A Breathtaking Performance from The Magpies

What a game! What a result! What a performance! It might have only been Preston North End in the EFL Cup but that was one of the most enjoyable matches I’ve ever been to in many a year. Newcastle United are flying!

From a stats point of view it was our second 6-0 victory this season, it was our sixth win in a row - an outstanding 13 wins in 15 games. Forgive me if I’m a little bit shocked but as a Newcastle fan this just doesn’t happen! Ever! For a lot of teams, a cup run is often a distraction from poor league form and sadly for us, we’ve been awful in all competitions for many a year. Thankfully we’re riding high in both competitions right now and we must keep this momentum going.

We have to be careful though as we face an angry and somewhat embarrassed Preston side away in the league this weekend and I have a feeling they will pose a greater threat at home than they did last night. Without taking anything away from our lot last night, Preston were woeful, they never offered anything, we completely and utterly destroyed them; it’s something I’ve experienced a number of times as a Newcastle United fan but always on the receiving end of the humiliating defeat, rarely as the victor.

I’ve mentioned last nights performance already but I can’t quite get over how well we played and forgive me if I’m waxing lyrical about this game but if I can’t be over the moon when we win 6-0, when can I be? The movement from defence, through midfield and attack was breathtaking. The wide play from Ritchie and Atsu was unplayable. Mitrovic put in a magnificent performance, he never stopped running and fully deserved his brace of goals. Diame put in the kind of performance that shows why Rafa has put his faith in to him. Every player on the pitch was a hero last night and it would be unfair to pick one person as the MOTM.

Have the likes of Mitro, Hanley, Mbemba, Atsu and Diame have done enough to keep their place in the league fixture on Sunday? I suspect form doesn’t really come in to it, Rafa just picks the best 11 on the day to win the game. I don’t care who plays, I just want to keep winning. The winning feeling is not something I’ve really experienced much as a Newcastle United fan. Forgive me for being greedy but I just want it to continue. How at the lads!
