Byng records shutout win over Davis

Apr. 11—BYNG — Junior pitcher Hagen Graham tossed six strong innings and the Byng Pirates blanked Davis 5-0 in a Tuesday night home game.

The Pirates improved to 11-7 on the year, while Davis — ranked No. 18 in Class 2A — left town at an even 8-8.

Byng is back in action Friday, hosting Elk City and Sulphur in a three-way at Stokes Field. Those games are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

Graham struck out eight, walked three and allowed just two hits in six shutout innings. Kix Stephens tossed a scoreless seventh inning in relief.

Byng scored single runs in the first, second, third, fifth and sixth innings.

The Pirates collected just four total hits but were able to take advantage of three Davis errors and nine walks.

Bo Boatwright finished 1-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs and Kendon Wood went 1-for-1 with a walk, a double and a run scored. He was also hit by a pitch.

Cooper McCage finished 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI and Preston Welch ended up 1-fo-r2 with two walks and a run scored from his leadoff spot.

Trey Melton had two of four Davis base hits in the game. Dax Owens and Landon Gibson also had singles for the Wolves.

Latta falls to 2A No. 17 StroudSTROUD — After winning nine of 10 games in a hot stretch, the Latta High School baseball team has now suffered back-to-back losses.

Coach Dillon Atkinson's club dropped a tough 8-6 decision to Stroud in a Tuesday night road game.

Latta — No. 6 in Class 2A — slipped to 12-5 on the year, while the 17th-ranked Tigers improved to 13-7.

The Panthers will try to get back on track today in the first round of the 2024 Coleman Baseball Tournament. Latta is set to tangle with Mill Creek — ranked No. 17 in Class B — at 2 p.m. in a first-round game.

Stroud 8, Latta 6

Latta trailed 7-4 after four innings but pushed across two runs in the top of the fifth to get within a single run. But the Panthers couldn't complete the comeback.

Landon Fortner led Latta at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. The Panthers had just three other hits — singles from Deakon Smith, Reese Littlefield and Holden Lee.

Smith finished 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, Littlefield went 1-for-2 with two walks, an RBI, two stolen bases and a run scored and Lee ended up 1-for-3 and scored a run.

Stroud had five total hits from five different players. Landry Davis and Josh Fine drove in two runs apiece and Jackson Campbell and Jessen Leathers scored three runs each for the Tigers.

Littlefield was the most effective of three LHS pitchers in the game. He struck out five, walked one and allowed no earned runs in 2.1 innings of relief.

Stryker Bray was the winning pitcher for Stroud. He struck out seven, walked one and allowed no earned runs in five innings of work.

Tupelo Cash(es) in on Asher

ASHER — The Tupelo Tigers got a big day at the plate from Cash Wafford in an 11-2 road win over Asher Tuesday night.

Coach Clay Weller's troops, ranked No. 3 in Class B, improved to 11-4 on the year, while 14th-ranked Asher dropped to 7-12.

Tupelo faces Vici at 6:30 p.m. today in the first round of the 2024 Stonewall Invitational. Coach David Rolette's Asher club is scheduled to battle Lindsay at 5:30 p.m. in the first round of the Heart of Oklahoma Tournament in Purcell.

The Tigers took charge after erupting for seven runs in the top of the second inning to forge an early 10-0 lead.

Wafford finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored to pace a 10-hit THS offense. Colton Bourland went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Luke Foreman ended up 1-for-1 with two walks and two runs scored for the visitors.

Taecyn Meek finished 1-fo-r3 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored and both Petyon Bills and Nate Medcalf drove in runs for the Tigers.

Asher was limited to just two hits, both by H Skender who went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.

Joseph Daniel was the winning pitcher for the Tigers. He struck out five, walked none and allowed just one hit in five scoreless innings.

Four Asher hurlers combined for four strikeouts and eight walks.

Romines, Stonewall shut down Vanoss

STONEWALL — Stonewall junior Kaden Romines shut down the Vanoss offense and the Longhorns defeated the Wolves 9-1 in a matchup between the two local squads Tuesday at Gibson Field.

Coach Dillon Monday's bunch, ranked No. 19 in Class A, improved to 14-6 on the year, while Vanoss saw a four-game winning streak come to an end and dropped to an even 8-8.

The Longhorns are preparing to host the 2024 Stonewall Invitation that begins today and runs through Saturday's 4 p.m. championship contest. Stonewall is scheduled to meet Caddo at 11 a.m. in a first-round game.

Vanoss is set to host Wetumka on April 15.

Stonewall 9, Vanoss 1

Romines struck out two, walked three and didn't allow an earned run in the five-inning contest to pick up the mound win.

Matt Wood absorbed the loss for Vanoss. He struck out three and walked four in four innings.

Stonewall finished with five hits in the contest. Mika Matt went 2-for-2 with a walk, two RBIs and two runs scored and Laden Bailey finished 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored to lead the way. Jamison Carrington finished 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.

Stonewall was aided by four Vanoss errors.

Wood recorded the only VHS hit of the contest — a double to lead off the top of the fourth inning. He later raced to third on an error and scored when Riley Carlos grounded into a double play. At that point, Stonewall led 7-1.
