Burnley Fan View: Jose Mourinho's comments a disgrace

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho should hang his head in shame after his ridiculous comments to the media, following Burnley’s 2-2 draw at Old Trafford on Boxing Day.

Burnley went into the game with a 100% record against United on Boxing day, winning each of the previous three ties. After a miraculous start to the season that has held up, it wouldn’t be too crazy to expect that to continue. The odds were stacked heavily in favour of the Manchester club, who fielded Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Romelu Lukaku against the clarets. Let’s face it, United won’t win the league, but they had to give it a go.

By half-time Burnley were 2-0 up thanks to Ashley Barnes and Steven Defour. Barnes poked home from close range within five minutes, and Defour converted a wonderful free-kick from 30 yards out. The outstretched David De Gea, regarded as the best goalkeeper in football, couldn’t get a touch on the ball as it was swept perfectly into the top corner. Defour’s free kick won’t win goal of the season, but it will be memorable for him. He might have been playing for Manchester United had he not suffered a terrible injury in 2007, as the club were courting his signature.

In the second half, however, we had to defend for our lives and Manchester United pegged us back early on through substitute Jesse Lingard. With a handful of minutes left, Lingard scored a second and the game ended 2-2.

I was still pleased with the point, given our opponents, but Jose Mourinho was typically classless in his post-match interview.

“We must spend more” cooed Mourinho, despite the fact he has assembled one of the most expensive squads in world football and has nothing but a Europa League to show for it. The fact his side couldn’t overcome a Burnley team that cost peanuts in comparison, wasn’t really addressed.

Mourinho has history of antagonism with Burnley; in his second spell as Chelsea manager he orchestrated a media witch hunt against Ashley Barnes, after Matic was sent off for reacting to what was described as a tackle (but was clearly a pass) in 2015.

Jose has this clever way of deflecting blame and media focus from his own failings as a manager, and his players’ inability to live up to their astronomic transfer fees and wages. If spending more money is the issue, Jose, where does it end? How much money do you have to spend to beat Burnley at home?

He also felt the need to criticise Burnley for having so few shots and such low possession. He really is a moron. What did he expect us to do? Come to Old Trafford and try to carve them open and get beat 5-0? It’s ironic that he played shocking negative football whilst Managing Inter in 2010 to win the Champions League, but let’s not let facts get in the way of a sore loser’s whinge.

He came into the Premier League with Chelsea with a swagger that he backed up on the pitch, even with the millions of pounds he was able to throw at it. Now he is a miserable, stale man, who has no character and is becoming a broken record. I wouldn’t swap a packet of quavers for him.
