Brian McDermott to leave Hibs after just one year as director of football after Malky Mackay appointment

Brian McDermott will leave Hibs after just a year as director of football.

The former Reading boss was installed to the position at Easter Road last summer to oversee the footballing operation. The Hibees carried out a full review of their football department in recent months and it emerged the 63-year-old could move into a more recruitment focus.

However, after the appointment of Malky Mackay as sporting director, it has now been confirmed he will move on completely when his contract expires next month. McDermott oversaw a number of signings last summer and it is anticipated Hibs will have another squad rebuild, which he will now no longer be around for.

A club statement reads: "Hibernian FC can confirm that Brian McDermott will depart the Club at the end of June following the expiration of his contract. McDermott joined Hibs in May 2023 and oversaw the Club’s football operation, holding a specific focus on recruitment. Following extended discussions with the Club, McDermott will vacate his role at the end of the month.

Malky Mackay added: “Brian is someone I’ve known for a long time and is a really good man. Brian and I had a good discussion and came to this conclusion. I’d like to thank him for the good work he’s done over the last 12 months and wish him all the best in his future endeavours.”
