Boxing: Canelo Álvarez defeats Jaime Munguía by unanimous decision: Round-by-round analysis

Álvarez defeats Munguía by unanimous decision

Munguía, displaying his tenacity, started the fight strong in Round 1.

In Round 2, he landed a powerful right hook to Álvarez's body, adding pressure to the Mexican star. Despite struggling to connect with the more than a dozen punches he threw at Álvarez in Round 3, Munguía's determination remained unwavering.

However, a right uppercut by Álvarez in Round 4 dropped Munguía to the ground, shaking his confidence. Álvarez's mastery of the sport was evident as he seemed to anticipate Munguía's moves, taking control of the fight in Round 6. Every shot Álvarez made in the rest of the rounds inflicted damage, showcasing his superior skill.

The judges scored the fight 115-113, 117-110 and 116-111 in favor of Álvarez. This victory, a testament to Álvarez's experience and skill, proved too much for the younger Munguía to overcome.

Potential opponent's for Álvarez

David Benavidez

During the post-fight interview, Canelo Álvarez was asked if he would fight David Benavidez after his victory over Jamie Munguía.

"If the money's right, I can fight [Benavidez] right now," Álvarez said. "I don't give a s---. It's only a matter of money at this point. Everybody is asking for everything.

Benavidez stated at his press conference for his fight against Oleksandr Gvozdyk on June 15 that he is open to fighting Álvarez.

"This is a fight that has to happen. And I'm going to keep putting these types of performances on where people are going to want to see it. The demand of this fight is really high. It's bad blood. I don't like him. He doesn't like me," Benavidez said to ESPN.

Terence Crawford

The undisputed welterweight champion, Terrance Crawford, was ringside for the Álvarez-Munguía fight and is a potential future opponent for Álvarez.

Crawford has made it clear that his focus is on the title fight against Israil Madrimov on Aug. 3 in Saudi Arabia, where he will move up to 154 pounds, but has expressed that he would be opened to a Canelo-Crawford fight in December or January of this year.
