Mikel Arteta has revealed that Ben White is an option to play in midfield to solve Arsenal’s selection issues.

Arsenal are currently short on numbers in the middle of the pitch, with Granit Xhaka absent after contracting Covid-19.

Mohamed Elneny and Thomas Partey are away at the Africa Cup of Nations, meaning Albert Sambi Lokonga is the only fit, senior central midfielder available ahead of Thursday’s trip to Liverpool.

Centre-back White has been mooted as a possible solution, having played in midfield for his previous club Brighton.

And asked if White was an option, Arteta said: “It’s an option that we have. He has played there before.

“He has played as a central defender, he’s played as a right-back and he’s played in a back three. That’s one of the positive things with Ben, that he has the capacity to play in different roles.”

Arsenal are looking to bolster their squad during the current transfer window and a new midfielder is on their shortlist.

Juventus’ Arthur Melo has been offered to them on loan, but the Italian club want to sort a replacement before signing off on any deal.

Arsenal specifically targeted young players last summer, not signing anyone aged over 23, but Arteta has hinted that policy will not remain in place forever.

“The project has different phases and each phase we have to accomplish certain targets and objectives,” he said.

“When you start to remodel the squad into a much healthier position then it is the moment you can evolve and start to make other decisions in relation to a lot of things that happen. It’s not just intention, it’s about what happens as well with many other players.”
