Brothers set to battle again in St Michael’s Hospice match

A CHARITY cricket match which over the years has raised more than £13,000 for St Michael’s Hospice returns this weekend.

The 10th Richard Matravers Memorial Charity Cricket Match takes place at Bartestree & Lugwardine Cricket Club, near Hereford, this Sunday (July 7).

The annual event first started in 2012 in memory of Richard Matravers, who died at St Michael’s in 2001. His sons, Adam and Robert, had always talked about raising funds for the charity so they brought together their friends to form two sides - with a brother captaining each team.

Their fundraising took on even greater significance in 2017 when Adam and Rob’s mum, Miriam, also died at the hospice.

“Not only is it extremely important for to us to raise money for the hospice that provided such great care to both our parents in their final days, but playing the match at Bartestree is just perfect as it’s the home of the hospice nearby,” they said.

“We hope as many of our friends and family will come along and get involved in helping raise our best total yet. Thank you for your continued support.”

The match, which starts at 1pm, will feature 20 overs per side. Each team will feature a mix of regular and non-regular players to make the match both interesting and unpredictable.

Last year, Adam’s team by 50 runs to go 5-4 up in the series.

After the match, the winning captain will receive the Richard Matravers Memorial Shield, with the player of the match picking up the Miriam Matravers Award.

There will also be a raffle and auction, with all funds going towards St Michael’s Hospice.
