Chelsea travel to the Etihad Stadium this Sunday with the seemingly impossible task of delaying Manchester City’s inevitable Premier League title triumph.

Arsenal were the latest side to suffer at the hands of City, suffering back-to-back 3-0 defeats in the space of five days, and Chelsea must now prepare themselves for what could be a similar experience, should Antonio Conte’s men not perform at their highest level.

Pep Guardiola’s side achieved a narrow 1-0 win against the Blues in September of last year but with five wins needed to secure the title, City will be looking to put their rivals to the sword.

The hosts will be without Fernandinho and Raheem Sterling through injury while David Luiz and Tiémoué Bakayoko have been ruled out for Chelsea.

Key battle

Kevin de Bruyne v Eden Hazard

Kevin de Bruyne and Eden Hazard will link up this summer as key figures in Belgium’s 2018 World Cup bid. But their international allegiances will be temporarily forgotten on Sunday. Here, we assess the key battle.

De Bruyne is currently the odds-on favourite to be voted PFA Player of the Year, a prize won three seasons ago by Hazard, the only previous Belgian to win the award.

De Bruyne is just seven assists away from breaking the all-time Premier League record of 20 in a season, set in 2002-03 by Thierry Henry. On average, the 26-year-old is creating a chance for his team-mates every 28 minutes, so realistically this target is achievable.

Meanwhile, Hazard has only managed three Premier League assists this season, but has been in excellent goalscoring form recently, with six goals in his last eight appearances in all competitions for the Blues, including four goals in Chelsea’s four Premier League away games so far in 2018.

This season has seen the 27-year-old score once every 154 minutes – by far the best ratio in any of his six Premier League campaigns. His shots per 90 minute average is also at a personal high, and he has maintained his impressive 21 per cent conversion rate of last season.

Hazard has rightly been recognised for his contribution to Chelsea, but De Bruyne has become every bit as instrumental to Manchester City. Who will get the bragging rights on Sunday?

Who to pick

When a player hits form you have to pick them otherwise you can miss the chance to capitalise on an avalanche of points. Willian is currently the most in-form player for the Blues right now, scoring heavily. If Chelsea are to grab a shock win on Sunday, you would imagine that Willian will play an instrumental.

The Blues – naturally with the form City are in – head into Sunday’s game as major underdogs. But any Chelsea fan will tell you that the Blues are at their most dangerous when the football world has ruled them out.

With the Londoners desperately in need of points to secure a Champions League spot, don’t be surprised to see Chelsea grab at least a point and don’t be surprised to see Willian make the score-sheet.

Who to avoid

Alvaro Morata must be more clinical to succeed at Chelsea, says Andriy Shevchenko.

Alvaro Morata is well and truly the man to avoid this weekend. Without a goal since Boxing Day, having struggled with a back injury and poor form, it is no surprise to see the Spaniard on the avoid list.

Chelsea fans are rightfully beginning to lose patience with Costa’s replacement, bemoaning the strikers lack of strength, aggression and ruthlessness.

There is already a feeling that Morata looks like a man ready to give in, with the Premier League clearly proving a challenge for the 25-year-old. Against the best team in the league, I can’t see Sunday being the day Morata has a turn-around in fortune. He may not even make the pitch.

Who to watch

Thibaut Courtois is considered one of the best goalkeepers in the world and is currently second in the race for the golden glove.

Having recently criticised manager Antonio Conte in public – for substituting Eden Hazard against Manchester United – whilst continuing to flirt with Real Madrid and PSG in the press, it will be interesting to see what performance the Belgium international puts in.

Keep your eyes on this guy.
