Former Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas is reportedly plotting a move to bring Blues' wonderkid Alfie Gilchrist to Serie A next season.

The 20-year-old defender broke into the first team at Stamford Bridge in December last year around the same time Fabregas was appointed assistant manager of Como 1907. Gilchrist would make 17 appearances for the senior team and bagged himself a memorable goal in the 6-0 thrashing of Everton.

“I hope to keep ticking off these achievements," Gilchrist said post-match. "I feel I have taken my chance tonight. These games will only help me and I will keep improving when I keep testing myself against the best players. My family say keep going and believe in your ability.”

Then-manager Mauricio Pochettino spoke fondly of the youngster. He told reporters: "He’s an amazing guy in the way that he works, he is always available.

"He’s the type of player you want in the squad." It appears Fabregas has taken this recommendation on board according to The Athletic's report.

Gilchrist is reportedly a target for the newly promoted Serie A club as they aim to sure up their defence for the challenge of a higher division next season. However, Como are likely to have competition from clubs in England with Championship Preston North End also believed to hold an interest in the defender.

It is unclear at this stage with Gilchrist's preference would be to remain in England or not but it appears the defender will be allowed a loan move next season to gain more first team minutes. New manager Enzo Maresca has already purchased out-of-contract Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo this summer and with the likes of Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi being linked to Stamford Bridge, Gilchrist's opportunities in West London could be limited if he stays at Chelsea.
