Giorgi Chakvetadze shone as Georgia enjoyed the greatest night in their football history, stunning Cristiano Ronaldo and his Portugal teammates with a shock 2-0 victory to reach the knockout stages of Euro 2024.

The Watford attacking midfielder typified his nation’s fearless and fun approach, producing a high intensity display that mixed some purposeful attacking contributions while maintaining discipline as Portuguese had no answer to counter Georgia’s superb organisation out of possession.

The Georgians started the night ranked 68 places below their opponents in the FIFA rankings, but the Group F winners were stunned inside two minutes when star striker Khvicha Kvaratskhelia drilled a low shot past Diogo Costa.

That goal came when Georgia countered after winning back possession and that set the tone for much of what was to follow as the Portuguese became increasingly frustrated.

The crucial second goal arrived in the 57th minute when Georgia were awarded a penalty which Georges Mikautadze duly converted.

Chakvetadze was replaced with nine minutes of normal time remaining after a tireless performance which saw him have an opportunity to score a third when he fired over from the right side of the area as the match entered its final quarter.

The victory means Georgia finished third in Group F and the reward for the greatest result in their history is a last-16 showdown with Spain at 8pm on Sunday.
