Carlisle United’s Jack Robinson goes under the knife today.

The left-sided defender is undergoing surgery on his injured ankle.

Robinson suffered a stress fracture late in the campaign and after assessment by specialists, it was decided that an operation was needed.

It will see the former Middlesbrough man miss the start of next season as he faces a four-month recovery.

“Jack is having surgery [this] morning, and then he’s got around about four months to recover,” said manager Paul Simpson.

“Hopefully there'll be no setbacks on that, and we've just got to get him right.”

Robinson, 22, will spent the initial period of his recovery in a protective boot.

That is before he can begin his rehabilitation on the ankle.

“I think it's six weeks in a boot, so he won't be doing any physical work at all [for the moment], but he's obviously just got to manage his food and his drink intake to make sure that he keeps in a good physical state,” said Simpson.

Robinson and Callum Guy, who is on the way back from an ACL injury, will not be fit for the start of the season.

But all United’s other injured players are expected to be ready for pre-season.

“Jack Ellis is still in the gym trying to get his rehab done,” said Simpson of the young Cumbrian defender who has a hamstring injury.

“Taylor Charters and Josh Vela were signed off from their rehab [following respective hamstring and knee injuries] in the last week of the season, so I'm expecting them back in for pre-season training.

"So as far as I'm aware, it's Jack Robinson and Callum Guy who are the only ones who won't be fit to start [the season].”

Players who will be working on their rehab over the summer will see their work overseen by head physio Chris Brunskill until his departure from the club in June, along with assistant physio James Counsell, with head of performance Jake Simpson also on hand to monitor things.
