Bruno Fernandes insists Manchester United have been “brilliant” this season, despite mounting pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

United go into tonight’s Champions League tie with Villarreal having lost three of their last four games — including the shock defeat by Young Boys in their opening match.

After being backed to bring in big money signings Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane, Solskjaer is expected to deliver major silverware this season. But he has already seen his side knocked out of the Carabao Cup by West Ham last week.

Defeat against the team that beat them in the Europa League Final last term would only increase doubts over whether the Norwegian can return United to the top.

But Fernandes is adamant Solskjaer is leading them in the right direction. “The team has been brilliant since the beginning of the season,” he said. “Last season was a big improvement from us. Still we missed the chance to get trophies.

“The team has been brilliant, everyone is on the same page and that is important.”

Despite Fernandes’s vote of confidence, former United players are lining up to declare now is the time for Solskjaer to deliver, with Gary Neville the latest to echo those sentiments.

“The pressure is a privilege,” said the United manager. “To work in this environment, you have to embrace that pressure.

“If Gary says we need to win a trophy this season or next because of the backing, I have to say, yes, I have been backed.

“The backing I’ve got seems to me we’re sticking to that plan. But we’re in a results business, and Gary knows that. He knows the DNA here and what we’re trying to do.

“I know we have an obligation to win at this club in a certain style. Sometimes that’s risky but we’ll get there. Hopefully we’ll get there around April or May, challenging for the trophies we’d like to see back at Old Trafford.”
