Burnley Fan View: Our biggest point of the season so far

After coming back from a 1-0 deficit to level the game at 1-1, I believe Burnley’s second away point of the season is our most crucial yet.

I said before the game that the upcoming fixtures to see out February and the whole of March look very ominous for us. 10 points of security between us and 18th would normally fill me with confidence but our away form up until yesterday was dismal reading: Played 11 Won 0 Drawn 1 Lost 10.

Part of this is down to our opponents, we have played 8 of the current top 10, with only trips to Anfield (this month) and Goodison Park yet to come. Of the bottom 7 teams w
e have only played Leicester City away this season, back when they still looked half decent.

Despite the results, our recent away performances are much improved. Our 5 consecutive away defeats have come by way of a one goal margin, stretching back to December the third.

The above makes me think we can start to pick up points away from home and this is why turning the tide against Hull was so important, keeping the relegation candidates at arms length is vital, and drawing against Hull, Swansea and Sunderland would probably be better than beating one and losing to the other two. We need to prevent them from picking up points against us.

The game was lacking much goalmouth action, however Burnley seemed to create the most threatening opportunities, with Ben Mee coming close from a set piece in the first half.

Burnley carved open Hull in the second half when Gray raced through, but his finish just slipped past the far post. Shortly after though, a ball played into the box struck Michael Keane on the hand, and the resulting penalty was converted, despite Tom Heaton getting a good hand on it.

Less than five minutes later though, Michael Keane atoned for his error, he superbly controlled the ball from a corner at the back post and volleyed it into the net, shades of Zlatan Ibrahimovic about his touch and powerful finish.

Hull might’ve won it late on but the only other action was from a second yellow for Ashley Barnes for an elbow, he will now miss the trip to Swansea.

There is a long way to go before we can say we have accomplished survival but this point was huge in my opinion. The fact we came from behind to draw makes it even sweeter. Swansea will be very difficult to beat and they are in very good form under new manager Paul Clement. I’d bite your hands off for a draw.
