Champions League draw LIVE! Redraw as Chelsea, Man United, Liverpool, PSG and more learn last-16 fate

Champions League last-16 draw - LIVE!

The initial draw for the last 16 of the Champions League took place again after a “technical problem” caused the initial one to be “declared void”.

Manchester United were initially drawn to face Villarreal but that was not possible because the two clubs had faced each other in the group stage.

That led to confusion which saw United’s ball incorrectly left out of the following draw, which could have seen them pitched against Atletico Madrid.

When the draw took place again, Chelsea drew Lille for a second time, avoiding potential ties against Bayern Munich or Real Madrid. Liverpool will face Inter Milan.

Man City have a favourable draw against Sporting to look forward to in February, while United, who drew PSG in the earlier draw, will face Atletico Madrid.

Real Madrid will feel the most hard done by. They were initially drawn against Benfica, but will now face PSG instead in what is set to be a thrilling tie.

It’s been quite the day...

Plenty of bang for your buck with this Champions League draw.

A Uefa software glitch meant Manchester United were incorrectly pulled out to face group rivals Villarreal in the scheduled draw, before being pitted against PSG.

Uefa eventually accepted they would have to redo the draw, which led to United landing a tie with Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid facing PSG.

All the while, Chelsea were drawn against Lille. Twice.

Recap the full draw here.

Spare a thought for PSG too, they’ve gone from Manchester United to the LaLiga leaders on a ten-game winning streak...

19:44 , Marc Mayo

Ahead of facing PSG, Real Madrid’s Butragueno adds: “That said, we approach this tie with real excitement, whilst being aware of what this competition means to the club and our fans.

“We're also aware of just what a tough opponents we face and the quality of players they have, but we're confident that the team will put in two great performances.

“I'm sure that the two games will be excellent spectacles for the game and fans and we hope to progress and take our place in the quarter-final draw.”

Real Madrid are unhappy...

19:33 , Marc Mayo

Emilio Butragueno, the Real Madrid director of institutional relations, has delivered his damning verdict on the day’s events.

He says: “Firstly, I must say that it’s surprising, shameful and very difficult to understand what's gone on today, given that millions of fans and the world of sport were following the draw.”

Liverpool are certainly a team to fear in the last-16

“Obviously Sanchez and Dzeko we know well – and Lautaro Martinez is one of the most exciting strikers in the world, probably. It’s a proper Champions League tie, so all good and I am absolutely looking forward to it.”

And on UEFA having to restart the draw...

“Definitely. I saw it live and I thought, ‘You cannot let it stand like this, there’s no chance.’ Definitely, they had to do it again.”

Jurgen Klopp on facing Inter Milan

15:02 , Matt Verri

“I had to wait 54 years to play at the San Siro for the first time… and now it’ll be twice in three months, so that’s good news! All good. Of course, it is a tough draw, definitely.

“They are the league leaders in Italy; a good team in a good moment. We will see how things go until we meet in February. Simone Inzaghi is there, his first year, last year they were champions, but it is the Liverpool way – it’s never easy, but still possible.”

The last-16 draw... for good this time

14:29 , Matt Verri

14:22 , Matt Verri

Real Madrid will be the club most annoyed by the redraw.

They were due to face Benfica, and that tie was drawn before the issues happened in the first attempt this morning. Real were pushing for the draw to restart from where the problems started to occur, so that their tie with Benfica would remain.

Now they have PSG to deal with instead.

14:20 , Matt Verri

So, the English teams won’t feel too hard done by.

Chelsea still face Lille, that has turned out incredibly well for them. It’s another favourable draw for City too - they face Sporting in the last-16.

Liverpool have been given a trickier tie, they will now have to get through a dangerous Inter Milan side. Man United face a stern test, up against Atletico Madrid... but they’ll take that over playing PSG!

PSG vs Real Madrid

14:15 , Matt Verri

Real Madrid drew Benfica earlier... they’ve now got PSG. Not sure that’s going to go down particularly well.

Inter Milan vs Liverpool

14:14 , Matt Verri

The Reds swept past AC Milan in the group stage, and they will be returning to Italy in February.

Villarreal vs Juventus

14:13 , Matt Verri

Atletico Madrid vs Manchester United

14:13 , Matt Verri

Slightly easier tie for Ralf Rangnick’s side, but still a difficult task in the last-16.

Chelsea vs Lille

14:12 , Matt Verri

It takes a long time for those on stage to get the go ahead to draw one of two balls. Eventually they do so... and Chelsea’s luck is really in!

After all that, they draw Lille again.

Benfica vs Ajax

14:11 , Matt Verri

Sporting vs Manchester City

14:09 , Matt Verri

Pep Guardiola’s side will be happy enough with that.

Salzburg vs Bayern Munich

14:08 , Matt Verri

Chelsea avoid the German champions once again!

14:07 , Matt Verri

UEFA officials going to check every decision the software makes this time, which could see the draw take a bit longer.

We’ve had a quick run through of the teams, and it looks like we’re ready to get underway right now!

14:06 , Matt Verri

Not exactly off to a flying start at the second time of asking.

We’re five minutes behind schedule... and we’re back!

“I apologise for the fact we have had to gather again.” Poor Giorgio Marchetti has had a busy day.

14:02 , Matt Verri

Off to Nyon once more. UEFA’s set designers have earned their money today... after switching everything for the Europa League and then the Europa Conference League draw, it’s back to the Champions League colours.

13:55 , Matt Verri

Five minutes to go until we have a second attempt at the Champions League last-16 draw.

Fingers crossed we don’t have to go through all the montages and chat again, and we can get straight on with the draw.

That’s probably very wishful thinking though...

13:51 , Matt Verri

Chelsea could be the team that comes out of this redraw the worst.

They were due to face Lille, having avoided the other potential options of Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Ajax. Could be a frustrating afternoon for the Blues.

Hopefully that it goes smoothly...

13:48 , Matt Verri

Pep Guardiola on the redraw

13:39 , Matt Verri

“I think it is fair. It was a mistake. Sometimes these things can happen. If there was a mistake you have to repeat so it is not suspicious.”

City boss might not be so diplomatic if his side get drawn against Atletico Madrid, for example, this time..

Who can Manchester City face?

13:36 , Giuseppe Muro

And it is Atletico Madrid, Sporting, Inter Milan, Benfica, Villarreal or Salzburg for City in the last 16.

Who can Manchester United face?

13:36 , Giuseppe Muro

It is PSG, Atletico Madrid, Sporting, Inter Milan, Benfica or Salzburg for United.

Who can Liverpool face?

13:35 , Giuseppe Muro

PSG, Sporting, Inter Milan, Benfica, Villarreal or Salzburg are the possible opponents for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Who can Chelsea face?

13:35 , Giuseppe Muro

Thomas Tuchel’s side have four potential opponents in the last-16 - Ajax, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich or Lille.

Pots in full

13:32 , Giuseppe Muro

Seeded teams: Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Ajax, Manchester City, Real Madrid, Juventus, Lille

Unseeded teams: Paris Saint-Germain, Sporting CP, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan, Chelsea, Benfica, RB Salzburg, Villarreal

Draw rules

13:32 , Giuseppe Muro

So, a reminder of the rules.

The group winners are seeded for the draw and will play at home in the second leg of their tie, with the group runners-up unseeded and at home first.

Teams from the same country or group cannot be drawn against each other at this stage of the competition.

13:27 , Giuseppe Muro

There was another technical issue with the software during the Europa Conference League draw, which forced that be delayed for a short while. Although it was quickly resolved and the draw continued to its conclusion.

Host Pedro Pinto ended by saying “take care and see you all soon”.

Yes, in just over 30 minutes for the Champions League re-draw…!

13:23 , Giuseppe Muro

After mistakes in the Champions League draw, UEFA official Giorgio Marchetti looks a bit shaken during the Europa Conference play-off round draw.

Not a good day for UEFA.

‘Manchester United will be delighted’

13:16 , Giuseppe Muro

Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves on BT Sport: "United will be delighted.

“Let's see what comes up. Some fans are going to be delighted but some will be very annoyed."

Real Madrid unhappy about draw mistake

13:14 , Giuseppe Muro

13:12 , Giuseppe Muro

Chelsea would have been very happy with the initial draw after coming out against Lille.

They could face daunting clashes against Bayern Munich, Real Madrid or Ajax in the re-draw.

And will be denied Cristiano Ronaldo vs Lionel Messi?

There will be a lot of controversy about all this and some clubs will be unhappy, but you have to think it is the right decision to hold a re-draw for the integrity of the competition.

13:00 , Giuseppe Muro

The draw will take place at 2pm UK time, following the conclusion of the Europa Conference League draw.

Champions League draw to be redone

12:45 , Giuseppe Muro

UEFA have confirmed ‘the draw has been declared void and will be entirely redone'. Wow.

Statement from UEFA: “Following a technical problem with the software of an external service provider that instructs the officials as to which teams are eligible to play each other, a material error occurred in the draw for the UEFA Champions League Round of 16.

“As a result of this, the draw has been declared void and will be entirely redone at 1500 CET.”

Atletico Madrid ask for 'explanations' from Uefa

12:41 , Giuseppe Muro

Atletico say they are in talks with UEFA “to ask for explanations and a solution”. This is getting interesting

12:32 , Giuseppe Muro

It sounds like a decision on a re-draw could come in the next hour...

12:23 , Giuseppe Muro

UEFA are now investigating the Manchester United ball mix-up.

A senior UEFA source has told the Mirror they are looking into the episode and whether the draw must be performed again to preserve the integrity of the competition.

11:52 , Matt Verri

Still no word on whether anything will change after that error from UEFA.

You’d imagine United would be quite keen to do whatever they can to avoid facing PSG in the last-16...

11:42 , Matt Verri

United were initially drawn to face Villarreal after an error in the draw. They couldn’t face the Spanish side in the last-16, as they were in the same group.

It sounds like United were then kept out of the pot for the next draw, against Atletico Madrid. That was a mistake, as Ralf Rangnick’s side would have been able to face Atletico. Bit of a mess from UEFA.

11:34 , Matt Verri

Cristiano Ronaldo vs Lionel Messi. Mauricio Pochettino in the Old Trafford dugout. Ralf Rangnick’s first knockout tie in charge at United.

Plenty to look forward to when PSG face Man United. First leg in Paris, before the return fixture at Old Trafford. Should be a thriller.

Some very exciting ties...

11:30 , Matt Verri

11:29 , Matt Verri

Chelsea had four possible opponents in the last-16. Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Ajax or Lille.

Bayern and Ajax both won all six of their matches in the group stage, while Real topped their group too and are eight points clear at the top of La Liga.

Lille secured top spot in their group in the final match, but they are 11th in Ligue 1 and a full 20 points behind PSG already. A good outcome for Thomas Tuchel’s side.

Who the Premier League clubs will face

11:24 , Matt Verri

Pep Guardiola’s side got a relatively friendly draw - they will face Villarreal in the last-16.

Chelsea and Liverpool will both be happy with the outcome too. The Blues face Lille, at Stamford Bridge in the first leg before travelling to France. For Liverpool, a two-legged tie against Salzburg which they will be huge favourites for.

It’s bad news for United though. PSG for them. They did beat them in the Champions League in Solskjaer’s first season in charge though...

PSG vs Manchester United

11:21 , Matt Verri

The draw has not been kind to Ralf Rangnick’s side. Pochettino will be in the Old Trafford dugout after all...

Chelsea vs Lille

11:21 , Matt Verri

The Joe Cole derby is on.

Sporting vs Juventus

11:20 , Matt Verri

Inter Milan vs Ajax

11:19 , Matt Verri

Salzburg vs Liverpool

11:18 , Matt Verri

Jurgen Klopp’s side will be happy enough with that draw.

Atletico Madrid vs Bayern Munich

11:17 , Matt Verri

Chelsea fans can breathe a sigh of relief... they will not be facing Bayern in the last-16!

Villarreal vs Manchester City

11:15 , Matt Verri

Benfica vs Real Madrid

11:14 , Matt Verri

11:13 , Matt Verri

Arshavin gives his memories of playing in the competition... scoring the winner against Barcelona at the Emirates the highlight.

Another explanation of how things work, and that is about it for the build-up. At last we are ready to start the draw.

IT’S TIME!

11:08 , Matt Verri

Giorgio Marchetti is on stage to explain how the draw works. A warm, familiar sight. He’s also giving us a brief history of the competition.

“I could go ahead for hours with the fantastic tales of the Champions League.”

It’s a worrying threat, but fortunately it looks like we might now be getting near to actually doing the draw. Marchetti welcomes Andrey Arshavin onto the stage... we are close now.

11:04 , Matt Verri

As ever with these draws, UEFA cannot be trusted to do things on time. Extensive montage on all 16 of the teams is delaying proceedings somewhat...

11:01 , Matt Verri

Over to Switzerland we go then, it’s time for the last-16 draw!

10:55 , Matt Verri

Five minutes to go until the draw is scheduled to get underway, and the English sides will find out who is waiting for them in the last-16 when the Champions League returns in February.

10:47 , Matt Verri

The final of this season’s Champions League will be played on Saturday May 28 in Saint Petersburg.

Sounds like former Arsenal man Andrey Arshavin, from the Russian city himself, may be involved in today’s draw. Here he is making the trophy look even bigger than usual...

No away goals rule

10:41 , Matt Verri

A reminder that UEFA made the change at the start of the season to get rid of the away goals rule for two-legged knockout ties.

It’s hoped it will lead to more entertaining matches, with home sides no longer fearful about conceding a goal that matters so much. We will see next year what difference it makes...

10:34 , Matt Verri

About 25 minutes until the draw gets underway, at 11am GMT.

Liverpool vs PSG, Man United vs Atletico Madrid, Chelsea vs Bayern Munich... these are all potential draws for the last-16.

How Man City qualified

10:29 , Matt Verri

It was a stumbling end to the group stage for City, losing 2-1 to RB Leipzig, but by that point top spot and qualification had already been secured.

That came after victory at home to PSG, avenging the defeat earlier in the competition in Paris. Having got to the final last season, Pep Guardiola and his side will be desperate to go one better and win the trophy for the first time in the club’s history.

Atletico Madrid, Sporting, Inter Milan, Benfica, Villarreal and Salzburg are who City could face in the last-16.

How Man United qualified

10:20 , Matt Verri

Six matches, three different managers... but United made it through relatively comfortably.

After a 2-1 defeat against Young Boys in the first match of the group stage, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had to rely on Cristiano Ronaldo to provide late winners against Villarreal and Atalanta.

Michael Carrick booked United’s place in the last-16 with victory away to Villarreal, before Ralf Rangnick got his first taste of European football at the club with a 0-0 draw against Young Boys with qualification already secured.

It’s PSG, Atletico Madrid, Sporting, Inter Milan, Benfica or Salzburg in the knockout stages for United.

How Chelsea qualified

10:12 , Matt Verri

A disappointing final match of the group stage saw Chelsea draw 3-3 away to Zenit, and it means they missed out on the chance to progress as winners.

The Blues had put themselves in pole position after dismantling Juventus 4-0 at Stamford Bridge but that slip-up in Russia has made things more difficult.

Thomas Tuchel’s side have four potential opponents in the last-16 - Ajax, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich or Lille. They will hope they are back up to top form by the time the Champions League returns in February.

 (AP)
(AP)

How Liverpool qualified

10:04 , Matt Verri

Things could not have gone any better for Jurgen Klopp and his side in the group stage.

Drawn against Atletico Madrid, AC Milan and Porto, Liverpool played six and won six as they cruised through to the last-16. Ajax and Bayern Munich were the only other sides to go through with 18 points.

Entertaining 3-2 wins at home to Milan and then away to Atletico were as stressful as proceedings got for the Reds, and they will be a feared team in the knockout stages.

PSG, Sporting, Inter Milan, Benfica, Villarreal or Salzburg are the possible opponents.
