Caitlyn Jenner opposes transgender girls competing in school sports: 'a question of fairness'
As she seeks the California governor's seat in the Gavin Newsom recall effort, Caitlyn Jenner made her stance known on transgender athletes competing in sports.
The 1976 Olympic gold medalist-turned reality TV star does not support transgender girls competing in girls school sports. She revealed her stance to TMZ in a Malibu coffee shop parking lot. TMZ published the brief interview on Sunday.
“This is a question of fairness," Jenner said. "That’s why I oppose biological boys who are trans competing in girls' sports in school.
"It just isn't fair. And we have to protect girls’ sports in our schools."
Jenner competed, won Olympic gold prior to her transition
Jenner won the decathlon gold medal while competing for the United States at the 1976 Olympic Games. She came out as transgender and completed her transition in 2015. She has remained in the public eye as a member of the Kardashian media empire.
Now, she's running as a Republican to replace Newsom as California's governor in a GOP-led recall effort. She does so as the topic of transgender girls competing in school sports has become a wedge issue in states across the country.
GOP lawmakers pushing to bar transgender girls in school sports
Led by GOP efforts, Mississippi, Tennessee, South Dakota, Arkansas and Idaho have passed laws or executive orders limiting transgender girls' access to competing in school sports. According to the Washington Post, legislatures in 34 other states are considering doing the same. California is not one of those states.
But the topic resonates politically as Jenner seeks power in California. Meanwhile, the statement she provided to TMZ is at odds with her stated stance in 2015.
"I also want to acknowledge all the young trans athletes who are out there given the chance to play sports as who they truly are," Jenner said during an acceptance speech at the 2015 ESPY Awards.
When TMZ asked Jenner if banning transgender girls from competition delegitimizes their identities, Jenner responded, "Have a good day" and got into her car.
