Brendan Lemieux chomps on Brady Tkachuk's finger in scrum

Two of the NHL’s premier pests collided on Saturday and, for some reason, it resulted in one biting the other's finger.

Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk was on the receiving end of Los Angeles Kings grinder Brendan Lemieux’s teeth chomping down on one of his digits, after the two grappled back and forth on the ice and the biter hovered over Tkachuk on his back.

Tkachuk then proceeded to exclaim to anyone that would hear him that Lemieux bit him, showing his bloody hand to multiple officials on the ice.

The Kings forward got two roughing penalties and a 10-minute misconduct, while Brady just got the same two roughing penalties. Even the 14 minutes of penalties will not be enough, as Lemieux is going to be getting an in-person call (still over Zoom) with the NHL’s Department of Player Safety, which allows the possibility of a suspension over five games.

Just don’t bite another guy’s finger; it’s pretty simple. Tkachuk knows what that says about the player.

“This is the one time I’m going to answer this,” Tkachuk said after the game. “It was the most gutless thing somebody could ever do. This guy, you can ask anyone of his teammates, nobody ever wants to play with him, this is a bad guy and a bad teammate, he focuses on himself all the time.

“The guy’s just a joke. He shouldn’t be in the league. This guy’s gutless. No other team wants him, he’s going to keep begging to be in the NHL but no other team is going to want him, he’s an absolute joke. I can’t even wrap my head around it. People don’t even do this. He’s just a bad guy.”

The Sens captain wasn’t done. He needed to correctly compare Lemieux to a baby.

“It’s outrageous. Kids don’t even do that anymore. Babies do that. I don’t even know what he was thinking, he’s just a complete brick head. He’s got nothing up there. Bad guy, bad player, but what a joke he is.”

This isn’t a new thing between the two players. When Lemieux was on the Rangers two years ago, multiple officials were needed to pry them apart.

And, as the broadcast pointed out at that time, their fathers had their fair share of scraps as well. Brady’s father, Keith Tkachuk, was a long-time NHL power forward, and Claude Lemieux was potentially the dirtiest player in the history of the sport. Of course that gene carried, and Claude was even at the centre of a biting incident himself during the 1986 Stanley Cup Finals.

Like father, like son has never been more relevant.

If Brendan receives a multi-game suspension, we will miss out on some peak entertainment next week. Brady’s brother, Matthew, and his Calgary Flames are set to visit the Kings on Dec. 2, and the fellow physical winger would certainly have something to say. Even to drive home the sudden halt of a storyline, the Kings and Senators are not playing each other for the rest of the season.

We will just need to be patient for a revenge game.
