Cameroon vs Brazil LIVE!

Vincent Aboubakar scored with a header two minutes into stoppage time in Cameroon's 1-0 win over Brazil at the World Cup on Friday, a result that still allowed the five-time champions to win the group and eliminated the Africans.

Aboubakar was then sent off with a second yellow card for taking off his shirt during his celebration. Brazil, which had already reached the knockout stage after victories over Serbia and Switzerland, will face South Korea in the round of 16.

Brazil finished with six points, the same as Switzerland but the South Americans had a better goal difference. The Swiss also advanced and will face Portugal. Cameroon ended with four points and Serbia one.

Cameroon vs Brazil highlights

  • CHANCE! Mbeumo header saved

  • SAVE! Epassy stops howler

Cameroon beat Brazil!

But they are still heading home from the World Cup...

CHANCE BRAZIL!

20:58 , Marc Mayo

90+9 mins: THAT HAD TO BE IT!

Marquinhos again the creator and Guimaraes is through, six yards out... he slices the bouncing ball over the bar.

CHANCE BRAZIL!

20:57 , Marc Mayo

90+8 mins: Marquinhos heads the ball back across and Martinelli gets underneath the snapshot header, and it pings over the bar.

20:56 , Marc Mayo

90+7 mins: A header is looped up for Epassy to claim.

Cameroon are only a couple of minutes away but Brazil are piling on the pressure...

GGGGOOOOOAAAALLLLL!!!! Cameroon 1-0 Brazil | Aboubakar

90+2 mins: ABOUBAKAR!!!! It had to be him!

A superb ball from the right is headed in and Cameroon lead Brazil!

Repeat: Cameroon lead Brazil.

20:50 , Marc Mayo

90 mins: A bit of space opening up in this one as Cameroon look leggy.

Martinelli spins a ball in but Wooh clears well.

We have NINE minutes of added-on time.

20:48 , Marc Mayo

88 mins: Raphinha and Guimaraes are the two substitutes who have made the big difference off the bench.

Pedro, meanwhile, spins his man by the penalty spot and doesn’t realise he has quite so much time in he box - hastily spooning a shot over.

20:44 , Marc Mayo

85 mins: Guimaraes is booked after a pull-back after the corner is cleared, he actually took that chance off the waiting Pedro’s boot - not that you can blame him.

Cameroon swap Mbekeli on for Ngamaleu.

CHANCE BRAZIL!

20:43 , Marc Mayo

84 mins: Raphinha beats his man and fizzes in a fine cross that Guiamares fires straight at Wooh and the ball spins behind, a great block!

20:42 , Marc Mayo

83 mins: Poor little clip into the box from Alves at the free kick. Cameroon force the ball back to Ederson and the clock is very much ticking on Brazil making it three wins from three.

20:40 , Marc Mayo

81 mins: Aboubakar makes Cameroon’s third absolute stonewall cynical challenge of the night, hauling down Martinelli for a booking just on the edge of the box.

20:40 , Marc Mayo

80 mins: Now it’s Aboubakar facing up Alves and firing at goal, winning a corner via a deflection.

Cameroon sniff a shock...

Brazil substitution

20:38 , Marc Mayo

79 mins: Raphinha on for Antony as Tite makes his final swap.

20:37 , Marc Mayo

78 mins: Toko Ekambi leaves Alves for dead and rolls the ball to Ntcham. He knows how to hit them from range and a low, drilled effort forces Ederson into action.

20:34 , Marc Mayo

75 mins: One of the biggest cheers of the night for Neymar as the injured Brazilian pops up on the big screen.

In theory, he’ll be back for the last-16 on Monday night.

20:32 , Marc Mayo

73 mins: We’re now slap bang in the middle of where Brazil broke the deadlock against Serbia and Switzerland.

Guimaraes rushes into a ping from 20 yards under pressure and flies it half into the sky.

20:30 , Marc Mayo

71 mins: Antony absolutely flung to the ground by Tolo, a really solid 7.5 for that pirouette from a standing start.

The referee is not fussed for it. Good on him.

Cameroon substitution

20:27 , Marc Mayo

68 mins: Ntcham on for Kunde in the centre of the park.

20:25 , Marc Mayo

66 mins: A big chance for Pedro to assert himself in the battle to be Brazil’s first port of call when Richarlison is not up front.

Flashes of skill from Arsenal’s Jesus but certainly not enough of an impact in a game he needed to perform in.

 (REUTERS)
(REUTERS)

Substitutions

20:23 , Marc Mayo

64 mins: Pedro on for Jesus as Brazil make their fourth change.

Toko Ekambi replaces Mbeumo for Cameroon.

20:21 , Marc Mayo

61 mins: Important for Cameroon to get a foot on the ball and quash that Brazilian surge.

That has quietened down the Lusail Stadium.

CHANCE BRAZIL!

20:16 , Marc Mayo

57 mins: Militao stabs a volley towards goal and Epassy spills the shot, before clawing it away from goal as two strikers lurk!

That was very nearly a howler...

Brazil upping the ante now as Antony tests the keeper from outside the box, winning a corner.

SAVE!

20:15 , Marc Mayo

56 mins: Martinelli has really been Brazil’s biggest threat tonight and he slams a shot on target from the left flank, Epassy darting upwards well to save.

Brazil substitutions

20:14 , Marc Mayo

55 mins: Fred and Rodrygo come off as well as Telles.

Guimaraes and Everton enter the fray, along with Marquinhos.

CHANCE BRAZIL!

20:12 , Marc Mayo

54 mins: Cameroon all at sea as Epassy slides in to gather under pressure from Rodrygo, the ball bouncing into the air before a very unconvincing collection from the Lions goalkeeper.

Brazil substitution

20:11 , Marc Mayo

52 mins: That is, indeed, that for Telles.

After carrying on for a moment, he hobbles off with Marquinhos ready to come on.

CLOSE!

20:10 , Marc Mayo

51 mins: Anguissa puts in a fine ball from the left and after a bit of work, Aboubakar has only one thing on his mind...

A fine shot across goal has Ederson beat and the far post, too.

We already have another goal down in Doha

20:09 , Marc Mayo

Freuler has put Switzerland 3-2 up against Serbia, which would put pay to any Cameroon dreams of making the last-16.

Back here, Telles is fine to continue.

20:07 , Marc Mayo

48 mins: Telles throws himself at the ball in and hits the deck hard, a hefty blow mid-air and awkward landing.

The physio is on.

20:06 , Marc Mayo

47 mins: Good intent from Cameroon from the off, Mbeumo galloping down the right to win a corner.

Kick-off!

20:04 , Marc Mayo

Brazil and Cameroon trot back out at Lusail Stadium for the second half.

No changes.

The chance of the half

19:59 , Marc Mayo

Mbeumo very nearly broke the deadlock at the end of the first half - what a save from Ederson!

Stats check

19:56 , Marc Mayo

Just the one shot for Cameroon compared to ten for Brazil, who have three on target to one.

The Selecao have bossed 69 per cent of possession although a lot of it has been in unthreatening areas. They’ve also had six corners.

Three bookings for Cameroon to one.

All square in the other Group G game

19:54 , Marc Mayo

A bit of a cracker taking place at Stadium 974 as Embolo hits back with a fourth goal in Serbia vs Switzerland.

It’s 2-2, which means the Swiss are currently going through - unless Cameroon can grab a win!

Half time! Brazil 0-0 Cameroon

19:49 , Marc Mayo

We’re goalless at the break and both sides have created chances.

Brazil on top but far from their full, flowing best.

 (AP)
(AP)

CHANCE CAMEROON!

19:48 , Marc Mayo

45+3 mins: The best chance of the half!

Ederson produces a brilliant save to deny Mbeumo’s header!

CHANCE BRAZIL!

19:46 , Marc Mayo

45+2 mins: It’s Martinelli again, on a long run across the 18-yard line and Epassy is not convincing in palming his shot over the bar!

Antony rolls a low ball into Rodrygo from the corner but he places an effort wide.

19:45 , Marc Mayo

45 mins: Drifting towards the half-time whistle, we have four minutes’ added time.

19:42 , Marc Mayo

42 mins: We’re heading to the break in very deja vu mood with Brazil comfortable yet not a huge attacking force.

That has pretty much been how their other group games have gone, which both featured second-half winners.

It will be interesting to see if they burst out their skin in the knockouts or try to maintain this theme against better opposition.

CHANCE BRAZIL!

19:38 , Marc Mayo

38 mins: Martinelli’s rangy run is ended by a tangle with a Cameroon defender and Fred takes up the mantle, feeding Antony.

He cuts onto his left and can only place a tame effort straight at Epassy.

A break in play now as Fai looks like he twisted his knee in that Martinelli challenge.

19:36 , Marc Mayo

36 mins: Antony pulls out his latest set of stepovers to enthuse the crowd but fair play to Tolo, who on a booking sticks a good foot in.

Over in tonight’s other Group G game, Vlahovic has made it 2-1 to Serbia in a quickire turnaround against Switzerland. As it stands, they are going through!

19:34 , Marc Mayo

34 mins: Rodrygo strolls away from this one and Alves gently floats his shot over the bar.

19:33 , Marc Mayo

32 mins: Booking number four of the night!

Fai takes out Rodrygo, again around 25 yards out as Cameroon resort to another cynical foul to halt the Brazil attacker in full flow.

This free-kick position is slightly better... and Dani Alves fancies it.

19:30 , Marc Mayo

30 mins: Rodrgyo clips a weak free-kick into the wall.

19:29 , Marc Mayo

We have a leveller in the other game, Mitrovic for Serbia!

19:28 , Marc Mayo

29 mins: Booking number three of the night as Kunde chops Rodrygo on a diagonal dribbled - only 22 or so yards away from goal...

19:28 , Marc Mayo

28 mins: Credit to Cameroon, these Brazil chances are not coming in long spells of domination.

Once again, they calm the game down as admittedly the South Americans are not fervently pressing them on the ball.

CHANCE BRAZIL!

19:25 , Marc Mayo

25 mins: Martinelli has been a real threat when Brazil get him involved and he leaves Fai in his dust before a cross to the near post is scrambled clear.

The Selecao work it to the right and Wooh stretches to turn the ball behind.

A short corner comes to nothing.

19:22 , Marc Mayo

22 mins: Another Brazil corner as Fred’s snapshot is deflected over.

Rodrygo’s delivery is very poor but Aboubakar punts it out for another at the near post. The next one’s better and Cameroon just about clear as Fabinho lurks!

 (REUTERS)
(REUTERS)

19:21 , Marc Mayo

We have a goal in the other game, Switzerland lead Serbia through Xherdan Shaqiri. That would be curtains for Cameroon’s qualification ambitions.

CHANCE CAMEROON!

19:20 , Marc Mayo

20 mins: Not bad at all from Choupo-Moting as he barrages his way into the box, shaking off a miscontrol before Bremer gets in a challenge by the six-yard box.

Antony gives it away in clearing though and a cross from the left has to be parried away by Ederson!

19:18 , Marc Mayo

18 mins: Cameroon do well to deal with a couple of Brazil corners, before Telles concedes a foul.

The Lions will be happy with their work to this point at least, with it still goalless in Serbia vs Switzerland - meaning, technically, they are one goal away from qualifying for the last-16...

CHANCE BRAZIL!

19:14 , Marc Mayo

14 mins: There he is!

Stunning ball from Fred into the box and Martinelli directs a good header towards goal that Epassy tips over!

19:13 , Marc Mayo

13 mins: We already have a Mexican wave around Lusail Stadium.

Brazil are focusing their efforts on the booked left-back Tolo, through Antony, which means we’ve not seen much of Arsenal’s Martinelli as of yet.

 (PA)
(PA)

19:10 , Marc Mayo

10 mins: Once again, not a hugely dynamic start from a Brazil side that has flown under the radar in terms of its defensive prowess.

Tite has clearly identified balance and stability as a key component to any world champion - which is no mean feat given his attacking talent is substantial.

19:07 , Marc Mayo

7 mins: Now a yellow card for Militao!

Jeers as he lands a stud on Anguissa’s ankle competing for a bouncing ball.

Ismail Elfath stamping his authority early on.

19:06 , Marc Mayo

6 mins: A good start from Antony brings the crowd into the game, a lovely drop of the shoulder to leave Tolo for dead - but a poor tackle from behind draws the foul and a first booking of the match.

19:04 , Marc Mayo

4 mins: Actually, a pretty stable start from Cameroon in possession.

A long ball out to the left is well headed out by Alves and Antony wins a foul.

CHANCE BRAZIL!

19:02 , Marc Mayo

2 mins: The Selecao break down the right through Antony and Jesus, the latter rolling in a dangerous cross that Fred just fails to connect with on the stretch.

Mark that down as a warning sign.

Kick off!

19:00 , Marc Mayo

Let’s get down to business.

It’s Cameroon vs Brazil in the final games of the 2022 World Cup group stage.

18:56 , Marc Mayo

After ‘Chant de Ralliement’ for Cameroon, Brazil’s ‘Hino Nacional Brasileiro’ gets a fervent airing - that instrumental opening giving way to some great volume at Lusail Stadium.

A banner reading ‘Get Well Soon Pele’ is unfurled in the stands.

Here come the players!

Pele update

18:53 , Marc Mayo

Pele was diagnosed with a respiratory infection but remains in a stable condition, a medical report showed on Friday.

The 82-year will remain hospitalized for the next few days to continue treatment, said the report from hospital Albert Einstein in Sao Paulo, which added that Pele presented a general improvement in health status.

There is quite a large tribute to the Brazilian icon inside the stadium.

No Onana for Cameroon

18:34 , Marc Mayo

For the second game in a row, Cameroon must do without Andre Onana.

Coach Rigobert Song decided to suspend the goalkeeper from his World Cup squad amid a falling out in the build-up to the Serbia draw.

Onana said: “I have put all my efforts and energy into finding solutions to a situation that a footballer often experiences, but there has been no will on the other side.

“Some moments are difficult to assimilate. However, I always respect and support the decisions of the people in charge of pursuing the success of our team and country.

“I extend all my strength to my team-mates because we demonstrated that we are capable of going very far in this competition.”

Tonight’s venue

Lusail Iconic Stadium hosts Brazil once again tonight, following their 2-0 win over Serbia to kick off their tournament.

The 88,000-seater venue will host the final and has had a latin feel to it already, with every game there so far hosting Argentina, Uruguay, Mexico or Brazil.

It will also host Brazil in the last-16 if they finish runners-up in their group.

Step forward, Cameroon!

Dani Alves makes history

18:07 , Marc Mayo

At the age of 39, Dani Alves starts at right-back tonight to becomes Brazil’s oldest-ever World Cup captain.

He said ahead of the game: “For me it represents the fact that I can wear the Brazil jersey. It makes me very proud to be here.

“I've been with the Brazilian squad for many years and to be able to wrap up this cycle, playing a World Cup, makes me very happy.

“It's been 16 years with the national squad and I've tried to do my very best. Life, I think, always rewards the people who love what they do, who truly do their best in the mission.”

Four changes to Cameroon

18:03 , Marc Mayo

Two new centre-backs for the Lions as Christopher Wooh and Enzo Ebosse come in.

There is a spot for Vincent Aboubakar up front in what looks like an attacking formation. Moumi Ngamaleu is on the wing.

A big night for the Arsenal duo

17:55 , Marc Mayo

Both Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli are in the XI for Brazil!

A whopping nine changes from Tite.

Today’s Brazil line-up

Neymar is in the house

17:44 , Marc Mayo

Injured star Neymar will be at Lusail Stadium tonight to watch Brazil's match against Cameroon.

It will be the first time Neymar joins his teammates at a match since injuring his right ankle in Brazil's opener against Serbia last week.

Neymar was the only player who stayed at the team's hotel in the match against Switzerland on Monday. He had stayed behind undergoing treatment for damaged ligaments on his foot.

Right back Danilo and left back Alex Sandro, who also won't play against Cameroon because of injuries, also were with the team at Lusail Stadium.

Evening Standard score prediction

17:20 , Marc Mayo

Although the Lions pulled off a fine comeback against Serbia, they are very much the underdogs in this game.

The scoreline really depends on whether Brazil throw off the shackles having sealed qualification or whether the absence of Neymar and their generally average displays in front of goal will be the key plotline.

A 3-0 Brazil win.

Group G permutations

17:15 , Marc Mayo

Right, let’s discuss what can happen for these two teams tonight.

Brazil win: The Selecao qualify as group winners, Cameroon are out

Draw: Same result, the Swiss cannot catch Brazil if they pick up a point and Cameroon are too far back.

Cameroon win: This would give Cameroon a shot at qualifying but only if Switzerland draw OR Serbia win but by the same or fewer number of goals, as to not overturn their goal difference disadvantage.

Full time in Group H!

Luis Suarez sobs as Uruguay crash out of the World Cup on goals scored!

They beat Ghana 2-0 but it’s not enough.

Predicted Brazil XI: Ederson; Militao, Thiago Silva, Marquinhos, Telles; Casemiro; Rodrygo, Guimaraes, Paqueta, Vinicius Jr; Jesus

Early Brazil team news
