Cameron Carter-Vickers slaughtered as Celtic star struggles in USA defeat while ex-Hoops man sent off

Cameron Carter-Vickers played the second half as USA lost to Panama at Copa America - and then had his performance slated.

After winning their opening group game against Bolivia, the States lined up against the Panamanians last night hoping to join Uruguay at the top of the standings on six points. But things got off to the worst possible start when former Celtic loanee Timothy Weah was sent off after a VAR review on 18 minutes.

The Americans still managed to take a lead four minutes later through Monaco's former Arsenal striker Folarin Balogun. That wasn't to last long though as Cesar Blackman equalised and the teams went into the half-time break level. Hoops centre-back Carter-Vickers was then introduced as one of three half-time substitutes.

The ten men managed to hang on until near the end but suffered heartbreak when Jose Fajardo struck to make it 2-1. Adalbert Carrasquilla's red card evened up the numbers but USA were unable to capitalise.

Post-match, the American defence found themselves being criticised but Carter-Vickers was the one singled out. Ex-Fulham striker Brian McBride told Golazo America: "Across the backline, Antonee Robinson is the only one I give a grade to in this match to be honest. Cameron Carter-Vickers - whatever that lowest grade is we want to give a player, he was poor in the game and almost cost the U.S. before."

Punters back in the States were less than impressed also and one said: "I'm not sure we see Cameron Carter-Vickers wear the USMNT shirt again anytime soon. Really, really poor cameo."

Another added: "Cameron Carter-Vickers might be one of the most out of his depth players in the #USMNT setup. He has never put in a good shift (see tonight, loss in Trinidad, Iran at WC, etc.) Doesn't say much about Celtic or the Scottish League."
