Champions League draw: Manchester United face Barcelona in quarter-finals

Manchester United have drawn Barcelona in a mouth-watering Champions League quarter-final, as caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer aims to write more European history with the club.

United overcame Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16 thanks to a stirring comeback in the French capital, winning the second leg 3-1 having lost 2-0 at Old Trafford.

It is 20 years since Solskjaer scored the winner on the club’s most famous night, and the caretaker manager will now return to the scene – the Nou Camp – as he tries to add another chapter to that history.

Barcelona knocked out Lyon this week, crushing the French side 5-1 at home in the second leg as Lionel Messi produced an outstanding performance.

Messi gave a stirring speech at the beginning of the season in front of a packed Nou Camp, promising that the team would do everything in their power to bring the Champions League back to Barca.

Messi scored in both Champions League finals when the two clubs met in 2009 in Rome and again at Wembley in 2011, the last time they met competitively.

The semi-final route was also drawn in Nyon. The winner of United’s meeting with Barcelona will play either Liverpool or Porto for a place in the final on 1 June in Atletico Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano stadium.

The first leg of each tie will be played on the 9 or 10 of April, before the return leg the following week.

United will play the first leg of their quarter-final at Old Trafford after UEFA swapped the ties to avoid a clash with Manchester City's game with Spurs.
