Canelo vs GGG 3 LIVE!

Saul Canelo Alvarez settled his long-running feud with Gennady Golovkin by producing a dominant victory in Las Vegas on Saturday night. The pound-for-pound great executed the perfect gameplan in front of a partisan crowd on Mexican Independence weekend at the T-Mobile Arena, cruising to a comfortable unanimous decision win that finally closes the book on one of modern boxing’s most enduring and high-profile recent rivalries.

Canelo plans to avenge his shock defeat by light-heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol next after retaining his undisputed super-middleweight status, but first he will require a rest and likely surgery on a long-running left hand injury. Golovkin, meanwhile, says he has no plans to retire aged 40 and could now seek to become undisputed back at middleweight, where he is still a unified champion.

An intriguing undercard tonight saw boxing’s youngest active world champion Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez successfully defend his WBC super-flyweight title against Israel Gonzalez, while Britain’s Kieron Conway was bested by Austin ‘Ammo’ Williams and Gabriel Rosado was shut out by Ali Akhmedov.

Canelo on Bivol revenge and hand surgery

07:00 , George Flood

Here’s more from Canelo on his desire for revenge on Bivol and his need to undergo hand surgery.

“It’s very important for my legacy,” he said when asked about rematching the Russian.

“For me, I am proud. For my country, for my family, for my everything. It’s very important. I will beat him.”

On his injury, he said: “‘I need surgery on my hand after this. On my left hand. But I’m good, I’m a warrior and that is why I’m here.

“[It bothered me] a lot. I can’t hold a glass. It is really bad. But I am a warrior.”

No plans to retire from Golovkin at this stage...

05:50 , George Flood

Unsurprisingly, Canelo reiterates his desire to rematch Dmitry Bivol, calling it important for his legacy.

But first he insists he has to rest and will need surgery on a left hand injury that has been bothering him since the Caleb Plant fight last year.

05:46 , George Flood

Canelo and Golovkin are both very gracious in their respective post-fight interviews, with each confirming the long-running beef between them is now firmly squashed.

No chance we see a fourth instalment of this rivalry after that one-sided affair.

Golovkin also confirms that he has no plans to retire and reminds people that he still owns three world titles at middleweight.

Can he become undisputed at 160lbs?

Canelo beats Golovkin via unanimous decision

05:36 , George Flood

116-112, 115-113, 115-113 - all three cards in favour of Canelo, who remains the undisputed super-middleweight champion of the world.

All of those scores are very, very generous indeed towards GGG, to say the least. Highly questionable again.

Plenty of respect shown again between both men, nice to see after all the aggro between them over the years.

05:35 , George Flood

What are we saying then, 10-2 Canelo in terms of rounds?

Or will the judges be a bit kinder to GGG?

Canelo vs GGG 3

05:33 , George Flood

Round 12

Boos from the crowd as Canelo wisely stays out of trouble in a scrappy final round to what has been a disappointing contest.

The last bell sounds and it’s great to see a really warm embrace between these arch-rivals.

We go to the cards, but now doubt whatsoever as to the result tonight.

Canelo vs GGG 3

05:30 , George Flood

Into the 12th and final round we go.

All too comfortable for Canelo.

GGG needs to go for broke and seek the knockout...

Canelo vs GGG 3

05:29 , George Flood

Round 11

This is better from Golovkin sure, but it’s nowhere near enough now.

He’s far busier and making Canelo work and think, landing with much more frequency.

But the Mexican is rightly taking no risks, with more than enough rounds in the bag.

Canelo vs GGG 3

05:26 , George Flood

It has.

Work in the Canelo corner on a cut above his left eye before the start of the penultimate round.

Something for Golovkin to target? He’s got to go all out now as he’s surely miles behind on the scorecards.

Are we seeing the last couple of rounds of GGG’s illustrious career?

Canelo vs GGG 3

05:24 , George Flood

Round 10

Golovkin finds the mark with a decent left hook early in the 10th as he looks to build on that impressive ninth and sustain the pressure into the championship rounds of a fight that has breezed by.

But Canelo sneaks in two solid uppercuts as the battles continue at close range, with Golovkin then visibly backing up after getting caught with a piercing left to the body.

Golovkin tries to get the jab working and he’s grazed by another stinging uppercut as he tries to tie up.

An uppercut of his own from GGG, who then produces a succession of decent jabs. Where have they been?!

Canelo sinks in a nice right towards the end of the round before an accidental clash of heads before the bell.

Has that cut Canelo?

Canelo vs GGG 3

05:21 , George Flood

Round 9

Canelo is showing off his variety and full arsenal now, jabbing very well and setting up a delightful uppercut that jolts his rival.

Better from Golovkin though, who forces himself onto the front foot and attacks head and body, putting far more venom on those punches.

Canelo fires off a body shot and hook in response, but Golovkin has him backed up once more, unleashing some solid blows upstairs.

It’s opening up towards the end of the ninth as both men let their hands go in an intriguing battle.

That’s more like it!

Golovkin’s first round in the bag, though it’s worth noting that Canelo landed plenty of his own there.

Canelo vs GGG 3

05:17 , George Flood

Round 8

As has been pointed out multiple times on commentary, Golovkin looks constantly petrified of the power posed by Canelo.

The punches he is landing have no zip on them whatsoever.

Both men land in the eighth, with Golovkin finally starting to push the pace and apply some pressure.

But Canelo comes firing back at everything, as evidenced by that shot to the body and thudding hook upstairs.

Golovkin is breathing heavily but Canelo looks refreshed. The champion should be up 8-0 here.

Canelo vs GGG 3

05:13 , George Flood

Round 7

Golovkin’s attacks are just so sloppy and lacking in any sort of snap or power, it’s so unlike him. His feet have got tangled more than once now too.

Credit to Canelo, who is completely controlling this bout and putting away round after round, fighting flawlessly without ever really hurting his opponent.

His tactics are on point and he’s easily up 7-0.

Round 6

The crowd are starting to get disgruntled as the one-sided nature of this contest continues through the midway point.

This is so far removed from the first two fights between these arch-rivals, which were so absorbing and fiercely competitive.

Golovkin still looks nervy and tenative and he got caught with a trademark Canelo left to the body in that round that will have sapped his energy.

Canelo vs GGG 3

05:07 , George Flood

Trainer Johnathon Banks tells GGG before the start of the sixth that they have to change the approach.

It’s been cagey, inspid and completely uneffective so far.

So easy for Canelo.

Canelo vs GGG 3

05:05 , George Flood

Round 5

This is by far the most concerned I’ve ever seen Golovkin look about anybody’s power.

It’s sad to say, but he looks every one of his 40 years out there at the moment.

He’s painfully slow and getting tagged repeatedly by an increasingly confident Canelo, who lands another eye-catching hook to the head.

It’s so one-sided at the moment, with some half-hearted flurries from Golovkin in the middle of the ring followed by another overhand right hand upstairs from Canelo that lands clean.

He also stumbled back after another right hand that put him off-balance.

He’s coasting at the moment, bagging round after round. He has easily taken all five to this point.

Golovkin must respond and change the gameplan, fast.

Canelo vs GGG 3

05:01 , George Flood

Round 4

Canelo is in a real rhythm here early on, he’s landing well to the body and connecting upstairs with lefts and rights.

Golovkin looks nervous and cagey, eating another left hook in the middle of the fourth.

He’s not working well enough behind that jab. He started very poorly against Ryota Murata back in April and it’s continued here, against a far better opponent.

Once again he’s caught by a right hand upstairs and pushed back without really responding.

Canelo 4-0. It’s too easy for him at the moment.

Canelo vs GGG 3

04:57 , George Flood

Round 3

Canelo ups the tempo and intensity at the start of the third, landing a rangy left hand early on.

Another left hand fizzes in with a minute left in the round. It’s all a bit uncertain from Golovkin at the moment, he’s allowing Canelo to dictate the tempo and looks notably hesistant to let the punches fly.

He’s not letting his hands go and punishing Canelo when he does have him backed up, while clearly wary of the power when his rival does look to unleash.

It’s not particularly entertaining from Canelo, but it’s methodical and effective.

He’s much the busier fighter and already has a 3-0 lead here. Golovkin’s face is already getting marked up.

Canelo vs GGG 3

04:53 , George Flood

Round 2

Canelo is the man coming forward here, but both fighters throw out and land decent jabs and hooks upstairs.

Canelo coming on strong with less than a minute left in the second, firing out a nice right to the body and letting his hands go with a bit of a flurry.

It remains cagey stuff for the most part, but Canelo with the brighter start. I’d imagine he’s quite comfortably bagged both of those rounds.

Canelo vs GGG 3

04:49 , George Flood

Round 1

Golovkin’s added size is really noticeable during the early exchanges.

This is the heaviest he has ever been for a fight at 167.8lbs.

It’s a cagey and quiet opening round amid a tremendous crackling atmosphere.

Canelo is trying to be the aggressor, coming forward on the front foot and holding centre ring.

Some brief skirmishes but nothing much of note landed in a tight, tight first three minutes.

Canelo vs GGG 3

The refereee reads his instructions, the arch-rivals touch gloves and we are underway at last!

Let’s hope this enormous trilogy showdown lives up to the billing.

One of modern boxing’s biggest rivalries is about to be settled, once and for all...

04:44 , George Flood

Deafening noise during Diamante’s typically spine-tingling introductions.

A massive event feel to this, as there should be.

Massive, massive support for Canelo, as you might expect.

04:41 , George Flood

Both men are in the ring and it’s time for the pre-fight introductions from David Diamante.

So much anticipation ahead of this one.

04:39 , George Flood

A word for those pre-fight hype videos, by the way.

Golovkin said “champions don’t cheat ever” in his, in a clear shot at Canelo’s previous failed drugs tests.

“What the f**k have you done this past three years?” was the retort from Canelo in his video.

Added spice! As if any was needed...

04:37 , George Flood

It’s the full works from Canelo as usual on Mexican Independence weekend, with a singer and mariachi band taking centre stage before his ring walk.

Finally he emerges to a great roar from this Las Vegas crowd, which contains more than a few of his compatriots.

04:34 , George Flood

After a long build-up video on the jumbotron, it’s a typically no-frills entrance from GGG, who comes to the ring in his usual blue and gold robe with Seven Nation Army by the White Stripes playing in the background.

Now Canelo emerges from his dressing room, wearing the white, red and green of Mexico and his own bold signature logo.

You can bet his entrance will be more theatrical and memorable, as ever.

Main event ring walks

04:31 , George Flood

‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ has also been belted out and it’s finally time for the main event ring walks in Las Vegas!

First to make the long walk from backstage is the great Gennady Golovkin.

04:29 , George Flood

Carolina Ross now graces the ring to sing the Mexican anthem, Himno Nacional Mexicano.

Plenty of Mexicans in the crowd at the 20,000-capacity T-Mobile Arena tonight, who would love their beloved Canelo to cap Mexican Independence weekend with a huge comeback victory.

04:26 , George Flood

It’s time for the national anthems!

Dimash Qudaibergen is performing the Kazakh anthem, Menıñ Qazaqstanym.

Bizarre sound on that. Was he lip syncing?!

04:22 , George Flood

The atmosphere is building nicely as both Canelo and Golovkin run through the final preparations in their respective dressing rooms.

The final chapter in this enduring rivalry is about to be written. And I can’t wait!

So much on the line tonight for both men.

Canelo vs GGG 3 is NEXT!

04:14 , George Flood

Just the HUGE main event to come now in Las Vegas!

One of modern boxing’s most high-profile and enthralling rivalries will be settled once and for all NEXT as arch-rivals Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin go head to head for the third time for the undisputed super-middleweight championship of the world.

It’s a trilogy showdown four years in the making. Don’t go anywhere. You won’t want to miss this!

Rodriguez outpoints Gonzalez to retain belt

04:08 , George Flood

118-109, 117-110, 114-113 (!) - all three judges scorecards are in favour of Rodriguez, who retains his WBC super-flyweight belt for the second time with a deserved unanimous decision victory.

He remains boxing’s youngest active world champion aged 22, while it’s back to the drawing board yet again for the plucky Gonzalez despite a spirited effort in what was his fourth unsuccessful title challenge.

But at 25, he’s got plenty of time left for a few more!

Rodriguez vs Gonzalez

04:05 , George Flood

Round 12

A confident finish from Rodriguez, who has some engine on him and is so accurate with his punches. His movement is just fantastic.

He’s had to work hard for this, but he’s controlled most of the second half of the fight after an uncertain start and deserves his inevitable victory.

He’ll have to watch those low blows, though. They could prove so costly on another night.

Rodriguez vs Gonzalez

04:02 , George Flood

Into the final three minutes we go.

The WBC super-flyweight title is staying with Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez, bar a monumental effort from Israel Gonzalez in the 12th round.

(AP)

Rodriguez vs Gonzalez

04:00 , George Flood

Round 11

Rodriguez is annoyed with himself after walking onto a crisp shot at the start of the penultimate round.

More furious close-range battles ensue, with Gonzalez floored as he claims yet another low blow.

The replays confirm that was again very low indeed from Rodriguez, who is very fortunate to evade further punishment, having already had a point taken off.

On this occasion referee Kenny Bayless decides to take no action.

After that reprieve, Rodriguez continues his strong work and is now well on top here.

He’s still inflicting plenty of punishment at a relentlessly high tempo. There is simply no snap left on these exhausted Gonzalez punches.

Rodriguez vs Gonzalez

03:55 , George Flood

Round 10

Rodriguez is coming on very strong now, somehow sustaining this gruelling pace and connecting with some stylish punches, including a powerful left hand with around a minute left in the 10th.

He has more success with the left and unloads on Gonzalez against the ropes, pushing him around the ring with menace and judging his distance and angles beautifully.

A really strong round from the champion, who has taken control of this bout.

Gonzalez isn’t landing nearly as much now and his defences are being consistently breached due to sheer fatigue.

Rodriguez vs Gonzalez

03:51 , George Flood

Round 9

Fantastic action in the ninth as again these two warriors let their hands go and continue to exchange furious shots at close quarters.

The work rate and tempo from Rodriguez is just relentless, he’s landing the more powerful punches and several more of those blows are finding their way around Gonzalez’s increasingly tired defences now.

Gonzalez cannot afford a moment’s rest at this sort of pace and he’s evidently flagging a bit, eating some substantial punches on the inside.

Into the championship rounds we go! Rodriguez surely a few clear now.

Rodriguez vs Gonzalez

03:48 , George Flood

Round 8

Blood is now coming from a cut positioned just above the left eye of Gonzalez after a painful accidental clash of heads.

To add further insult to injury, Gonzalez is then caught and sent down by another low shot towards the end of the round.

There have been enough warnings now and referee Kenny Bayless decides to take a point off the champion - that could prove very interesting indeed if this fight remains close.

A tough round for Gonzalez.

Rodriguez vs Gonzalez

03:45 , George Flood

Round 7

Gonzalez is becoming frustrated now as he’s being ground down by Rodriguez.

The champion is having to work very hard indeed, but he’s forcing the tempo and keeping up the pressure.

He’s having the better of those angry close-range exchanges and is surprisingly content to keep just hanging in the pocket and trading.

He obviously doesn’t think that Gonzalez possesses enough power to properly hurt him.

Not long to wait now...

03:40 , George Flood

Rodriguez vs Gonzalez

03:39 , George Flood

Round 6

This is turning into a real war, with both men continually teeing off on each other at close quarters.

Rodriguez is the clear aggressor, but he’s content to back himself in those gruelling battles on the inside in the middle of the ring.

Both men land eye-catching blows, including a couple of powerful hooks, but the better work there was being done by the champion.

Just some signs there that Gonzalez, who himself is still only 25, was beginning to feel the pace of this bruising battle there.

A couple of rounds in quick succession likely put away by Bam.

Rodriguez vs Gonzalez

03:34 , George Flood

Round 5

A lot of low shots are going in here and referee Kenny Bayless warns both fighters to keep the punches up.

Rodriguez is rather gritting this out at the moment, standing and trading with Gonzalez in some furious close-range exchanges.

This is very nicely-balanced. Gonzalez giving a fantastic account of himself so far in his fourth world title challenge.

I’ve got it 3-2 Rodriguez heading into the sixth of 12 scheduled rounds.

Rodriguez vs Gonzalez

03:30 , George Flood

Round 4

Rodriguez begins to show his class early in the fourth, upping the intensity and moving up through those gears once more.

But Gonzalez is undeterred and goes back to the body yet again, thundering in blow after blow in a concerted attempt to sap the young champion’s energy.

But it doesn’t seem to be effecting him too much.

Rodriguez ends the round well, but the sustained body attacks may have won it for the challenger.

That would make it even through four on my card.

Rodriguez vs Gonzalez

03:27 , George Flood

Round 3

Gonzalez is definitely having his moments here, he’s got relatively fast hands and is still targeting the body at every opportunity.

But the younger Rodriguez’s skill, speed and anticipation is beginning to cause clear problems, his movement is stellar and he again lets fly with the uppercuts.

He’s going up through the levels, with some intriguing close-range exchanges to close out the third.

This is thoroughly competitive, absorbing and highly technical battle through three.

 (AP)
(AP)

Rodriguez vs Gonzalez

03:22 , George Flood

Round 2

Gonzalez is targeting Rodriguez’s body but looks very vulnerable to an uppercut counter and eats two more in the early stages of the second.

Gonzalez is certainly rangy, but Rodriguez is effective at closing down the space and again looks to unleash that fierce uppercut - what a weapon that is.

Rodriguez is jabbing very well now and comes within a whisker of landing a formidable left hand just before the bell.

A crunching straight left from the champion also landed flush down the pipe a little earlier.

Rodriguez vs Gonzalez

03:19 , George Flood

Round 1

Some good shots landed by Gonzalez early in a rather tentative opening round.

But he’s tagged with a decent right uppercut shortly before the bell as Rodriguez feels his way into this contest.

Some barked instructions and a little encouraging slap around the face for good measure for Gonzalez before the start of the second.

Rodriguez vs Gonzalez

03:15 , George Flood

It’s filling up nicely in the stands at T-Mobile Arena and there’s a great reception for boxing’s youngest active world champion, who is lapping up the atmosphere in his black and white trunks and striking green gloves.

No stranger to world title tilts, Gonzalez is in white, red and green shorts and black and white gloves. He certainly doesn’t lack confidence either!

Here we go...

Rodriguez vs Gonzalez

03:10 , George Flood

Rodriguez, undefeated at 16-0 with 11 stoppages, claimed his title by outpointing Carlos Cuadras in February and has already defended it once, dominating and impressively knocking out Srisaket Sor Rungvisai in the eighth round in his hometown of San Antonio in June.

He’s a huge favourite against the 28-4-1 Gonzalez, who is making his fourth attempt at becoming a super-flyweight world champion.

All of the Mexican’s previous three challenges have been unsuccessful, against Jerwin Ancajas, Britain’s Kal Yafai and Chocolatito.

Rodriguez vs Gonzalez next

03:05 , George Flood

It’s already time for the co-main event of the night!

Akhmedov shuts out Rosado

03:00 , George Flood

All three judges score the bout 100-90 in favour of Akhmedov, who improves his pro record to 19-1-0 and picks up the vacant WBC silver and IBF North American super-middleweight titles.

Rosado, meanwhile, falls to 26-16-1.

Nice to see the respect shown by Akhmedov towards Rosado after the final bell.

Akhmedov vs Rosado

02:58 , George Flood

Round 10

No chance at all.

The talented Akhmedov efficiently completes the most one-sided of victories, a shut-out to continue his comeback from that lone defeat by Carlos Gongora.

Rosada is a warrior and veteran of so many memorable wars, but he was absolutely second best from the first bell tonight.

Is that the final time we see him in the ring? I rather hope so.

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

Akhmedov vs Rosado

02:54 , George Flood

Round 9

Rosado needed this to become a gruelling brawl early doors to have any chance here and that never came anywhere close to materialising.

It’s another dominant round for Akhmedov, who could well be pummelling the proud but spent warrior Rosado into retirement with such a one-sided beatdown.

Banks warns Akhmedov to stay fully alert for the final three minutes.

Surely no chance Rosado uncorks that massive last-gasp shot to rescue this... is there?

Akhmedov vs Rosado

02:51 , George Flood

Round 8

A quick welfare check from referee Tony Weeks on Rosado at the end of another firmly one-sided eighth round.

He’s fine to continue, but is being absolutely schooled. 80-72 and a shut-out for Akhmedov to this point.

The Kazakh is easily coasting to the widest of points victories.

Two more rounds left for Rosado to endure. It will take a miracle to avoid succumbing to his 16th defeat from a 44th professional bout.

You certainly can never question his toughness, but how many more nights like this has the man from Philadelphia got left in him?

The difference in speed and footwork is a chasm.

Akhmedov vs Rosado

02:47 , George Flood

Round 7

The ultra-focused Akhmedov well on top again, quickly returning anything Rosado throws at him with serious interest.

He can’t take his eye off the ball here, but there’s no chance he’s dropped a single round so far.

The celebrities are starting to arrive backstage at T-Mobile Arena, with Creed star Michael B. Jordan granted an audience with a very relaxed Canelo and Chepo Reynoso.

It was revealed this week that Canelo will make his acting debut alongside Jordan in Creed 3, following in the footsteps of the likes of Tony Bellew.

Akhmedov vs Rosado

02:42 , George Flood

Round 6

More of the same for most of the sixth from Akhmedov, who has taken every single round with ease.

The last 30 seconds or so provide the slightest glimmer of optimism for the tough-as-nails Rosado, who sustains a bit of pressure.

However, it’s a very fleeting glimpse and normal order is quickly restored.

Akhmedov vs Rosado

02:38 , George Flood

Round 5

The round of the night so far for Akhmedov, who continues to combine phenomenal hand speed, ultra-nimble footwork and sublime variety to devastating effect.

He detonates countless big shots in the fifth, including a couple of monster right hands that shake the durable Rosado, who deserves immense credit for staying upright.

He may have lost many things, but he’s still got a chin to envy.

Rosado is trying to apply pressure, but Akhmedov is in a different league at the moment.

Akhmedov vs Rosado

02:33 , George Flood

This is an Akhmedov shut-out so far, surely.

Rosado is a veteran of so many gruelling battles, but he isn’t going to get one here.

“He needs a brawl, not you,” Banks tells Akhmedov before the start of the fifth.

“Don’t give him what he wants.”

Akhmedov vs Rosado

02:32 , George Flood

Round 4

Akhmedov steps up the tempo at the start of the fourth, with Rosado constantly struggling with the hand speed and far more superior footwork.

Freddie Roach is in Rosado’s corner these days and he will be concerned by what he’s seeing.

This is very one-sided through four, with Akhmedov showing a fantastic range and variety of punches and working the angles beautifully.

He’s fighting well as the aggressor and also countering smartly when he needs to. Really impressive stuff.

Akhmedov vs Rosado

02:27 , George Flood

Round 3

Rosado is sluggish with the jab and it’s leaving him open to some lightning fast, fizzing counters from Akhmedov, whose speed, distance and timing is on point.

He’s drifting in and out of range at ease, piecing together some piercing combinations and jabbing effectively.

Akhmedov is being told by trainer Johnathon Banks to keep targeting the swollen left eye of Rosado with that stiff jab.

Akhmedov vs Rosado

02:25 , George Flood

Round 2

Akhmedov’s hands are a blur and he’s throwing plenty in the second, forcing the tempo and showing his variety to both body and head - jabs and straight hands finding their mark while he looks for the big overhand right.

Rosado is struggling with his speed and misses badly with a couple of wild swings just before the bell at the end of the second.

Nice footwork from the Kazakh.

Akhmedov vs Rosado

02:21 , George Flood

Round 1

No shortage of action in the first, with Akhmedov potentially hurt by a right hand from old warrior Rosado.

Rosado’s eye is swollen already, with Akhmedov very keen to demonstrate his fast hand speed at the earliest opportunity.

A close opening round, likely shaded by Akhmedov.

Akhmedov vs Rosado

02:18 , George Flood

Here we go!

Straight into the action, as you’d expect between these two...

Akhmedov vs Rosado

02:18 , George Flood

Rosado has held various regional and continental belts and has twice unsuccessfully challenged for middleweight world gold.

The 36-year-old is 26-15-1 as a pro, but has lost three of his last six fights - including back-to-back losses against Jaime Munguia and Shane Mosley Jr, the latter contest taking place in April.

He also lost to Golovkin in 2013 and has also been bested by the likes of Daniel Jacobs, Jermell Charlo, David Lemieux and others.

Fellow big puncher Akhmedov is 18-1, with his first defeat coming against Carlos Gongora in December 2020.

He has since bounced back with wins over David Zegarra and Paul Valenzuela Jr.

Akhmedov vs Rosado next

02:13 , George Flood

The next fight on the bill sees Golovkin’s fellow Kazakh Ali Akhmedov take on the veteran Gabriel Rosado for the vacant WBC silver and IBF North American super-middleweight titles.

Williams vs Conway

01:58 , George Flood

A straightforward final round from Williams, who lands a few more solid punches and rather coasts to the finish line.

The fight has been taken out of Conway, whose nose looks badly damaged.

Not the sort of emphatic victory we are used to seeing from Ammo, who is obviously some way off the required level for a world title shot.

But he will have learned a lot from a decent, different test and more rounds under his belt.

Official scores to come, but surely no doubt as to the outcome of this bout.

Williams vs Conway

01:55 , George Flood

Into the final round we go.

Conway is going to need a huge three minutes here to prevent Williams from claiming a decision victory.

It was very close at one stage, but Ammo has come on strong in the last few rounds.

Conway’s face is becoming a real mess.

Williams vs Conway

01:54 , George Flood

Conway’s trainer and father James is furious with the referee at the end of the ninth, claiming that it was never a knockdown and that Williams’ shot missed by miles.

Replays show the uppercut from Ammo did in fact connect with the forehead, so those appeals will not hold any weight.

Conway is told in no uncertain terms to go out and push Williams back, walking him onto shots and making him miss.

Round 9

There’s been some blood evident for a little while now and a close-up of Conway’s face shows that he might have a broken nose.

It’s becoming a mess and probably explains why Conway had suddenly got so passive, holding a lot and not throwing many punches.

To drive home his advantage, Williams drops his opponent early in the penultimate round.

Ammo well on top now with Conway’s face a bloodied picture and crimson smeared on his chest.

Williams vs Conway

01:50 , George Flood

Round 8

Williams remains the aggressor on the front foot and an issue with Conway’s left glove leads to a brief stoppage in proceedings.

A more measured and balanced approach from Ammo in this eighth round, he’s suddenly jabbing well now - particularly to the body - and trying to set up the big shots rather than repeatedly overloading.

It’s leading to a far more tentative approach from Conway, who is backed up and now unsure about when to let that right hand go.

The wrong time for Conway to suddenly get apprehensive and uncertain while not throwing much, against the advice of his corner.

I’ve got it 5-3 Williams through eight, but it’s a tough bout to score.

Williams vs Conway

01:44 , George Flood

Round 7

Much better from a more aggressive Williams, who finds success with a shuddering right hook early in the seventh.

He quickly follows it up by letting his hands go with Conway momentarily dazed.

No doubt sent out by his corner with a flea in his ear after a really poor sixth round, he’s visibly upped the tempo and intensity here.

It’s still all very untidy from Ammo, who is always open to that straight right and gets walked onto a good shot by Conway.

Williams vs Conway

Round 6

Williams is keeping up the pressure, but he’s loading up and missing so much and Conway is judging the distance so well, landing another couple of clean right hands.

It’s all very telegraphed and cumbersome from the American, who is falling way, way short with some very sluggish attacks.

Another round for Conway. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is all square through six.

Dare we even say maybe 4-2 to the man from Northampton?!

Williams vs Conway

01:38 , George Flood

Round 5

Conway is emboldened enough to start coming forward himself through the second half of the fifth after quite easily repelling Williams’ latest sustained bout of pressure.

This is somewhat unchartered territory for Ammo, who is used to just blasting out opponents with relatively little thought.

But Conway is smarter and bigger, and Williams is beginning to look a little uncomfortable and lacking in ideas, the longer this scheduled 10-rounder continues.

But Conway will remain only too aware of the power that his opponent carries.

Williams vs Conway

“Walk him onto it... he’s always open,” is the repeated call from Conway’s corner as we begin round five...

Williams vs Conway

Round 4

Williams is throwing plenty now but Conway won’t be intimidated and comes firing back with one-twos of his own.

Conway is generally moving and sliding out of range well, countering nicely when Williams tries to uncork a massive uppercut that misses the target in the corner.

Another smart right hand lands well upstairs from Conway, with Williams a surprisingly open target as he lacks head movement while trying to set up his own big shots.

A nice round from Conway, who is landing clean rights.

Even after four?

Williams vs Conway

01:28 , George Flood

Round 3

There are definitely flashes of decent quality from Conway here, who lands a really nice right hand of his own midway through the third.

A couple more solid shots follow from the Englishman, who was being continually forced back onto the defensive.

Conway again with a pretty triple jab and right hand, though Williams comes firing back with a lovely left hook.

Both men find their mark during a furious flurry to end the third, including a piercing left to the body from Ammo.

Conway needs to keep moving and not get caught flat-footed for too long, because he will swiftly regret it.

Round 2

Yeah, replays show that was a superb uppercut from Williams and it obviously made Conway think twice.

Williams vs Conway

Round 2

Conway has success early in the second with the backhand, but Williams begins to up the tempo and switch up his attacks, backing up Conway in the corner.

The first impressive flurry comes from Williams, with Conway - who had been fighting well off the back foot up until now - caught against the ropes for too long.

Williams is closing the gap now and making Conway feel his power, with a warning of what is likely to come... a peach of a right uppercut landed flush.

He’s clearly under orders to ratchet up the intensity after an uncharacteristically quiet opening round.

Williams vs Conway

01:20 , George Flood

Round 1

Conway certainly has size on his side - he’s a big, big middleweight.

Not a bad start at all from Conway, who is working the angles well and digs in a couple of eye-catching blows to the body.

But he’s being walked down by Williams, who has landed a few solid shots of his own early doors as he sizes up his opponent and works behind the jab.

Both men land to the body well before the bell.

A positive start from Conway, but there is surely much, much more to come from Ammo.

The first bell sounds and we are off and running with the main card in Las Vegas!

Can Conway spring an upset here, or will Williams continue his undefeated streak?

Let’s find out. You feel the Englishman will likely have to weather an early storm...

Conway on his way to the ring as the crowd begins to build in Las Vegas, draped in a white robe with white gloves.

The undefeated Williams quickly follows, with garish tassled gold trunks and brown, green and gold gloves.

Explosive Houston southpaw ‘Ammo’ will be out for another highlight-reel knockout tonight as he looks to move up the levels.

We last saw Williams, who has been admirably open about his mental health struggles over the past year or so, in April, when he crushed Chordale Booker in the first round on the undercard of the Taylor-Serrano classic at Madison Square Garden.

Williams vs Conway opens main card

01:05 , George Flood

It’s almost time for the main card action in Las Vegas!

First up on the televised bill at T-Mobile Arena is Northampton’s Kieron Conway, who is fighting for the second time in as many months after stopping Gregory Trenel in Sheffield last month.

He also outpointed James Metcalf in Liverpool last October to bounce back from his second career defeat by Souleymane Cissokho on the Canelo-Saunders undercard in Texas.

He has a tough task ahead against undefeated American talent Austin ‘Ammo’ Williams, who is 11-0 with nine stoppages.

Hearn: Canelo vs Golovkin an “all-out war"

Sunday 18 September 2022 00:53 , George Flood

Here are Eddie Hearn’s fuller thoughts on a titanic main event from the DAZN boxing show this week...

“This is going to be an absolute all-out war. Gennady Golovkin, in his eyes, stone cold, ripped to shreds at 168 pounds, looked so good,” said the Matchroom chief.

“The last couple of fights, you see the cheekbones a little bit more at 160lbs. I’m telling you, this guy is ready for battle. And Canelo, you saw the shadow boxing after that. He’s ready to explode. This is going to be epic.

“Don’t forget; this guy has boxed Canelo Alvarez for 24 rounds. It’s not like we’re watching a fight, and we’re going, ‘Oh, I wonder if this guy is good enough to compete with him?’.

“A lot of people thought he won the first fight, and the second fight was razor-thin as well. This is going to be the same kind of fight. Canelo Alvarez, from the first bell, is going to be trying to knock Gennady Golovkin out.

“He may be reckless, he may be emotional, and if he is, Gennady Golovkin is going to be right in front of him, unloading his artillery on Canelo Alvarez as well. Honestly, back and forth, this is going to be absolutely brutal.”

Hearn predicts main event knockout

Sunday 18 September 2022 00:46 , George Flood

Hearn also shares his belief on DAZN that tonight’s huge main event is not going the distance.

That would be quite the surprise, given that neither Canelo nor Golovkin have ever been knocked down in their respective professional careers.

Sunday 18 September 2022 00:44 , George Flood

Eddie Hearn is positively beaming about the potential of young Matchroom charge Pacheco, who is a big puncher and just massive for the weight.

You’ll surely see him swiftly taken up the divisions if he can achieve success at 168lbs.

Hearn says he wants one more outing for Pacheco this year as he continues to go up the levels, possibly on the Chocolatito-Estrada trilogy undercard in December.

Pacheco drops and stops Collazo in round five

Sunday 18 September 2022 00:33 , George Flood

Pacheco continues to up the ante, turning up the heat further to punish a very tenative and hesistant Collazo... WHO IS DOWN WITH A MINUTE LEFT IN ROUND FIVE!

Collazo falls like a felled tree as he’s caught flush by a monster right hand upstairs and a volley of short shots to the body. Ouch.

He gets to his feet, but Pacheco smells blood and instantly swarms his opponent in a fierce flurry for the finish.

Collazo is being simply pummelled now by a succession of heavy shots and the referee eventually steps in to wave it off.

Emphatic from Pacheco, who moves to 16-0 as a 21-year-old with 13 knockouts. The biggest win of his young career to date!

And he picks up the WBC USNBC silver super-middleweight title in the process.

Pacheco vs Collazo

Sunday 18 September 2022 00:29 , George Flood

Pacheco steps up the tempo in the fourth, moving quicker to be able to get inside and uncork that stinging right hand.

One such right hurts Collazo midway through the round!

Pacheco is looking looser now, trying to step on the gas and keep finding the target with his right - both leading and on the counter.

Collazo is firmly second best here but he’s also awkward, durable and not always easy to hit. He wants to make this a slow, war of attrition.

Pacheco definitely upping the work rate now...

Pacheco vs Collazo

Sunday 18 September 2022 00:25 , George Flood

It’s not thrilling by any means, but Pacheco is in control despite not landing too much of note so far.

The older and more experienced Collazo clearly wants to further reduce the tempo of this rather mundane contest to a snail’s pace and lands a nice enough right hand of his own.

Pacheco is going to the body well with the head out of reach, producing another strong right hand before the bell at the end of round three.

Pacheco vs Collazo

Sunday 18 September 2022 00:20 , George Flood

Pacheco’s skill is obvious as he feints to the body and then drives in a right hand that lands upstairs.

He’s the aggressor on the front foot, patiently probing and waiting for another opening to present itself.

Collazo, meanwhile, is content to be on the back foot and attempt to counter when possible.

Another stiff right hand finds the mark from Pacheco - trained by Jose Benavidez Sr - after a familiar slow period of tenative jabbing.

Not much action at all so far, but definitely 2-0 Pacheco.

Pacheco vs Collazo

Sunday 18 September 2022 00:17 , George Flood

A quiet opening round as both men focus on working the other out behind the jab.

Nothing substantial of note landed in the opening three minutes.

Tentative stuff early on, though Pacheco will surely want to start moving through the gears sooner rather than later.

This is a scheduled 10-rounder, by the way.

Pacheco vs Collazo

Sunday 18 September 2022 00:11 , George Flood

Pacheco is 15-0 and huge for a super-middleweight, standing at 6ft 4ins with enormous reach.

Tonight is a big step up for the 21-year-old, who is matched with Puerto Rico’s experienced London 2012 Olympian Collazo.

British fight fans may remember Pacheco from the Joshua-Ruiz II undercard in 2019, when he emphatically knocked out Selemani Saidi in the first round in Saudi Arabia.

Pacheco vs Collazo finishes early prelim bill

Sunday 18 September 2022 00:03 , George Flood

One more bout to come on tonight’s early prelim bill in Las Vegas.

It’s Diego Pacheco vs Enrique Collazo for the WBC USNBC silver super-middleweight title.

That’s a mouthful!
