Brighton 1-1 Chelsea FC LIVE! Webster goal - Premier League result, match stream and latest updates today

Brighton vs Chelsea - LIVE!

Chelsea’s winless run in the Premier League stretched to four matches on Tuesday, as a 1-1 draw away to Brighton and Hove Albion saw their slender titles hopes suffer yet more damage.

Hakim Ziyech’s opportunist strike gave Thomas Tuchel’s side the lead against the run of play in the 28th minute.

But Brighton were rewarded for their endeavour when Adam Webster thundered a header past Kepa Arrizabalaga on the hour after some intense home pressure.

Chelsea began to dominate late on but could not force a winner. They have gained three points from the last 12 available.

They remain in third place with 44 points, 12 behind leaders Manchester City having played a game more. Liverpool are second with 45 points having played two games fewer than Chelsea.

“Not many teams have dominated Brighton over 90 minutes,” Tuchel adds.

“It’s normal that they play brave, bring people to your box and create chances. Of course, if you can take a half chance you can win. But in the moment it’s difficult to be too harsh on our players.”

On Ziyech’s lack of celebration, Tuchel shrugs: “He can score 20 more and not celebrate.”

22:17 , Marc Mayo

Thomas Tuchel speaking to BT Sport: “We tried everything but you could so we were mentally [and physically] tired.

“We have two days off now and then two days to prepare for the Tottenham match, and then the boys need some days off. There’s no other solution.”

Full time! Brighton 1-1 Chelsea

21:51 , Marc Mayo

That’s it, more dropped points for Chelsea... Another strong display and result for Potter’s Seagulls.

21:51 , Marc Mayo

90+4 mins: Awful corner from Alonso. Cucurella clears.

21:50 , Marc Mayo

90+4 mins: Chelsea have a corner...

Their last hope?

21:50 , Marc Mayo

90+3 mins: Werner counters after Chelsea deal with the ball in but is snuffed out by two Brighton chasers, and the Seagulls’ own run up the pitch is dealt with.

Two teams cancelling each other out right now.

21:49 , Marc Mayo

90+2 mins: March smartly wins a foul off Alonso by the corner flag, no sense of a second booking despite the home fans’ calls though.

21:48 , Marc Mayo

90 mins: Four minutes added on...

21:46 , Marc Mayo

89 mins: Kovacic winds up after a corner is cleared into the D, and sends the ball pirouetting into the South Coast sky.

The last few minutes here and how costly will this be to Chelsea?

It is no longer about the title. That’s gone.

But it will not be long before they are seriously looking over their shoulder at the chasing pack in the race for the top four.

How has it come to this after such an impressive start to the season? Tuchel described their position going into the match as unacceptable. Well what will he have to say if they fail to win yet again?

21:44 , Marc Mayo

87 mins: Cucurella goes on another run and yet overhits his simple pass into Trossard, sucking the life out of that attack.

Trossard gets another go moments later but falls over the ball.

21:43 , Marc Mayo

86 mins: Azpilicueta pops up in the box and tries to stab the ball home, before being crowded out.

Next it’s Werner’s go and his effort bounces around off various defenders. Much more pressure from the visitors, in the final five minutes...

21:42 , Marc Mayo

84 mins: Penalty appeals from the away end after Mount hits the deck. Nothing doing.

21:39 , Marc Mayo

82 mins: After all that, the set-piece comes to nothing but Chelsea have maintained possession and are pinning Brighton back a bit more now.

21:38 , Marc Mayo

81 mins: Rudiger is booked for dissent amid a delay to the free-kick.

21:37 , Marc Mayo

80 mins: Overambitious from Burn, who races out of defence to wipe out Ziyech and earn a booking.

Before the free-kick, Lukaku exits from Burn’s pocket to be replaced by Havertz.

Jorginho is off for Kovacic and Werner replaces Ziyech in a triple sub.

21:35 , Marc Mayo

78 mins: Glimmers of hope for Chelsea as we approach the final ten minutes, Hudson-Odoi sending in a nice ball for Lukaku to attack but Burn wins that battle - as he has all night.

21:33 , Marc Mayo

76 mins: Speaking of changes, there is Brighton’s last with Lamptey off for March as Potter manages his youngster’s game time since a return from injury.

James Robson at Amex Stadium

21:33 , Marc Mayo

It is remarkable that Tuchel has not made a change yet. Werner is warming up and Kovacic and Havertz about to come on.

But why did that not happen sooner, with Brighton clearly in control?

21:32 , Marc Mayo

75 mins: And there goes the Chelsea pressure...

Ziyech’s corner is overhit and flies into touch at the far-post.

21:30 , Marc Mayo

72 mins: Chance!

Something from Chelsea as Rudiger dinks a pass for Lukaku to latch onto, the striker swivels and shoots which Sanchez has to turn wide. A timely reminder for the hosts?

21:28 , Marc Mayo

70 mins: What a run from Webster!

The defender picks the ball up by the centre-circle and goes on an adventure all the way to the byline - before putting in a low cross that Kepa can scoop up.

“Champions of Europe, you’re having a laugh,” is the latest chant from the home end...

James Robson at Amex Stadium

21:25 , Marc Mayo

An equaliser was the least Brighton deserved. They have been the better side and have consistently stretched Chelsea.

How long does Tuchel leave it like this?

Chelsea do not look like opening Brighton up and are increasingly outnumbered at the back.

At the moment they are sleepwalking towards more dropped points.

21:25 , Marc Mayo

67 mins: Chance!

Should that have been 2-1?!

Trossard stands a ball up that reaches Lamptey for a return ball in, and it simply bounces off Maupay’s foot as the Frenchman failed to react in time - while in space just six yards out.

21:23 , Marc Mayo

66 mins: Alonso tries to do as Ziyech did and fires in an impatient whack from distance, which isn’t too uncontrolled but clears the crossbar pretty comfortably.

21:23 , Marc Mayo

65 mins: The home fans are having the better time of it, even Chelsea’s rebuttal of “champions of Europe” is only met with ironic cheers from their Amex counterparts.

21:21 , Marc Mayo

63 mins: Immediate reply from Hudson-Odoi, who does well to create space cutting in from the left and MacAllister throws himself in front of the shot.

No such need for Kante’s rebound, mind. That flies over.

21:19 , Marc Mayo

61 mins: After Kepa was forced into action to parry a deflected effort wide, the corner is swung in towards the unmarked Webster and his header is too hot for the Spaniard to handle!

Immediately before the restart, Brighton throw on Trossard and Maupay for Welbeck and Gross.

GOAL! Brighton 1-1 Chelsea | Webster 60'

21:17 , Marc Mayo

60 mins: Webster smashes his header past Kepa!

21:16 , Marc Mayo

58 mins: The first yellow card of the night and, surprise surprise, Lamptey wins the foul after his pace outdoes Alonso and he earns a trip to the turf for his troubles.

21:15 , Marc Mayo

57 mins: The Brighton pressure isn’t subsiding anytime soon with Lukaku the latest called upon to head clear a corner from the right.

Silva then has to marshal a cute flick towards Welbeck, which Kepa leaps on. A bit nervy for Chelsea but nothing too worrisome.

21:12 , Marc Mayo

55 mins: Cucurella again bounds into space on the inside-left channel, and Moder is played in before a cross that is easily cleared.

James Robson at Amex Stadium

21:11 , Marc Mayo

Just as in the first half, Brighton look threatening going forward, but cannot apply the finish.

Thiago Silva has impressed for Chelsea - being in the right place at the right time on a number of occasions.

21:10 , Marc Mayo

52 mins: Once again, the ball goes in for Brighton - this time from a corner - and nothing comes of it.

Webster goes in and it bounces off his chest, falling easily for Kepa. It’s not been the Seagulls day in attack, even if their midfield and much of their defence have been top notch.

21:07 , Marc Mayo

50 mins: Welbeck needs support. A fine ball sets the striker free but Silva is all over him and no Brighton player is anywhere near.

How long before we see Maupay off the bench?

21:05 , Marc Mayo

48 mins: It comes out to Ziyech, who strikes again from distance but this effort bounces off the crowd.

21:04 , Marc Mayo

47 mins: Chelsea reply with some pressure of their own and win a corner in front of the travelling fans.

Second-half begins!

21:02 , Marc Mayo

And instantly Brighton are on the front foot, Welbeck slashing an effort wide at the near-post.

21:02 , Marc Mayo

The teams are back out!

21:00 , Marc Mayo

Here’s that little chat between Ziyech and Lukaku after the whistle - the Belgian has certainly lacked an impact on the game.

The difference at the break

20:56 , Marc Mayo

Should Sanchez have done better, or does Ziyech deserve the credit?

James Robson at Amex Stadium

20:50 , Marc Mayo

Chelsea can consider themselves a touch fortunate to be ahead at the break - but they capitalised on one of their rare openings, while Brighton consistently wasted theirs.

This isn’t over yet, but Tuchel will be relieved to go in ahead at half time.

20:48 , Marc Mayo

A fairly strong discussion between Lukaku and Ziyech, perhaps on that pass a few moments ago, as they walk down the tunnel.

Both covered their mouths though, so the lip-readers among us have been foiled...

Half-time! Brighton 0-1 Chelsea

20:47 , Marc Mayo

The corner comes to nothing and that’s the half!

20:46 , Marc Mayo

45+1 mins: Lamptey shows off his stunning speed to race down the right and put a ball in.

Guess who? Silva is there to clear.

20:45 , Marc Mayo

45 mins: Hudson-Odoi blazes over after Chelsea catch Brighton by surprise with a long ball over the top. Must do better...

One minute added on - Ziyech’s strike the difference at the minute.

 (PA)
(PA)

20:43 , Marc Mayo

43 mins: Not much seen of Lukaku yet and the Belgian has some terse words for Ziyech after the Moroccan’s pass is a bit overhit for his liking. Ziyech stands his ground, though.

20:42 , Marc Mayo

41 mins: Speaking of defenders who are good on the ball, Webster hasn’t put a foot wrong for Brighton tonight.

Welbeck leads the latest Seagulls’ push forward before Ziyech puts the ball out for a throw, earning a word from referee Kevin Friend before the restart for kicking the ball away.

20:40 , Marc Mayo

38 mins: Whenever Silva is involved in Chelsea’s play, in defence or on the ball, good things tend to happen.

Welbeck is next to try his hand and takes aim from 20 yards out, sending his shot high and a touch wide.

20:38 , Marc Mayo

37 mins: Webster comes up the pitch to steal possession and Brighton again settle on the ball about 45 yards from goal but that final ball is lacking.

Gross attempts a lob into the box and Kepa punches before another cross evades the leaping Lamptey.

James Robson at Amex Stadium

20:34 , Marc Mayo

You have to say that goal was against the run of play, but Chelsea have been rewarded for getting a shot on target, which Brighton have not managed to do despite fashioning some decent openings.

Perhaps Sanchez could have done better, but credit also has to go to Ziyech, who drilled his effort low into the corner from the edge of the box.

That should settle Chelsea, who have looked a little ragged.

20:34 , Marc Mayo

33 mins: Brighton have responded well to the goal - in all honesty the game is playing exactly as it did before the opener.

Lamptey spins and crosses right into the danger area but Silva is all alone to head away.

20:32 , Marc Mayo

31 mins: That goal was not so much against the run of play as fully out of the blue.

Brighton were the better side without testing Kepa and yet Chelsea have taken the lead.

They want another as Alonso puts in a dangerous low cross, which falls to Jorginho and is belted over.

20:30 , Marc Mayo

29 mins: How about that! Ziyech took aim with a speculative effort and it beat two defenders, perhaps taking a slight touch, and Sanchez’s parry is not enough.

20:28 , Marc Mayo

26 mins: Oh, Danny...

A ball over the top is bouncing high and Welbeck throws an awkward left foot at it, just as it reaches its summit at about neck height.

Needless to say, he gets nothing on it and the ball goes out for a goal kick.

20:25 , Marc Mayo

24 mins: Alonso sloppy in playing out from the back and Brighton threaten once again, yet they are happy to be patient and work an opening to Welbeck delicately.

He’s not the sort of striker to lump it up to, mind.

James Robson at Amex Stadium

20:22 , Marc Mayo

Brighton are sharper in all departments so far. They are quicker to most 50-50s and forcing Chelsea into mistakes.

The better side so far.

20:22 , Marc Mayo

21 mins: Pinball in the Chelsea area! Welbeck and MacAllister fling their feet at the ball in hope of a shot, but the Blues’ defence holds firm.

The home fans are getting into this...

20:21 , Marc Mayo

20 mins: Vital tackle from Lamptey to deny Hudson-Odoi the space to shoot and the former Chelsea man brings the ball out of defence with his great pace, and Brighton settle into possession midway up the visitors’ half.

20:18 , Marc Mayo

18 mins: There’s been a touch of the samba style about Brighton so far, a few nice little flicks and turns to open up some space.

20:18 , Marc Mayo

17 mins: A spell of Chelsea possession to help finally ease them into the game.

 (AP)
(AP)

20:16 , Marc Mayo

15 mins: A first shot from Chelsea as Azpilicueta looks to bend one in from range - it’s on target and Sanchez is forced to palm it over.

The corner is cleared by Veltman.

James Robson at Amex Stadium

20:15 , Marc Mayo

Tuhcel keeps turning back to his bench and gesticulating about precisely what has gone wrong.

Chelsea are short of ideas and have looked a touch vulnerable at the back in the opening 10 minutes. With some better finishing from Brighton, they could be in trouble.

20:15 , Marc Mayo

14 mins: Cucurella is having a load of fun racing in from the left flank and once again the Spaniard nearly finds Welbeck, but for a last-ditch Silva touch on his disguised pass.

20:13 , Marc Mayo

12 mins: Brighton’s transitions from defence to midfield are really smooth, it’s just the final ball lacking with Welbeck off the edge of a couple of passes into the box.

Chelsea’s midfield yet to stamp their authority on the game.

James Robson at Amex Stadium

20:10 , Marc Mayo

Not long gone and Tuchel is already showing his frustration on the touchline.

20:09 , Marc Mayo

9 mins: Lamptey is on a man-for-man job with Marcos Alonso as Brighton look to limit Chelsea’s width - and thus their balls into the box for Lukaku.

A very even start to proceedings, leading to an already-exasperated look from Tuchel on the touchline.

James Robson at Amex Stadium

20:06 , Marc Mayo

Chelsea have lined up with a back four to start, which was not clear from the team sheet, but Hudson-Odoi is playing as a left winger with Mount in a more withdrawn midfield role.

20:06 , Marc Mayo

6 mins: A first foray for Chelsea leads to a cross from the right being cleared, with Lamptey set away on a hasty counter that dribbles into touch.

20:04 , Marc Mayo

4 mins: Silva shrugs off any need for treatment after appearing to feel something after that attack.

No let up for the Brazilian though with the ball still down his end. A good start from the hosts.

20:03 , Marc Mayo

2 mins: Close!

A lovely move from the Seagulls through Alzate and Welbeck’s flick reaches Moder, who drives at goal from 18 yards out and his shot dribbles wide of the far-post.

The Pole should arguably be hitting the target there.

20:02 , Marc Mayo

1 min: Welbeck up top alone for Brighton with MacAllister and Moder pressing just behind him, and the wing-backs also fairly high up out of possession too.

Here come the teams!

Kovacic rested tonight

19:55 , Marc Mayo

Thomas Tuchel has revealed why Mateo Kovacic is on the bench tonight, after starting at Manchester City.

He said: “We have to be a little bit cautious. We don’t want to overuse him.

“He’s played a lot after injury and maybe we rushed him back a little bit for all these matches. Of course he’s very strong and was happy to play but we have to be careful.”

Werner reveals surprise at fan love

19:50 , Marc Mayo

Timo Werner has thanked Chelsea fans for their support throughout his somewhat difficult time at the club.

“Sometimes, I even don’t know why they are supporting me so much because, as a striker, you want to score as many goals as possible and sometimes I miss this aim,” the German admitted to Premier League Productions.

“I have to be honest about that, but I think it is a lot of fun to play in front of the Chelsea fans and, when they give you the support like they give it to me, it makes you even stronger when you miss chances or when you have hard times.

“On the other side, I think I try to give my best every game. I give, every time, 100 per cent and [hope] that, at the end, the fans are happy and also that the team are happy.”

Potter happy with the Seagulls

19:32 , Marc Mayo

Graham Potter responded to speculation about his future ahead of the game, amid links with the Everton vacancy.

He said: “I think the mistake is often to think you are better than what you are and think you can succeed in any environment, and it is not the case.

“If you are successful as a coach, you need good people around you and your staff, and at the club the Board, chairman and CEO are so helpful and supportive. We are fortunate to have a fantastic chairman, who provides the clarity and vision for us and allows us to get on with our work. There has never been any pressure or feeling other than support, help and encouragement.

“Then there is the club’s strategy, the structures around it and the players, who are so helpful and supportive. What we have here is an opportunity to be successful, to do your job and keep improving. But I am no magician, I need the help of the people around me.”

Tuchel unhappy with Tuesday fixture

19:22 , Marc Mayo

Thomas Tuchel has questioned the Premier League’s wisdom in playing tonight’s game on Tuesday rather than Wednesday.

“It’s very hard to understand,” said the Chelsea boss. “Petr Cech gave the club’s opinion on that and I strongly agree with Petr.

“It has nothing to do with City or three away games in a row. Both us and Brighton have our next game on Sunday so there was no need to put it on a Tuesday.

“We have the schedule that we have. We played in some competitions, some will hopefully stay with us and there are some extra games to come. We have this Brighton game now because we are in Abu Dhabi playing the Club World Cup so it’s squeezed into this week and last week we did not have a whole week to prepare for Manchester City because we had a Carabao Cup semi-final.

“If you look at it isolated, you can play on Saturday and Tuesday. We have done that before but if you widen the focus a little bit, we could have done better in scheduling this match for sure.”

19:15 , Marc Mayo

A bit of a question mark over Brighton’s backline after three changes see Tariq Lamptey, Steven Alzate and Danny Welbeck start.

It looks like a match-up with Chelsea’s system with former Blue Lamptey at wing-back and Joel Veltman tucking into defence.

Who partners Welbeck up front remains to be seen and the striker could be the lone frontman, aided by Alexis MacAllister from the midfield.

Surprisingly, Neal Maupay and Leandro Trossard drop to the bench.

So three changes for Chelsea as Mason Mount, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Jorginho come in for Christian Pulisic, Malang Sarr and Mateo Kovacic.

That means a start at wing-back for Hudson-Odoi with Azpilicueta dropped into the centre of defence.

Evening Standard score prediction

18:43 , Marc Mayo

Brighton battled to an impressive draw at Stamford Bridge on December 29, with Danny Welbeck netting a last-gasp equaliser to cancel out Romelu Lukaku’s first-half goal.

City hammering aside, the Seagulls seem to generally fare well and raise their game against the bigger teams, though Chelsea boast the top-flight’s second-best away record.

While it wouldn’t be a shock to see them drop more points as they continue to struggle to utilise club-record signing Lukaku’s best talents, we’re backing the Blues to take out their frustrations from the City game here with a morale-boosting victory.

It is worth noting that Brighton have not beaten Chelsea since all the way back in 1933…
