Celtic Fan View: Charly Musonda has the potential to bring joy to the Celtic faithful

Celtic’s media team had a lot of fun announcing the signing of Charly Musonda earlier this week. The Belgian joins the Bhoys on an 18-month loan deal from Chelsea and if the enthusiasm from his interviews translates on to the pitch, he’ll be a big hit with the Hoops faithful.

Celtic’s official Twitter account called this a “Special signing.” Musonda responded by saying “Special club, special number,” and revealed he’d wear the iconic number 67 jersey.

Even Real Betis’ Twitter account got in on the fun. “Great Lad! He always looks good in Green and White! Send him a big hug from us.”

They remember the 21-year-old fondly in the south of Spain and if anyone followed Musonda’s performances during his stint in La Liga, they’ll realise the club have a very promising player on their hands for the next 18 months.

This young lad has a lot of charisma, he can beat players for fun and importantly he’s willing to learn. Musonda’s end product could be better, however. Just one goal in 16 appearances in the second half of the 2015/16 campaign for Real Betis suggests that he still needs to polish up on his delivery and technique in front of goal. In this Celtic side- with the help of Brendan Rodgers- he’ll constantly find himself in the opposition area which should take his output to another level.

It’s not just exciting to have Musonda at Parkhead on an individual level but also what he can bring to the collective. The four wingers Celtic now have at their disposal are: Scott SInclair, James Forrest, Patrick Roberts and, of course, Musonda. Good luck to any defence who have to deal with those four running at them.

Celtic have the ability to run riot against many sides with two of these four plus plenty of quality in reserve if they require something different. The variation in each player’s skill set also gives the champions more flexibility to drag opposition sides out in different ways. We got a glimpse of that as Musonda made his bow against Hearts on Tuesday.

From a personal standpoint, the prospect of witnessing Musonda on one flank and Roberts on the opposite side is a mouthwatering combination. The duo will provide mega entertainment for fans with their classy dribbling ability, pace and the gaps they can spot with their excellent vision and passing ability. When you also throw the likes of Tom Rogic into the equation, the playmaking potential is unreal.

Musonda’s positivity stood out from his comments during his unveiling. “I’m very lucky to be here and very happy to be here,” he said. “I’m really excited, I can’t wait for it. I’ve heard so many good things about the stadium and the fans so it’s going to be unreal to play at Celtic Park.”

He added: “The fans can expect to see a player who enjoys football, who is not afraid to show his quality, a bit of flair as well I like to enjoy myself on the pitch and hopefully I can do it for the team.” The smile on Musonda’s face was as wide as goalposts on Monday. Expect him to put a smile on the faces of many a fan in the next year and a half.
