Jordan Romano might get some flak from his teammates because of his latest injury. Not so much the injury itself, but rather what caused it.

The Toronto Blue Jays closer is out day-to-day during Spring Training action with a mild ankle sprain he succumbed to while walking his dog.

According to Toronto manager Charlie Montoyo, the 28-year-old pitcher isn't expected to miss an extended period of time with the injury, but it happened when he stepped on a hole in the road. If it was anything more serious, Blue Jays fans might have been marching down south to the local Dunedin town council to get their potholes fixed immediately.

Romano saw his stock significantly rise last season when he became the confirmed closer for the Blue Jays, finishing the season in that role with a 2.14 ERA and 1.048 WHIP in 63 innings. Previously, his career-high was 15.1 innings pitched in a season.

Awkward injuries are nothing new for the Blue Jays. Just four years ago during the 2018 season, pitcher Aaron Sanchez was out with a finger injury for a substantial amount of time. Later, he came clean that it was due to his right index finger getting stuck in a suitcase that was falling during a road trip.

Being sidelined for a few days with an ankle injury that no doubt every dog owner's experienced at least once is certainly not as embarrassing and fluky as the suitcase finger. Still, it might be fodder for some clubhouse fun.

Romano also made headlines earlier this month, when the Markham, Ont., native announced he'd pitch for Italy instead of Canada in the upcoming World Baseball Classic.

The Blue Jays continue their Spring Training schedule on Thursday against the Detroit Tigers before opening their 2022 campaign at home against the Texas Rangers on April 8 at Rogers Centre.
