri

7 mins: De Ligt clatters into De Bruyne, that will be a City free-kick. Right in front of Tuchel, who gets a warning from the referee for his very strong complaints.

Relatively low-key start to the match, which will suit the visitors just fine.

20:08 , Matt Verri

4 mins: Sommer wasn’t exactly full of confidence at the Etihad and it’s not the best of starts here. Tries to pass it along the byline to De Ligt, closed down swiftly by Silva and behind for a goal kick.

No sign of City sitting back and looking to just hold on to what they have, that’s for sure.

20:07 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Good start from Bayern, Coman swings in a brilliant cross and Choupo-Moting isn’t far away at all from getting on the end of it in the middle.

Remains to be seen how fit the Bayern striker is, but he’ll definitely give the hosts something they didn’t have last week.

KICK-OFF!

20:04 , Matt Verri

We’re underway in the second leg! Comfortable City progression, or Bayern miracle?

Time to find out.

Still we wait...

20:04 , Matt Verri

Referee has gone missing. Assume there must be some technical issues to fix.

For now, players all standing there a bit confused. Incredible atmosphere being created by the home fans.

Here we go!

19:58 , Matt Verri

Teams are out onto the pitch at the Allianz, kick-off coming up very shortly.

So important Bayern make a quick start and get the first goal. If City score first, it’s tie over really.

Tuchel: Cancelo won’t play in midfield

19:56 , Matt Verri

“No, we don’t change positions today.

“We don’t have enough time for that and he will play for Alphonso Davies who lacks a bit of form and self-confidence at the moment.

“It’s always a challenge to have one guy who plays against his former team. We hope he has some shots and assists from half-field.”

Not exactly bright sunshine in Munich...

19:54 , Matt Verri

19:49 , Matt Verri

Interesting from Tuchel pre-match, who says Bayern’s mindset is to win both halves rather than thinking they must score four goals tonight.

Win the first and second half and that’s a two-goal advantage for the hosts, only one away from the margin they need to force extra-time.

Easier said than done, mind....

Wenger has spoken!

19:43 , Matt Verri

Pavard: It is possible

19:37 , Matt Verri

Benjamin Pavard has insisted Bayern Munich are still capable of winning this tie and reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League.

“We had a good first half in the first leg against City,” the Bayern full-back said. “We’ll be very disappointed if we don’t win.

“We are highly motivated and in fine form. We’ve seen in the past that a comeback like this is possible.”

30 minutes to go!

19:32 , Matt Verri

It’s been done before!

19:25 , Matt Verri

Tough, but not impossible.

Four teams have won a Champions League tie after losing the first leg by a three-goal margin, with the most recent of those comebacks coming from Liverpool as they stunned Barcelona in the 2018/19 season.

There is still, just about, some hope.

Treble is very much on...

19:18 , Matt Verri

City obviously favourites to come through tonight and set up a Real Madrid semi-final clash, as they look to win the Champions League for the first time.

FA Cup semi final next up this weekend against Sheffield United, before attention turns back to the Premier League as Arsenal visit the Etihad.

Huge week coming up - every chance City are well-placed for the treble by the end of it.

More to come?

Tuchel: Need to believe in ourselves

19:01 , Matt Verri

Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel has conceded that his side need “a miracle” to overturn the deficit against the Champions League favourites tonight.

“I don’t know if talking about a 4-0 or 5-1 is appropriate — you need to be realistic — but we believe in ourselves,” the German said. “If we manage to play a good first half, we can make it happen in the second. Everything is possible.

“It’s a huge mountain to climb and that’s why we need to believe in ourselves but we don’t want to be dreamers. Dreaming for me is always close to sleeping — and you cannot sleep for one second.”

Inside the home dressing room...

Choupo-Moting returns

18:46 , Matt Verri

Big boost for Bayern to have Choupo-Moting back and leading the line, a job Gnabry was given at the Etihad. It’s the same three of Sane, Musiala and Coman behind, meaning Mane and Muller are again on the bench.

Cancelo starts against his parent club, coming in to replace Davies at left-back.

For City, it’s as we expected. Bernardo gets the nod over Mahrez on the right wing, with Stones once again taking up his hybrid right-back/midfield role. Foden back in the squad and on the bench.

Defending champions waiting in the last four

18:31 , Matt Verri

Real Madrid in the semi-finals is the prize for whoever makes it through this tie.

The holders, and 14-time champions, eased through last night with another 2-0 win over Chelsea, and Carlo Ancelotti’s side look well-placed for another charge at European glory.

Looks like being Man City vs Real Madrid for a place in the final, with Inter Milan vs AC Milan potentially the other semi-final. Not bad.

Bayern need something special

18:25 , Matt Verri

Bayern have a very impressive record at home in Europe this season, as they’ve reminded everyone.

Problem is, a repeat of those 2-0 wins won’t be enough tonight. They have to score three just to take it to extra-time... and that’s only if they keep a clean sheet!

Guardiola dismisses defensive plan

18:19 , Matt Verri

Pep Guardiola has urged his Manchester City players to put Bayern Munich to the sword in tonight’s Champions League quarter-final, despite their comfortable first-leg lead.

“We are focused a lot on what we want to do, trying not just to control the game but punish them, trying to score, understand the game and not just the fact we are here in Munich against one of the most prestigious, historic teams in this competition,” Guardiola said.

“I don’t understand a situation just to come here and defend something. We come here to play a football game, 11 men against 11.

“We try to do better than the opponent in this specific game.”

How City took control

18:09 , Matt Verri

It was a great night in Manchester for City last week, to put it mildly.

Rodri’s stunner put them in front, before Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland struck as Bayern fell apart late on. It leaves Tuchel’s side needing something very, very, very, very, very special tonight.

Rainy evening in Germany!

18:01 , Matt Verri

Standard Sport prediction

17:55 , Matt Verri

Pep Guardiola will back his City side to get a result on the night to ensure they maintain their momentum, even with that three-goal advantage as a safety net.

It’s tricky to see Bayern getting anywhere close to overturning their deficit.

A 1-1 draw, Man City to win 4-1 on aggregate.

Man City team news

17:48 , Matt Verri

Phil Foden will return to Manchester City’s squad for tonight’s Champions League clash.

Pep Guardiola brought the midfielder back into training earlier this week after an operation to remove his appendix three weeks earlier, but is confident he will not need long to get up to speed.

The visitors are likely to line up in the 3-2-4-1 system that has worked wonders for Guardiola in recent weeks. John Stones could continue in midfield alongside Rodri with Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake returning to the defence after being benched on the weekend.

Ilkay Gundogan is competing for a runout alongside Kevin De Bruyne in the centre of the park, with Bernardo Silva and Riyad Mahrez options on the right flank.

Predicted Man City XI: Ederson; Akanji, Dias, Ake; Stones, Rodri; Silva, Gundogan, De Bruyne, Grealish; Haaland.

Bayern team news

Sadio Mane is back in contention for Bayern after being dropped by Tuchel and fined north of £260,000 for punching teammate Leroy Sane following the defeat in Manchester.

Serge Gnabry may continue up front if Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting cannot shake off a knee issue. Lucas Hernandez and Manuel Neuer are long-term injury absentees.
