Bukayo Saka exposes Liverpool problem that could be resolved in transfer market

Bukayo Saka has made a habit of destroying defences in recent years. But the Arsenal winger may have inadvertently sent one Liverpool career tumbling towards a disappointing conclusion.

During the clash between the Reds and the Gunners shortly before Christmas, in tussling for possession Saka accidentally sent Kostas Tsimikas tumbling and crashing into Jurgen Klopp.

The result saw Tsimikas whisked off to hospital where it was confirmed he had suffered a broken collarbone. And the Greece international was subsequently barely seen in the Premier League.

It encapsulated what was a tough campaign for Tsimikas, who found himself firmly behind Andy Robertson in the left-back pecking order at the beginning of the season and by the end had Joe Gomez ahead of him in the position also.

While starting two Europa League games and the League Cup win over Leicester City, Tsimikas had made just one four-minute outing in the Premier League in the first eight games before Robertson's shoulder injury during international duty opened the door for regular first-team outings.

Tsimikas is a player who needs rhythm and it took a while for the Greek to get up to speed, culminating in a poor outing in the Europa League loss at Toulouse. That, though, was a turning point, and a few days later he contributed two assists in the win over Brentford. He was impressive in the draw at Manchester City and had maintained a good level of performance before falling victim to the clumsy Saka.

While out for only six weeks, that was sufficient time for the landscape to have changed on his return. Gomez had impressed in the left-back role and Robertson was also back to full fitness, contributing to Tsimikas making just three substitute appearances totalling 13 minutes during the last 15 Premier League games.

There were a couple of starts in the cups, but while not the only player to have a shocker in the Europa League quarter-final home defeat to Atalanta, that Tsimikas was substituted at half-time underlined his lack of sharpness and momentum.

The clear highlight of the season for Tsimikas was coming off the bench in the League Cup final against Chelsea and capping an impressive cameo by delivering the corner from which Virgil van Dijk headed the dramatic late winner. That, though, was a rare positive during a difficult second half of the campaign.

This summer, then, could be an interesting one for Tsimikas. Although he signed a new long-term deal only in September, uncertainty over where he stands in the left-back order will only be determined once new head coach Arne Slot assesses his squad. And while a hugely popular member of the squad, at 28 Tsimikas may decide he requires regular first-team football at this stage of his career.

The next few months will be pivotal in shaping the Anfield career of Liverpool's Greek Scouser.
