Charlton beat London rivals QPR thanks to Joe Wollacott’s penalty save in their Carabao Cup first-round shootout.

Miles Leaburn created the first chance for the hosts after 10 minutes when he headed over a Sean Clare cross, while Niko Hamalainen blasted over the crossbar for QPR a minute later.

Charlton were on the front foot more in the second half. However, the first effort after the break fell to QPR as a low shot by Hamalainen forced Wollacott to clear.

Both teams made a number of changes on the hour but neither side showed enough quality until substitute Tyler Roberts marked his QPR debut in fine style. The on-loan striker from Leeds rifled home a superb strike from the edge of the area with 10 minutes left.

There was late drama, however, as Aaron Henry drilled home just before stoppage time to send the tie to penalties. Joe Wollacott made the vital save early on as the Addicks won 5-3 in the shootout at The Valley.

Elsewhere, three second-half goals enabled Portsmouth to avenge their defeat to Cardiff at the same stage five years ago as they progressed to the second-round with a 3-0 win in Wales.

League One Oxford shocked Championship outfit Swansea 5-3 on penalties after storming back from two goals down at half-time to force a 2-2 draw. Penalties were earned thanks to Cameron Brannagan's stoppage-time equaliser, but Swansea should have been out of sight after a dominant first half.

James Waite scored the late winner as League Two Newport upset side Luton, winning 3-2 at Kenilworth Road.

Mark Hughes was celebrating a Carabao Cup scalp as Bradford knocked out Championship visitors Hull 2-1 at Valley Parade. Andy Cook scored twice for the League Two side, who came from behind to record their first home win in the competition for eight years.

Reading lost 2-1 to Stevenage courtesy of a late Danny Rose strike while Barrow beat Blackpool and Stoke were dumped out by Morecambe, both on penalties after goalless draws. Wigan lost at Fleetwood to complete the tally of ten second-tier sides exiting the competition at this stage at the hands of lower opposition.

Leyton Orient and AFC Wimbledon were dispatched by Forest Green and Gillingham, respectively.
