Burnley Fan View: Robbie Brady injury could force our hand in January window

Robbie Brady was stretchered off the field on Saturday, and it looks to be a season ending injury at this early stage. This could mean we are more aggressive in the January transfer window.

Of course we hope Brady’s injury isn’t so bad and it hasn’t been confirmed yet. He was just coming into his own too after a great performance at Bournemouth in midweek, capped with his first goal of the season.

Nevertheless it is time to assess our needs going into the window – I was going to suggest we are pretty good across all areas of the pitch but this will definitely change things in my opinion. I am Scott Arfield’s biggest fan, but he doesn’t offer the same attacking threat as Brady, who can widen our play and give opposing full backs a headache. We need a pacy, inventive left winger to bolster our ranks.

Potentiallm Gudmundsson could switch to the left wing, being left footed, but then it only shifts the problem over. Another option might be to bring in Charlie Taylor and push him up to left midfield. However I feel given our finances we should look to invest some more money in the playing squad. I wonder what Kamil Grosicki is doing these days?

Out biggest priority however should definitely be to tie up existing players on long term contracts. Especially the likes of James Tarkowski who will undoubtedly be turning heads around the Premier League next month. If we can reward these players for their efforts so far it will reinvigorate them and show them we believe we are good enough to remain where we are without importing in more players.

Aside from this, I think we need to invest in some youth and depth, particularly up front and at centre back. Whilst our depth is plenty good enough, I think we need to be looking ahead for who will be starting games in 2018 and beyond.

We are in a great position at the moment, and assuming we get the required results between now and the New Year we can truly start planning for another year in the Premier League with 5 months to spare – what a luxury that would be!
