Former England captain Michael Vaughan is really happy to see Rory Burns and Haseeb Hameed put on a fifty partnership on Day 1 of the ongoing Headingley Test against India. This was after England pacers had bowled the visitors out for a total of 78.

England have ringed in changes for the third Test after escaping a draw in the first and bowling out themselves in the second. Their batting has been under scrutiny and have faced heavy criticism this year for their over-reliance on skipper Joe Root.

Zak Crawley was dropped for Hameed ahead of the second Test. Dom Sibley, who has been the opening partner for Rory Burns since last year, was dropped for the third Test. Dawid Malan got a recall after three years and Hameed has been promoted to open alongside Burns.

While England must have felt in a dominant position after their bowlers had routed India for low total inside two sessions, they wouldn’t have been done with their concerns as their top-order has been like a thin paper this year.

However, on Wednesday, the new opening pair clicked. Hameed, who is making a comeback to the Test side four years after his debut series in 2016, and Burns, England’s trusted opener since Alastair Cook, have put on 62 runs in 24 overs, at the time of writing.

They would have had nerves going in against a strong 4-pronged Indian pace attack, but those settled down soon when Ishant Sharma sprayed a few erratic deliveries which were cashed on. The pair was up and running in quick time with 21 runs in 7 overs at Tea.

Post Tea, while Bumrah and Shami tightened the crews, occasional boundaries kept coming and as much pressure wasn’t created as Virat Kohli would have hoped for. There were a couple of edges that fell short of slips, and a few plays and misses, but luck, as with the bowlers earlier, was with the English batsmen. They dominated the loose balls while respected the good ones.
