Saul Canelo Alvarez settled his long-running feud with Gennady Golovkin by producing a dominant victory in Las Vegas on Saturday night. The pound-for-pound great executed the perfect gameplan in front of a partisan crowd on Mexican Independence weekend at the T-Mobile Arena, cruising to a comfortable unanimous decision win that finally closes the book on one of modern boxing’s most enduring and high-profile recent rivalries.

Canelo plans to avenge his shock defeat by light-heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol next after retaining his undisputed super-middleweight status, but first he will require a rest and likely surgery on a long-running left hand injury. Golovkin, meanwhile, says he has no plans to retire aged 40 and could now seek to become undisputed back at middleweight, where he is still a unified champion.

An intriguing undercard tonight saw boxing’s youngest active world champion Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez successfully defend his WBC super-flyweight title against Israel Gonzalez, while Britain’s Kieron Conway was bested by Austin ‘Ammo’ Williams and Gabriel Rosado was shut out by Ali Akhmedov.

But Canelo sneaks in two solid uppercuts as the battles continue at close range, with Golovkin then visibly backing up after getting caught with a piercing left to the body.

Golovkin tries to get the jab working and he’s grazed by another stinging uppercut as he tries to tie up.

An uppercut of his own from GGG, who then produces a succession of decent jabs. Where have they been?!

Canelo is showing off his variety and full arsenal now, jabbing very well and setting up a delightful uppercut that jolts his rival.

Better from Golovkin though, who forces himself onto the front foot and attacks head and body, putting far more venom on those punches.

Canelo fires off a body shot and hook in response, but Golovkin has him backed up once more, unleashing some solid blows upstairs.

It’s opening up towards the end of the ninth as both men let their hands go in an intriguing battle.

That’s more like it!

Golovkin’s first round in the bag, though it’s worth noting that Canelo landed plenty of his own there.

As has been pointed out multiple times on commentary, Golovkin looks constantly petrified of the power posed by Canelo.

The punches he is landing have no zip on them whatsoever.

Both men land in the eighth, with Golovkin finally starting to push the pace and apply some pressure.

But Canelo comes firing back at everything, as evidenced by that shot to the body and thudding hook upstairs.

Golovkin is breathing heavily but Canelo looks refreshed. The champion should be up 8-0 here.

Golovkin’s attacks are just so sloppy and lacking in any sort of snap or power, it’s so unlike him. His feet have got tangled more than once now too.

Credit to Canelo, who is completely controlling this bout and putting away round after round, fighting flawlessly without ever really hurting his opponent.

His tactics are on point and he’s easily up 7-0.

The crowd are starting to get disgruntled as the one-sided nature of this contest continues through the midway point.

This is so far removed from the first two fights between these arch-rivals, which were so absorbing and fiercely competitive.

Golovkin still looks nervy and tenative and he got caught with a trademark Canelo left to the body in that round that will have sapped his energy.

This is by far the most concerned I’ve ever seen Golovkin look about anybody’s power.

It’s sad to say, but he looks every one of his 40 years out there at the moment.

He’s painfully slow and getting tagged repeatedly by an increasingly confident Canelo, who lands another eye-catching hook to the head.

It’s so one-sided at the moment, with some half-hearted flurries from Golovkin in the middle of the ring followed by another overhand right hand upstairs from Canelo that lands clean.

He also stumbled back after another right hand that put him off-balance.

He’s coasting at the moment, bagging round after round. He has easily taken all five to this point.

Golovkin must respond and change the gameplan, fast.

Canelo is in a real rhythm here early on, he’s landing well to the body and connecting upstairs with lefts and rights.

Golovkin looks nervous and cagey, eating another left hook in the middle of the fourth.

He’s not working well enough behind that jab. He started very poorly against Ryota Murata back in April and it’s continued here, against a far better opponent.

Once again he’s caught by a right hand upstairs and pushed back without really responding.

Canelo 4-0. It’s too easy for him at the moment.

Canelo ups the tempo and intensity at the start of the third, landing a rangy left hand early on.

Another left hand fizzes in with a minute left in the round. It’s all a bit uncertain from Golovkin at the moment, he’s allowing Canelo to dictate the tempo and looks notably hesistant to let the punches fly.

He’s not letting his hands go and punishing Canelo when he does have him backed up, while clearly wary of the power when his rival does look to unleash.

It’s not particularly entertaining from Canelo, but it’s methodical and effective.

He’s much the busier fighter and already has a 3-0 lead here. Golovkin’s face is already getting marked up.

Canelo coming on strong with less than a minute left in the second, firing out a nice right to the body and letting his hands go with a bit of a flurry.

It remains cagey stuff for the most part, but Canelo with the brighter start. I’d imagine he’s quite comfortably bagged both of those rounds.

Rodriguez is annoyed with himself after walking onto a crisp shot at the start of the penultimate round.

More furious close-range battles ensue, with Gonzalez floored as he claims yet another low blow.

The replays confirm that was again very low indeed from Rodriguez, who is very fortunate to evade further punishment, having already had a point taken off.

On this occasion referee Kenny Bayless decides to take no action.

After that reprieve, Rodriguez continues his strong work and is now well on top here.

He’s still inflicting plenty of punishment at a relentlessly high tempo. There is simply no snap left on these exhausted Gonzalez punches.

Rodriguez is coming on very strong now, somehow sustaining this gruelling pace and connecting with some stylish punches, including a powerful left hand with around a minute left in the 10th.

He has more success with the left and unloads on Gonzalez against the ropes, pushing him around the ring with menace and judging his distance and angles beautifully.

A really strong round from the champion, who has taken control of this bout.

Gonzalez isn’t landing nearly as much now and his defences are being consistently breached due to sheer fatigue.

Fantastic action in the ninth as again these two warriors let their hands go and continue to exchange furious shots at close quarters.

The work rate and tempo from Rodriguez is just relentless, he’s landing the more powerful punches and several more of those blows are finding their way around Gonzalez’s increasingly tired defences now.

Gonzalez cannot afford a moment’s rest at this sort of pace and he’s evidently flagging a bit, eating some substantial punches on the inside.

Blood is now coming from a cut positioned just above the left eye of Gonzalez after a painful accidental clash of heads.

To add further insult to injury, Gonzalez is then caught and sent down by another low shot towards the end of the round.

There have been enough warnings now and referee Kenny Bayless decides to take a point off the champion - that could prove very interesting indeed if this fight remains close.

He obviously doesn’t think that Gonzalez possesses enough power to properly hurt him.

This is turning into a real war, with both men continually teeing off on each other at close quarters.

Rodriguez is the clear aggressor, but he’s content to back himself in those gruelling battles on the inside in the middle of the ring.

Both men land eye-catching blows, including a couple of powerful hooks, but the better work there was being done by the champion.

Just some signs there that Gonzalez, who himself is still only 25, was beginning to feel the pace of this bruising battle there.

A couple of rounds in quick succession likely put away by Bam.

A lot of low shots are going in here and referee Kenny Bayless warns both fighters to keep the punches up.

Rodriguez is rather gritting this out at the moment, standing and trading with Gonzalez in some furious close-range exchanges.

This is very nicely-balanced. Gonzalez giving a fantastic account of himself so far in his fourth world title challenge.

Rodriguez begins to show his class early in the fourth, upping the intensity and moving up through those gears once more.

But Gonzalez is undeterred and goes back to the body yet again, thundering in blow after blow in a concerted attempt to sap the young champion’s energy.

But it doesn’t seem to be effecting him too much.

Rodriguez ends the round well, but the sustained body attacks may have won it for the challenger.

That would make it even through four on my card.

Gonzalez is definitely having his moments here, he’s got relatively fast hands and is still targeting the body at every opportunity.

But the younger Rodriguez’s skill, speed and anticipation is beginning to cause clear problems, his movement is stellar and he again lets fly with the uppercuts.

He’s going up through the levels, with some intriguing close-range exchanges to close out the third.

This is thoroughly competitive, absorbing and highly technical battle through three.

Gonzalez is targeting Rodriguez’s body but looks very vulnerable to an uppercut counter and eats two more in the early stages of the second.

Gonzalez is certainly rangy, but Rodriguez is effective at closing down the space and again looks to unleash that fierce uppercut - what a weapon that is.

Rodriguez is jabbing very well now and comes within a whisker of landing a formidable left hand just before the bell.

A crunching straight left from the champion also landed flush down the pipe a little earlier.

Some good shots landed by Gonzalez early in a rather tentative opening round.

But he’s tagged with a decent right uppercut shortly before the bell as Rodriguez feels his way into this contest.

Rodriguez, undefeated at 16-0 with 11 stoppages, claimed his title by outpointing Carlos Cuadras in February and has already defended it once, dominating and impressively knocking out Srisaket Sor Rungvisai in the eighth round in his hometown of San Antonio in June.

He’s a huge favourite against the 28-4-1 Gonzalez, who is making his fourth attempt at becoming a super-flyweight world champion.

All of the Mexican’s previous three challenges have been unsuccessful, against Jerwin Ancajas, Britain’s Kal Yafai and Chocolatito.

Rosado has held various regional and continental belts and has twice unsuccessfully challenged for middleweight world gold.

The 36-year-old is 26-15-1 as a pro, but has lost three of his last six fights - including back-to-back losses against Jaime Munguia and Shane Mosley Jr, the latter contest taking place in April.

He also lost to Golovkin in 2013 and has also been bested by the likes of Daniel Jacobs, Jermell Charlo, David Lemieux and others.

Fellow big puncher Akhmedov is 18-1, with his first defeat coming against Carlos Gongora in December 2020.

He has since bounced back with wins over David Zegarra and Paul Valenzuela Jr.

The fight has been taken out of Conway, whose nose looks badly damaged.

It was very close at one stage, but Ammo has come on strong in the last few rounds.

Replays show the uppercut from Ammo did in fact connect with the forehead, so those appeals will not hold any weight.

There’s been some blood evident for a little while now and a close-up of Conway’s face shows that he might have a broken nose.

It’s becoming a mess and probably explains why Conway had suddenly got so passive, holding a lot and not throwing many punches.

To drive home his advantage, Williams drops his opponent early in the penultimate round.

Ammo well on top now with Conway’s face a bloodied picture and crimson smeared on his chest.

Williams remains the aggressor on the front foot and an issue with Conway’s left glove leads to a brief stoppage in proceedings.

A more measured and balanced approach from Ammo in this eighth round, he’s suddenly jabbing well now - particularly to the body - and trying to set up the big shots rather than repeatedly overloading.

It’s leading to a far more tentative approach from Conway, who is backed up and now unsure about when to let that right hand go.

The wrong time for Conway to suddenly get apprehensive and uncertain while not throwing much, against the advice of his corner.

I’ve got it 5-3 Williams through eight, but it’s a tough bout to score.

Much better from a more aggressive Williams, who finds success with a shuddering right hook early in the seventh.

He quickly follows it up by letting his hands go with Conway momentarily dazed.

No doubt sent out by his corner with a flea in his ear after a really poor sixth round, he’s visibly upped the tempo and intensity here.

It’s still all very untidy from Ammo, who is always open to that straight right and gets walked onto a good shot by Conway.

Williams is keeping up the pressure, but he’s loading up and missing so much and Conway is judging the distance so well, landing another couple of clean right hands.

It’s all very telegraphed and cumbersome from the American, who is falling way, way short with some very sluggish attacks.

Another round for Conway. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is all square through six.

Dare we even say maybe 4-2 to the man from Northampton?!

Conway is emboldened enough to start coming forward himself through the second half of the fifth after quite easily repelling Williams’ latest sustained bout of pressure.

This is somewhat unchartered territory for Ammo, who is used to just blasting out opponents with relatively little thought.

But Conway is smarter and bigger, and Williams is beginning to look a little uncomfortable and lacking in ideas, the longer this scheduled 10-rounder continues.

But Conway will remain only too aware of the power that his opponent carries.

Williams is throwing plenty now but Conway won’t be intimidated and comes firing back with one-twos of his own.

Conway is generally moving and sliding out of range well, countering nicely when Williams tries to uncork a massive uppercut that misses the target in the corner.

Another smart right hand lands well upstairs from Conway, with Williams a surprisingly open target as he lacks head movement while trying to set up his own big shots.

There are definitely flashes of decent quality from Conway here, who lands a really nice right hand of his own midway through the third.

A couple more solid shots follow from the Englishman, who was being continually forced back onto the defensive.

Conway again with a pretty triple jab and right hand, though Williams comes firing back with a lovely left hook.

Both men find their mark during a furious flurry to end the third, including a piercing left to the body from Ammo.

Conway needs to keep moving and not get caught flat-footed for too long, because he will swiftly regret it.

The first impressive flurry comes from Williams, with Conway - who had been fighting well off the back foot up until now - caught against the ropes for too long.

He’s clearly under orders to ratchet up the intensity after an uncharacteristically quiet opening round.

Not a bad start at all from Conway, who is working the angles well and digs in a couple of eye-catching blows to the body.
