Cheekiest penalty or lucky mistake for French football player?
Brisbane Roar player Eric Bautheac has ignited the internet with his penalty against Adelaide in Austalia’s A-League.
The Frenchman scored a penalty, but football fans around the world aren’t sure whether he meant it or not.
Bautheac ran up to the ball, but instead of a powerful strike, he rolled the ball along the ground, fooling keeper Paul Izzo who could do nothing as the ball rolled past him.
However fans are asking whether instead of it being a clever piece of deception, Bautheac was actually attempting a Panenka penalty.
🤔Not sure if this is audacious from former Saint-Etienne, Lille, Nice & Evian player Eric Bautheac or just a totally fluffed Panenka? https://t.co/nuaNOOqNfC

Forget Panenka. It's 2019. 'Bauthéac penalty' = a penalty in football where the ball is gently rolled into the goal after the hapless keeper has dived to one side. https://t.co/sXheV0CuNn

This is an attempted Panenka which doesn't come off, but does... I think https://t.co/L6H5qhk5mH

A traditional Panenka is usually chipped into the back of the net, rather than dribbled straight along the ground.
Either way it’s being hailed as the “cheekiest penalty ever”, but whether any player will be brave enough to try it again is another question.
