Borussia Dortmund vs Chelsea LIVE!

Borussia Dortmund snatched a 1-0 victory over Chelsea in their Champions League last-16 first leg on Wednesday courtesy of Karim Adeyemi's 63rd-minute goal to stretch their winning run to seven matches in all competitions this year.

Germany international Adeyemi sprinted more than 60 yards and slotted home against the run of play to give his team the advantage going into the return leg in London on March 7.

Big-spending Chelsea's efficiency in front of goal has been an issue for the Premier League club this season with only one win in 2023, and it was evident again.

They missed a number of good chances, including hitting the woodwork through Joao Felix but failed to find an equaliser with Dortmund keeper Gregor Kobel denying Enzo Fernandez in stoppage-time.

Chelsea’s players put in a solid shift against Borussia Dortmund as they fell to a 1-0 defeat in the Champions League, but the overall lack of a killer instinct was exposed at both ends.

Enzo Fernandez failed to deal with Karim Adeyemi for the matchwinner while, in attack, Joao Felix was particularly wasteful with his shooting.

FULL TIME! Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Chelsea

21:56 , Marc Mayo

The Blues beaten in Germany!

21:56 , Marc Mayo

90+5 mins: WHAT A SAVE!

Advantage played as Chelsea attack an Fernandez’s shot is top-corner bound before Kobel’s flying save denies him!

21:55 , Marc Mayo

90+4 mins: Cucurella has two chances to cross, the first hitting the near-post defender and the second looping far too deep.

Time running out for Chelsea...

21:52 , Marc Mayo

90+1 mins: Ziyech’s corner easily gathered by Kobel.

21:51 , Marc Mayo

90 mins: It’s all kicking off now in the dugouts as Ryerson is booked and Chelsea are NOT happy!

Plenty of passion and not much of a temper out on the pitch as the referee attempts to regain control.

Sule and Mount also yellow carded. Azpilicueta went chasing down the line to get the ball and the Dortmund defender flew in, kicking it all of.

21:49 , Marc Mayo

88 mins: Pressure eased as Cucurella bundles into the back of Ryerson to concede a foul in the box.

21:47 , Marc Mayo

86 mins: Wide and altogether a bit tame from Ziyech at the free-kick.

21:46 , Marc Mayo

85 mins: Ozcan booked for tripping Felix in another promising spot for the Blues.

21:45 , Marc Mayo

83 mins: Felix collects a quick turnaround by Fernandez, picks his spot... and drills it straight at the goalkeeper.

It’s not been the Portuguese striker’s night.

Penalty appeal!

21:43 , Marc Mayo

81 mins: Another threatening Dortmund break but James gets in smartly to deny Modeste.

Havertz gets up the other end quickly and Sule dives in... the referee says he got the ball!

21:40 , Marc Mayo

79 mins: That’ll do for Adeyemi, the potential matchwinner replaced by ex-Chelsea academy player Bynoe-Gittens.

Chelsea chance!

21:39 , Marc Mayo

78 mins: OFF THE LINE!

Can hacks away Koulibaly’s shot after it’s spilled by Kobel!

21:38 , Marc Mayo

77 mins: Better from Ziyech to win a foul off Adeyemi on the edge of the box, the goalscorer taking a yellow card.

Ziyech takes and it’s easy for Kobel to punch clear.

21:37 , Marc Mayo

75 mins: Growing pressure from Chelsea but Dortmund buoyed by that goal, extra zip about their play and really hot in the press.

21:33 , Marc Mayo

72 mins: Ziyech furious at conceding a free-kick for clattering Adeyemi, more at the circumstances than the foul really, and he’s booked for his troubles.

Ryerson on for Wolf at right-back for Dortmund.

21:32 , Marc Mayo

70 mins: Chelsea changes coming up.

Cucurella and Mount replace Chilwell and Mudryk.

Meanwhile, multiple complaints of pints thrown at the press box with that goal! If that happens in the Premier League, there would be a Government-led inquiry and calls for a points deduction...

21:29 , Marc Mayo

68 mins: Modeste on for Haller, some much-needed fresh legs up front for the home team.

 (REUTERS)
(REUTERS)

21:28 , Marc Mayo

66 mins: Wolf will continue and wants to come back on as Dortmund attack. Big test for Chelsea now.

21:27 , Marc Mayo

65 mins: A problem for Dortmund after the goal as Chelsea attack and Wolf goes down hurt.

GGGGOOOOOOAAAALLLL!!! Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Chelsea

21:24 , Marc Mayo

63 mins: WHAT A COUNTER BY ADEYEMI!

Chelsea come close with a header across goal that somehow is diverted away - the offside flag going up.

But the advantage is played as Dortmund pounce and Adeyemi creams Fernandez for pace, before he rounds Kepa and rolls home!

21:23 , Marc Mayo

62 mins: SAVE!

Mudryk and Felix combine and the cross is taken up by James upon a soft clearance.

Ziyech sets up the defender, whose powerful effort bounces high and is tipped over!

21:22 , Marc Mayo

60 mins: Chilwell stays down after battling to win a corner down the left flank.

Worrying for Chelsea, he’s had a good game so far having only just returned from injury.

For now, he’ll continue as Felix’s corner is punched away.

21:19 , Marc Mayo

57 mins: Better from Borussia, Brandt teed up to place a shot from 18 yards and Kepa falls on it at his near post. Haller was lurking trying to turn it in...

Down the other end, Fernandez’s long-range hit is held by Kobel.

21:17 , Marc Mayo

56 mins: That was the first shot on target today - with the 20th attempt combined between the teams!

21:16 , Marc Mayo

54 mins: Great save!

Kobel leaps to his left to palm away James’ curled effort that beat the wall and was destined for the net.

21:14 , Marc Mayo

52 mins: Borussia look to wrestle back some momentum with a calm spell of possession yet Chelsea snatch it back and James bombs on to win a free-kick in a great spot, just outside the D.

Can booked for barging the right-back down.

21:12 , Marc Mayo

50 mins: Really good start to the half from Chelsea and Koulibaly pops up in attack, feeding Havertz before Fernandez cuts to his left and rockets a shot into a sturdy Dortmund body.

21:09 , Marc Mayo

47 mins: Mudryk does brilliantly to pick out a run in behind by Chilwell and Can turns the ball behind for a corner.

The goalkeeper somewhat unconvincingly palms the ball clear - but it works.

First-half highlight: Joao Felix comes close

Here come the players!

21:05 , Marc Mayo

One goal either way could prove the defining moment in this tie.

Around the grounds

21:02 , Marc Mayo

No goals at all in the Champions League tonight after 45 minutes in Germany and Belgium, where Club Brugge are playing Benfica in their last-16 tie.

It’s 1-1 between Arsenal and Manchester City in the Premier League.

Nizaar Kinsella at Signal Iduna Park

20:58 , Marc Mayo

That’s the best half from Chelsea since well before the World Cup. Joao Felix has massively uplifted Graham Potter’s side, while Mykhailo Mudryk is a great outlet with his pace.

Enzo Fernandez is tidy in midfield and Ruben Loftus-Cheek seems the perfect partner.

Stats check

20:53 , Marc Mayo

We’ve had 16 shots and zero on target from the teams in that half, 11 to Dortmund and five to Chelsea.

Borussia leading 60-40 per cent on possession and they’ve had 50 per cent more passes, too.

Lots of corners, for those counting, five to four to the Germans.

Half-time! Borussia Dortmund 0-0 Chelsea

20:49 , Marc Mayo

45 mins: Loftus-Cheek covers Adeyemi’s break after he stole the ball of Ziyech, leaving the Moroccan in a pained heap.

And that’s the half!

20:47 , Marc Mayo

42 mins: Wolf fires wide by a whisker!

Brandt sends Chilwell for a frankfurter with a cute cutback and he tees up Wolf, the right-back curling his effort across the face of goal and just off-target.

20:45 , Marc Mayo

40 mins: We have two teams with lots of quality and yet both lack that clinical edge in the box. It’s making for a very even, quite unpredictable tie and it’s anyone’s guess who will break the deadlock.

Both look capable!

Speaking of which, Chilwell fires in a good low cross which Dortmund survive.

Chelsea chance!

20:42 , Marc Mayo

37 mins: FELIX RATTLES THE WOODWORK!

Set up by Havertz in space, he goes left-footed in a one-on-one and cannot finish the chance.

20:37 , Marc Mayo

34 mins: Back up the other end and Adeyemi lashes over from 20 yards.

Just over ten minutes left of an even half!

Joao Felix has been the star so far but has missed an absolute sitter after a great cut back by Hakim Ziyech.

Chelsea chance!

20:36 , Marc Mayo

31 mins: Felix fires over from Ziyech’s great pass! Chelsea’s moment of the game so far.

20:34 , Marc Mayo

30 mins: Ziyech wins a smart free-kick up the right wing but James’ delivery is far too underhit.

A cheeky lift back into the box by Fernandez reaches Koulibaly in a good spot... and the flag goes up.

Dortmund chance!

20:31 , Marc Mayo

27 mins: No midfield protection for the Chelsea backline whatsoever and Haller is slipped in.

Firing at the near-post under pressure from Koulibaly, he hits the side netting. The Blues escape!

Nizaar Kinsella at Signal Iduna Park

20:31 , Marc Mayo

Jude Bellingham looks really dangerous in midfield and is getting the better of Enzo Fernandez, who appears to be man marking him.

20:30 , Marc Mayo

25 mins: The best move the hosts have produced falls to Adeyemi, albeit from a bit of a scrappy counter and Haller could have shot when he rolled in the winger.

A sturdy block meets his effort and Chelsea bring it out to win a foul.

20:28 , Marc Mayo

23 mins: Dortmund continue to crank up the pressure, Adeyemi looking a threat too - but no killer pass into the box to find Haller yet.

20:25 , Marc Mayo

21 mins: Bellingham getting into the game now, placing a cheeky flick into no man’s land before having a shot deflected wide for a corner.

And he gives the Yellow Wall behind the goal a big come-on-then to try and raise the volume even further!

Kepa claims the looping ball in, though.

Dortmund chance!

20:23 , Marc Mayo

18 mins: Brandt is turned goalwards by Bellingham and Chilwell puts the pressure on, leaving the winger flailing a leg at the ball and scuffing a shot wide.

Kepa fortunate to have not been tested, there.

GOA-NO!

20:21 , Marc Mayo

16 mins: A low free-kick whipped in by James hits the net... but the whistle goes and a yellow card shown to Silva!

Handball, no doubt.

Nizaar Kinsella at Signal Iduna Park

20:19 , Marc Mayo

Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali have travelled to this match by the way. They have seen another bright start by Chelsea but can they sustain it?

20:18 , Marc Mayo

14 mins: Decent Chelsea break but Ziyech was completely free in the box for so long as Havertz waited before crossing a tame ball in, flicked out for a corner.

Just a little bit more ruthless there and they could have forged a big chance.

20:17 , Marc Mayo

12 mins: The two teams trade corners, Dortmund heading out Chelsea’s ball in before Guerreiro lines up an out-swinger.

Havertz then Silva nod out before Can’s rocket from outside the box is deflected wide.

20:14 , Marc Mayo

10 mins: Dortmund showing off their talents with some tiki-taka build-up, through Brandt and Adeyemi in particular before Koulibaly sticks in another vital foot clear.

20:13 , Marc Mayo

8 mins: A fairly harsh early yellow card for James, for arriving late with a bit of stud landed on Adeyemi in a challenge for the ball.

Nizaar Kinsella at Signal Iduna Park

20:12 , Marc Mayo

Mykailo Mudryk is looking dangerous early on with Ben Chilwell backing him up on the left and just outpaced Marius Wolf to almost create something for Havertz.

(AFP via Getty Images)

20:10 , Marc Mayo

5 mins: A 4-4-2 for Chelsea off the ball with Felix and Havertz highest forward, Mudryk and Ziyech wide alongside the midfield duo in the centre.

20:08 , Marc Mayo

3 mins: Havertz the next to dart towards the box and Kobel comes out to grab his heavy touch, winning a fairly soft foul in the process.

20:06 , Marc Mayo

2 mins: A good left-to-right move from Dortmund demands Koulibaly then Fernandez throw in important interventions.

But Chelsea break! And Mudryk races forward with great pace and only a stunning slide tackle by Schlotterbeck prevents him from firing off a shot!

“Ben Chilwell coming in for Marc Cucurella and gives us a different type of profile for that position.

“We’ve been building him up with regards to his fitness and I think he is ready to start tonight.”

Jesus Gil Manzano will referee tonight’s match, the 39-year-old Spaniard having entered FIFA’s list in 2014.

Countdown to kick-off

19:29 , Marc Mayo

Just over half an hour to kick-off in Dortmund.

Chelsea have won 11 of their 25 games against German opposition in European competition, with a goal difference of plus-14.

If you take out Bayern Munich (one win in six) then that record looks even better!

What can we expect of Jude Bellingham tonight?

19:24 , Marc Mayo

Reportedly a transfer target for Chelsea (and just about anyone), Bellingham has a reasonable ten goals to his name this campaign.

But it’s his all-round game, so clearly on show at the World Cup, that the England international has developed.

And Dortmund boss Edin Terzic waxed lyrical about Bellingham ahead of the game.

He told the Telegraph: “He’s outstanding. On and off the pitch. He’s very hungry, he wants to learn, he wants to adapt…he will be one of the best players in the world for the next decade.

“I have been lucky enough also to work with Declan Rice at the same age. With both of them – Declan [Rice] and Jude – the England national team don’t have to worry for the next 10 years in the central midfield position.”

Joe Cole oozes confidence for Chelsea’s Champions League chances

19:11 , Marc Mayo

Nizaar spoke to former Chelsea star Joe Cole ahead of tonight’s game - and he rates the Blues’ chances of lifting the trophy come May.

“It’s definitely possible,” BT Sport pundit Cole told Standard Sport. “Chelsea have a chance, that’s 100 percent for sure.

“It’s the pinnacle of European club football to climb that mountain. It will be welcome for the players to have it in the back of their minds like a welcome distraction.

“It could also be the one big performance in a big game to turn the confidence.”

Goals remain a problem for Graham Potter’s side despite the amount of money spent on attacking talent, and they now come up against a Dortmund side that have won all five of their Bundesliga games since the World Cup.
