Paul Simpson says talks are ongoing over Billy Barr’s future at Carlisle United.

The manager wants coach Barr to remain part of his backroom team in 2024/25.

Barr was drafted in for the closing months of the season and Simpson was pleased with his impact.

He has confirmed he wants the 55-year-old to stay at the club.

And Simpson told the News & Star: “It's still being discussed at the moment – that’s ongoing.

“I'm hoping we can do it.

“Obviously everything's around what the administration decide on that and hopefully we'll be able to come to an agreement.”

Barr returned to Carlisle in February to work alongside manager Simpson, assistant boss Gavin Skelton and the rest of the backroom staff.

It saw a return to the first-team scene for the former United player after his previous role as assistant manager to Gary Bowyer at Dundee.

Barr has also coached at clubs such as Salford City and Blackburn Rovers in recent times.

Simpson was quick to declare that he was impressed with Barr’s input soon after he rejoined the Brunton Park club.

Speaking in March, the Blues boss said: “I've been really impressed with him. He’s grown as a coach, he's become more experienced, is becoming more vocal, and he’s showing fantastic knowledge as well.

“I’m really pleased with Billy, with what he’s brought us.”

It is hoped Barr’s retention will be one of three key appointments to the backroom staff this summer.

United are also seeking a new head physio, with Chris Brunskill set to leave the club.

And they are also set to bring in a goalkeeping coach to replace Dave Timmins, who has departed and rejoined his previous club Ayr United.

It is believed the Cumbrians are closing in on a preferred candidate for the keeper coach position, which will be their latest such appointment after the previous departure of Paul Gerrard last summer.
