Ian Maatsen has completed his move to Aston Villa from Chelsea. The defender has officially moved to the Second City ahead of the new season having seen his future at Chelsea become uncertain over the past couple of years.

Maatsen featured for Mauricio Pochettino in pre-season a year ago but found himself loaned out to Borussia Dortmund, with his profile heightening considerably with the German club's run to the Champions League final, where they were beaten by Real Madrid. The 22 year-old, signed from PSV Eindhoven in 2019, spent time on loan at Charlton Athletic, Coventry City, Burnley and then Dortmund before moving to Villa.

His move will bolster Chelsea's cofferes substantially ahead of another big transfer window, the first for Enzo Maresca since his move from Leicester City to replace Mauricio Pochettino earlier this summer. A statement released by Villa read: "Aston Villa is delighted to announce the signing of Ian Maatsen from Chelsea.

"The 22-year-old was named in the UEFA Champions League Team of the Season after helping Borussia Dortmund reach the final of the competition in 2023/24. "Maatsen, who is currently with the Netherlands at this summer's European Championship in Germany, becomes Unai Emery's second summer signing.

"The highly-rated left-back enjoyed an impressive spell on loan with Dortmund over the second half of last season. "Maatsen registered 16 appearances in the Bundesliga and seven in the Champions League, finding the net in the club’s quarter-final triumph over Atletico Madrid.

"Welcome, Ian!" Chelsea, meanwhile, also released a statement: "Ian Maatsen has left Chelsea and completed a permanent transfer to Aston Villa.

"The Dutchman has made the switch to the Midlands and ends his six-year Chelsea stay, which culminated in a loan spell at Borussia Dortmund during the second half of last season. "The versatile left-sided player joined our Academy from PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 2018 and made his senior debut for the Blues a year later, coming off the bench during a 7-1 League Cup win over Grimsby Town in September 2019.

"Following successful Football League loans at Charlton Athletic, Coventry City and Burnley – the latter of whom he helped to the Championship title – Maatsen returned to Chelsea and was incorporated into the first-team squad ahead of the 2023/24 season. "The left-back made 15 appearances for the Blues before spending the second half of the season on loan at Dortmund, who he helped reach the Champions League final against Real Madrid last month.

"Maatsen will now continue his career at Villa Park having agreed a permanent switch to Unai Emery’s side. "We thank Ian for all his efforts at Stamford Bridge and wish him well for the future."
