Boys basketball: Johnson leads Owls in win at Greensburg

Feb. 14—GREENSBURG — Seymour Jaylan Johnson scored 25 points, double his season average, Tuesday to help lead the Owls to a 48-40 victory over Greensburg.

Seymour improves to 16-4 on the season. The Pirates drop to 14-7 and host South Ripley (11-8) Saturday.

Neither offense got off to a great start. Greensburg finally broke the ice with a free throw by Drew Busick followed by an Addison Barnes-Pettit 3-pointer. A Johnson lay-up got the Owls on the board. The Pirates pushed the lead to 7-2 on free throws by Busick and Jack McKinsey.

A 3-pointer by Parker Thompson started a run by Seymour. Two Thompson free throws closed the first quarter with Seymour on top 8-7.

Seymour scored the first four points of the second quarter. A Michael Brooks steal and lay-up extended the run to 10-0. Busick's bucket for the Pirates stopped the spurt. Later in the quarter, Brady Harpe hit a 3-pointer to give the Owls a 17-11 lead. Busick had the answer on the other end with a deep 3-pointer to get the Pirates back within three.

A McKinsey jumper cut the deficit to one, but Seymour's Harpe banked in a 3-pointer from the center logo to put the Owls on top 20-16 at the break.

Seymour scored the first five points of the third quarter before Busick hit a right wing 3-pointer for the Pirates. Four straight from Johnson had the Seymour lead up to 10 points at 29-19.

Greensburg's Barnes-Pettit drained 4-of-4 free throws to close the third quarter with Seymour holding a 39-23 lead.

A McKinsey bucket for the Pirates opened the fourth quarter, but Johnson countered for Seymour with five straight points.

Trailing by seven, Greensburg got a tough bucket in the lane by Barnes-Pettit and two Busick free throws to get Greensburg within three at 37-34 with more than three minutes to play in the game.

Seymour answered with 6-of-6 at the charity stripe to stretch the lead out to 43-34. Greensburg got to within six on two Bradley Lutz free throws, but the Pirates could not get all the way back and fell to the Owls 48-40.

The Pirates were led by Busick with 14 points. Barnes-Pettit added 11 points. McKinsey finished with nine points. Adkins had three points and Lutz finished with two points.

Batesville

BROOKVILLE — On the road at Franklin County, the Bulldogs jumped out to a big early lead and cruised to a 55-26 win.

The Bulldogs move to 15-5 on the season and 5-2 in the EIAC. Franklin County drops to 7-14 overall and 1-5 in the EIAC.

Batesville led 11-2 after the first quarter and extended the lead in the second quarter with a 20-7 run. At the break, the Bulldogs were in control, up 31-9.

The Bulldogs double-up the Wildcats 14-7 in the third quarter. Both teams scored 10 points in the final eight minutes as Batesville rolled to the 55-26 win.

Batesville shot 49 percent from the field and held Franklin County to 30 percent from the field. The Bulldogs were 7-of-17 from beyond the 3-point arc while the Wildcats were 2-of-11.

Batesville dominated on the glass, out-rebounding the Wildcats 29-9. Batesville outscored Franklin County 20-14 from the paint.

The Bulldogs were led in scoring by Sam Johnson with 13 points. Also scoring in double figures were Brayden Maple 11 and Cade Kaiser 10. Carson Hartley added nine points followed by James Hughes seven, Jack Grunkemeyer three and Gus Prickel two.

Grunkemeyer pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Johnson had six rebounds. Kaiser and Maple both had five rebounds.

Trenten Luers dished out a team-high four assists. Grunkemeyer added four assists.

Franklin County was led in scoring by Eli Butt and Nick Vanoven, both with five points. Isaiah Kemp and Quinn Gillman both scored four points. Brady Foster, Carter Dozier, Blake Stephenson and Carson Allen all scored two points.

Rushville

MUNCIE — The Lions traveled to former conference foe Delta Tuesday. The Class 3A No. 8 Eagles picked up their 16th win of the season 50-27.

Delta is now 16-6. Rushville drops to 3-17.

Delta jumped out to a 12-5 lead after the first eight minutes. The Eagles extended the lead in the second quarter with a 16-2 run. At the half, Delta led 28-7.

A close third quarter saw the Eagles outscore Rushville 12-11 to make it 40-18 heading to the fourth quarter. Delta won the fourth quarter 10-9 for the 50-27 win.

Rushville was led by Malaki Knight with nine points. Adrian Apodaca added seven points. Nich Jarman finished with five points. Quentin Cain had four points and Keegan Bowles scored two points.

The Lions host Oldenburg Academy (9-10) Saturday.
