The South Bank looks to rival Alexandra Palace’s Terrace for the title of “London’s biggest beer garden”, as the riverside walkway welcomes Between the Bridges, a 4000 square foot venue boasting food, music and plenty to drink.

The new al fresco space will open on Thursday May 27, with bars, street food pop-ups and a summer of music planned, with sets scheduled from Gilles Peterson, Crazy P, Suggs of Madness and Norman Jay MBE, alongside the likes of Guilty Pleasures, Old Dirty Brasstards, Raw Silk and Raf Rundell.

Put together by the co-founders of Cross the Tracks and Mighty Hoopla, the spot – which will be free to enter, aside from a £5 charge on Friday and Saturday nights – will also offer food from the likes of vegan specialists Club Mexicana, meat-lovers Flank OG, pizzaiolos Born & Raised and Camden Market pasta specialists the Cheese Wheel who, as the name suggests, finish their dishes in a hollowed out wheel of Grana Padano. There will be three bars with seating dotted throughout.

Other draws include regular drag brunches hosted RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Lawrence Chaney and featuring series favourites Baga Chipz, Tayce and Ginny Lemon. Organiser say to expect live performances, lip sync battles and death drops. There will also be weekly craft markets, mini-golf and an area set up for tejo, a traditional Colombian throwing game infamous for its use of gunpowder. The stand is thought to be the first of its kind in the UK.

Marcus Weedon, the director of Between The Bridges said of the announcement: “We’re very excited to bring this brand new event series to this huge and iconic space on London’s South Bank.

“Celebrating the best in London culture, Between The Bridges will provide entertainment, activities, food, and drinks for everyone and we have worked hard to guarantee this will be London’s most exciting programme across summer 2021. We have taken careful steps to ensure safety is at the forefront of all of our event plans and location design and we can’t wait to open our doors this May and welcome the world to London’s most exciting location this summer.”
