Cheeky burgers! Accrington Stanley owner hits back after EFL probe undisclosed McDonalds win bonuses
Every footballer likes to win, every footballer likes it even more when handed extra incentives to do so.
But Accrington Stanley have fallen foul of the EFL with their less-than-common tradition of a post-victory McDonalds "or the like".
Club owner Andy Holt took to Twitter to voice his complaints after EFL queried his Big Mac bonus as it is not outlined in the players' contracts.
"I'm relaxed about it," Holt wrote on Twitter. "Should put an expenses claim in, but I'd have to pay the bill either way."
Then I receive a letter from @EFL demanding an explanation because the @McDonaldsUK is not specified in the players contracts.
You have to wonder what these folk would do with their life if it wasn’t for my errors of judgement.— Andyh (@AndyhHolt) April 1, 2018
Responding to a tweet, Holt wrote: "It's my money John, not the club's. I spend it how I want, been known to give a free bar to our fans for 10 minutes too on the odd occasion."
"I don't for one minute think anything untoward in my actions," he added. "At least the EFL keep an eye on my twitter feed."
EFL regulation 61.6 states that "full details of all payments to or benefits paid in cash or in kind on behalf of players must be included in the standard contract", while any bonus must "form part of the contract" and confirmed before the beginning of the season.
Accrington Stanley sit top of League Two with 24 wins under their belt, before facing Notts County on Easter Monday. So the odd Quarter Pounder and McFlurry don't appear to be hurting their promotion push.
