Charlie Mulgrew has landed his first coaching role at Hamilton after missing out on a return to Celtic.

The former Scotland defender retired last year and was in the running for a youth role at Parkhead working with the under-18s. However, it's understood ex-Hoops star Jonny Hayes will take up the position after knocking back the chance to stay at Aberdeen.

Celts have restricted their youth department in recent months, with B team coach Darren O'Dea being promoted into a new position as Professional Pathway Manager. Under-18 manager Stuart McLaren also left at the end of last year and Mulgrew and Hayes were both in contention for the vacancy. But it's believed Treble-winner Hayes - who hung up his boots in May - will soon be appointed.

However, it was announced today that ex-Celtic and Aberdeen star Mulgrew has been confirmed as the new coach of Hamilton Accies' Elite Youth Academy. Mulgrew, 38, replaces Sean Crighton who departed the club yesterday.

A club statement read: "Hamilton Academical FC is thrilled to welcome Charlie Mulgrew to the club, where he will play a crucial role in nurturing and developing the next generation of talented young footballers within the Under 18’s Elite Youth Academy. His guidance and mentorship are expected to inspire, motivate, and elevate the players to reach their full potential, both on and off the pitch.

"The club’s decision to appoint Charlie Mulgrew underscores its dedication to investing in the future and fostering a strong pathway for young players to progress within the footballing world. With Mulgrew’s leadership and expertise, Hamilton Academical FC aims to continue its tradition of producing top-quality players and empowering the next generation of football stars."
