Burnley fan view: Irish Clarets heartbroken but intact

Burnley’s considerable Irish contingent fell at the final hurdle after a 5-1 thrashing at home to Denmark, but fortunately all of the international clarets returned injury free.

Despite taking an early lead, thanks to a Robbie Brady free kick converted by Shane Duffy, Ireland fell apart quickly and completely. It was especially disappointing for Stephen Ward who was twice responsible for Danish goals.

It would have been great to see more Burnley players at the World Cup, but from a selfish and short term point of view I am just pleased all our international players returned healthy.

Steven Defour impressed as a substitute against Japan, whilst Jack Cork only watched as England held Brazil to a goalless draw at Wembley.

Wales might have failed to reach the playoffs for the World Cup but Sam Vokes lined up against Panama. He missed a penalty and Panama equalised in the final minute after he was substituted – not a great night for Sam.

Iceland travelled to Qatar and were pegged back in the last minute to draw 1-1. No doubt the temperature played a part, it will be very interesting to see how much of a factor that plays in the World Cup there in 2022. Gudmundsson was left out of the squad for both this game and the home match against Czech Republic which they lost 2-1.

Chris Wood is yet to play against Peru, with that game kicking off at 2.15am on Thursday UK time. The match is played in Lima, with Peru heavy favourites, although a Draw will send Wood and his countrymen through.

Burnley had a great period before this international break and will look to continue that in the next match against Swansea at home on Saturday. Burnley will be heavy favourites but can we cope with the weight of expectation?
