Burnley Fan View: Aaron Lennon would be an intelligent signing for Burnley

Burnley are closing in on the signing of Aaron Lennon from Everton, after Theo Walcott joined the Toffees earlier this week.

I think this is a really good signing for the club, but more importantly an intelligent one. Lennon hasn’t yet signed but should complete a medical today and join on a permanent basis. His contract is up in summer and this ensures he can get up to speed and contribute this season, all for a modest sum believed to be £1.5m.

The key factor is Lennon’s contract. Knowing Dyche and the board we will make sure it will be very friendly to the club. I expect it to be a 2.5 year deal on potentially joint highest wages. This will make sure if we are to go down next season we will have him for just one more year, when our PL money will shrink dramatically.

Lennon brings a handful of things we are missing at the moment at low risk to us. He has over 350 Premier League appearances, at a high level. He has represented England on 21 occasions and been selected for two World Cups.

His biggest asset is his pace, something we have been severely lacking for a long time. Along with Nkoudou we will finally have a bit of counter attacking threat, which will come in handy in those tight game where we are drawing with 10 minutes left.

My only worry is his pace will go in time and Lennon himself will probably admit his finished product is far from good enough on occasion. He needs to learn to adapt his game over time to prolong his career that’s for sure. His delivery can be improved too, but this is something I know Dyche will drill into him at the training ground.

One final drawback is his defending, Dyche rarely selects players who can’t defend or dig in and Lennon doesn’t possess these qualities in abundance. It’s critical he learns how to maintain our defensive shape – he can be an impact sub in the meantime however.

It shows our growth as a club that we are bringing in the likes of Lennon, albeit at the tail end of hi career, when not so long ago we were signing Dane Richards and Leon Cort. It’s a great time to be a Claret.
