In over 15 years in WWE Chris Jericho has won six World titles and established himself as an all-time fan favourite – even being named professional wrestling’s “greatest champion in history”.

As well as appearing in the US-version of Strictly Come Dancing, he also fronts rock band Fozzy, who are on tour in the UK now.

1. Going from wrestler to rock star is quite a career change – how did it come about?

My whole life I wanted to be in a rock band and I wanted to be a wrestler. I’ve been playing in bands since I was 12 and I’ve never stopped. I started wrestling when I was 19 and never stopped. They were always the two goals I had.

2. You’re touring the UK right now – is that when being in a band is the most similar to your other job? Moving from town to town in a van with a bunch of other guys…

Life on the road is similar no matter what you do. I’ve been on the road since I was 19, which is half my life, and it’s how I make my living.

3. Do you think you get your own way in the band because the other guys are worried they’ll end up in the Walls of Jericho or the Codebreaker if they disagree with you?

No! And Anthony Hopkins doesn’t go around eating people’s livers when he isn’t playing Hannibal Lecter!

4. Which crowds are your favourites: rock crowds or wrestling crowds?

Being in front of a live audience is pretty similar whether you’re wrestling or whether you’re playing in a band. It’s same if you’re a Shakespearean actor – the energy of the crowd really spurs you on.

5. Do you have a favourite place to play in the UK?

Most of the Fozzy shows in the UK are great, UK crowds are the best! I love London, Nottingham is great, Glasgow is great. Glasgow is probably up there as one of the best cities in Europe.

6. Do you ever encounter any snobbery from people who don’t think Fozzy are a “real band” because of your other job?

That’s exactly what it is – snobbery. Taylor Momsen gets it in the Pretty Reckless, Jared Leto gets it in 30 Seconds to Mars and Bruce Dickinson probably gets it when he’s flying planes! How can he possibly be a pilot – he’s in a rock and roll band!

It doesn’t matter to me. Come and see us play, we’ll give anyone a run for their money. If we weren’t any good we wouldn’t still be around after five, ten years, gaining traction and getting bigger and bigger. We kick ass!

7. One of my favourite things about wrestling is the idea of kayfabe, where you never break character regardless of the circumstance – has there been time when you’ve really hurt yourself but just had to keep going like nothing was wrong?

I broke my arm once, but the show must go on. We just restructured the match and I went and had surgery afterwards. That’s our attitude – the show must go on.

I’ve been pretty lucky over the years. There have been times when I’ve had a bad bump but you’ve got to get over it. You take a few seconds to catch your breath and then you try to make it to the end if the match.

8. You’ve been on the American version of Strictly Come Dancing – was that scarier than going in the ring, or with the outlandish costumes and spray tans was it pretty much second nature to you?

Wrestling is all about showmanship and choreography, so they have that in common – and with Fozzy I’ve always got to keep time with the music, so that helped.

The training was a lot like wrestling, eight hours a day, non-stop, every day. Then there’s the fire you feel when you’re in a competition. It was really hard, but I made it to week 6.

9. What’s it like having an action figure made of you? Do your kids play with it, and does Daddy always win?

The thing with being in WWE for the best part of 15 years is that there are so many of them – there’s something like 150-200 of me now. Every time I change my outfit, or my hair or my beard they have to make a new action figure of me. A guy like Steve Austin with a shaved heads who only wears black doesn’t get that!

It’s always cool seeing what they come up with. Some of them look like me, some of them look like Skeletor! I don’t really play with myself though.

Fozzy’s latest album “Do You Wanna Start A War?” is out now. They are on tour in the UK now until December. Details are at www.fozzyrock.com.
