Chelsea FC 0-1 Arsenal LIVE! Premier League result, match stream and latest updates today

Chelsea vs Arsenal LIVE!

Gabriel's second-half goal was enough to keep Arsenal top of the Premier League with a 1-0 win at Chelsea on Sunday that further underlined the Gunners' title credentials.

The Brazilian centre-back was on hand to steer in a corner from Bukayo Saka in the 63rd minute at Stamford Bridge following a largely dominant performance by the visitors against a toothless Chelsea side.

The win lifts Arsenal back atop the standings, two points ahead of Manchester City, which had taken the overnight lead with a last-gasp win against Fulham on Saturday. It also sends an even stronger message to City that Arsenal is likely to be their main challenger for the title this season after adding this result to previous victories against Liverpool and Tottenham.

For Chelsea, though, it was another disappointing performance that will add to pressure on manager Graham Potter, especially coming off a 4-1 loss at his former club Brighton last week.

Dismal Aubameyang display sums up Chelsea’s woe

14:59 , Marc Mayo

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s dismal display in Chelsea’s 1-0 home defeat to Arsenal summed up his side’s troubles.

The 33-year-old was jeered and booed by the away end with his every touch in an anonymous display.

The striker had just eight touches of the ball to highlight not only his lack of impact but the dominance of Mikel Arteta’s league leaders at Stamford Bridge.

Saliba wins Aubameyang battle to stop Chelsea striker haunting Arsenal

14:49 , Marc Mayo

All the talk before this game was about how Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could return to haunt Arsenal, but William Saliba put pay to that.

Much has been made about Aubameyang since his summer move to Chelsea, which came just months after he had left Arsenal for Barcelona.

A promo video for BT Sport ahead of this derby at Stamford Bridge only stoked the flames and, when Aubameyang was named in the starting XI, you could sense what may follow.

Instead, though, it was Saliba who shone brightest on a dark and rainy lunchtime at Stamford Bridge, underlining just how impressive he has been since returning to Arsenal this summer.

Graham Potter to BT Sport

14:29 , Marc Mayo

“We played against a team in a really good moment, they boys gave everything. A huffing and puffing performance without the quality we need.

“You have to look at where the two teams are at, they’ve been playing together a long time. We’re in a different phase.”

Chelsea player ratings

14:21 , Marc Mayo

“He produced a great last-ditch block on his international teammate Gabriel Jesus after Loftus-Cheek lost possession in the 20th minute. One of the few bright sparks on Sunday afternoon.”

Nizaar dished out a few poor scores for Chelsea’s players today, with Thiago Silva one to earn some praise.

Mikel Arteta gives his reaction

14:17 , Marc Mayo

“For such a young team, the maturity, composure and resilience they showed was phenomenal. Winning in this stadium against this opponent is another step for this team, to keep believing they can do it under pressure and against big opponents.”

90+5 mins: Arsenal return to the top of the table!

13:52 , Marc Mayo

90+4 mins: Now it’s Holding on for Martinelli. No Chelsea push coming as of yet...

13:49 , Marc Mayo

90+2 mins: It’s all extremely flat at Stamford Bridge, bar a pocket of 3,000 or so fans in the far corner wearing red.

The Gunners simply keep winning fouls and holding onto the ball as the clock ticks down. But first Xhaka and Chalobah have a little to-do after the ball was kept in the corner.

13:48 , Marc Mayo

90 mins: Five minutes added on but Arsenal have the ball.

13:47 , Marc Mayo

89 mins: Xhaka picks Gallagher’s pocket to shut down a Chelsea attack and Arsenal immediately win a free kick off Sterling, who takes a booking.

13:45 , Marc Mayo

87 mins: Arteta replaces Odegaard with Elneny to protect his lead.

13:42 , Marc Mayo

85 mins: Arsenal attacking with real pace when given the chance, Odegaard linking up with Jesus who picks out a wayward chip for Saka. Goal kick.

Moments later, Gallagher takes the sixth yellow card of the afternoon.

13:40 , Marc Mayo

82 mins: We might finally be seeing Chelsea drive towards a leveller as the rain lashes down in west London.

Arsenal hold firm from a pair of dangerous crosses.

13:37 , Marc Mayo

80 mins: White booked for time wasting and Arsenal want a penalty as Cucurella looks to have handled it, when the free kick finally comes in.

VAR will have a look...

No penalty, it’s probably a handball but the arm was just outside the box - so they can’t change the decision.

13:36 , Marc Mayo

77 mins: Zinchenko slips to allow Azipilicueta a run forward, yet he overhits his cross under pressure from Gabriel and skies his cross. A good recovery from the defender when he looked beat.

Tierney replaces Zinchenko for Arsenal.

Mount and Loftus-Cheek come off for Pulisic and Kovacic as Potter shuffles his pack.

CHANCES!

13:33 , Marc Mayo

74 mins: Better from Chelsea as Broja hits the byline and pulls a cross back, only for Xhaka to clear.

Forward come the visitors and Jesus finds Odegaard, who has to cut inside and flies a shot over the bar.

Penny for Aubameyang’s thoughts?

13:29 , Marc Mayo

13:28 , Marc Mayo

70 mins: Nothing in the way of a reply from Chelsea so far, Saka testing Mendy off his line but unable to go around the goalkeeper.

Some frustrated groans are starting to circulate around the stands.

(Getty Images)

CHANCE ARSENAL!

13:25 , Marc Mayo

67 mins: A ball in reaches Saka, who goes on his weaker foot against Cucurella and fires over on the angle.

A second would surely kill this game...

13:23 , Marc Mayo

65 mins: Potter goes straight to his bench, as he was planning anyway.

Broja and Gallagher replace Aubameyang and Havertz - the away end barely noticing their former hero’s exit.

GGGOGOOOOOAAAALLLL!!! Chelsea 0-1 Arsenal | Gabriel

13:20 , Marc Mayo

63 mins: THE GUNNERS LEAD!

Saka’s corner goes all the way through the crowd and probably would have gone in... but for Gabriel’s touch on the goalline!

CHANCE ARSENAL!

13:20 , Marc Mayo

62 mins: Jesus nicks in on Silva and races towards goal, firing off a shot that Mendy is more than equal to.

13:18 , Marc Mayo

60 mins: Chalobah has to take a booking after Cucurella’s weak header was stolen by Jesus, leading to the defender sending his man to the ground.

Potter is turning to his bench...

Nizaar Kinsella at Stamford Bridge

13:16 , Marc Mayo

The game was just stopped for a medical emergency in the Matthew Harding stand in the lower tier.

Arsenal’s doctor was involved talking to paramedics via a radio device as the fan was attended to but the match has restarted after a three or four minute stoppage.

13:15 , Marc Mayo

57 mins: The game has been paused due to an incident in the crowd.

And, after a minute or so, we’re back underway.

CHANCE ARSENAL!

13:13 , Marc Mayo

56 mins: A short corner is worked well and Partey pops up to flick a header with barely enough contact... and he takes it off Martinelli’s head in the process!

That could have been 1-0.

13:13 , Marc Mayo

54 mins: Mendy punches well to clear a dangerous looking Jesus cross from the left, a good move by the Brazilian to peel away and finally add a bit of width to Arsenal’s attacks.

Nizaar Kinsella at Stamford Bridge

13:11 , Marc Mayo

This London derby is incredibly stop-start due to Michael Oliver’s insistence on giving every foul. It feels like it is stopping either team really getting going.

13:08 , Marc Mayo

50 mins: Booking for Azpilicueta after going for a bouncing ball and catching Martinelli as he won the tackle.

Not entirely sure how that’s a foul at all, given the Arsenal man arrived late and missed the ball.

CHANCE CHELSEA!

13:07 , Marc Mayo

49 mins: A poor Gabriel header is followed up by a curious Zinchenko diversion across his own box, the ball eventually falling to Aubameyang whose shot is well blocked.

Arsenal contend with consecutive corners.

13:05 , Marc Mayo

47 mins: Arsenal back out on the front foot, Silva clearing an Odegaard set piece behind his own goal.

Saka takes over for the corner and that’s a poor one, Aubameyang nodding clear before Havertz’s handball ends any chance of a counter-attack.

Kick-off!

13:03 , Marc Mayo

Let’s see if we can get a goal or two in the second period at the Bridge.

No changes from either manager.

A look at the table...

13:00 , Marc Mayo

A point would do little for either side, Arsenal only able to go top with a win.

Chelsea would stay sixth, two points off Newcastle in fourth and one behind Manchester United - both of those teams kicking off in an hour’s time.

First-half highlights

12:57 , Marc Mayo

Truly the best (of few) openings we had in that opening 45 minutes.

Stats watch

12:53 , Marc Mayo

Arsenal lead seven to three on shots before the Blues have managed the only shot on target so far.

It’s 62 to 38 in possession percentage to the visitors, Chelsea conceding 17 fouls to 10.

Half time!

12:48 , Marc Mayo

It’s 0-0 between Chelsea and Arsenal at the break.

The Gunners have perhaps edged a stop-start, slightly scrappy affair in west London.

12:47 , Marc Mayo

45 mins: We’ll have one minute of added time as Jorginho tracks back superbly to win the ball off Saka and earn a throw.

12:43 , Marc Mayo

41 mins: Mount breaks into the box only to be undone by failing to fully control the ball in full sprint.

Arsenal come back forward and both managers end up angry with the officials - Arsenal denied a foul by Cucurella on Saka before the Spaniard is chopped by Saka to bring out a booking for the winger.

Simon Collings at Stamford Bridge

12:41 , Marc Mayo

Arsenal’s half summed up by them just missing that final pass. Lots of nice build-up play, but they can’t quite cut Chelsea open. Thiago Silva has been superb.

 (Chelsea FC via Getty Images)
(Chelsea FC via Getty Images)

12:40 , Marc Mayo

38 mins: All just a bit scrappy as Arsenal struggle to break through a tight, packed Chelsea midfield in a diamond shape helped out by Sterling dropping back to defend.

But the Blues are unable to put any long spells of pressure together themselves.

12:37 , Marc Mayo

35 mins: Arsenal will take a corner after Xhaka’s dragged shot hits a defender, after a long and steady piece of build-up play.

Saka’s in-swinger lands is cleared from a dangerous spot and his second attempt drifts into touch.

12:34 , Marc Mayo

32 mins: Silva gets up well as he battles Partey at a corner, but his leap is a little too early and he gets under it, heading over.

Nizaar Kinsella at Stamford Bridge

12:33 , Marc Mayo

Even mild mannered Graham Potter is getting frustrated with referee Michael Oliver giving Arsenal so many free-kicks as the Blues try to compete with the top of the table side.

CHANCE ARSENAL!

12:30 , Marc Mayo

29 mins: The Gunners break very nicely and Martinelli’s fine cross is met by Jesus’ diving header... wide!

That has to go in, just not enough of a connection from the Brazilian.

12:29 , Marc Mayo

27 mins: No surprise we have our first booking of the day already and it’s Aubameyang, arriving late in typical striker’s challenge fashion on White.

Arteta was furious on the touchline after that, and the away end’s chants are, shall we say, not of the nature that we can publish!

12:27 , Marc Mayo

26 mins: Arsenal deal with a swell of Chelsea deliveries into the box. Saliba, Gabriel and Partey look to have plenty on their counterparts in fighting for high balls today.

12:25 , Marc Mayo

23 mins: A sixth foul conceded by Chelsea in under 22 minutes of play as Mount chops his man by Arsenal’s corner flag.

It was originally a decent attack for the home team, until an unfortunate Havertz slip right in front of the away end brought about a loud, ironic cheer.

CHANCE ARSENAL!

12:22 , Marc Mayo

21 mins: A beautiful run from Jesus jinks him past Chalobah and Silva holds his nerve to block the shot.

Forward come Chelsea and Mount hits a long-range attempt into the crowd before the visitors win a foul.

Simon Collings at Stamford Bridge

12:21 , Marc Mayo

Arsenal will be pretty happy with this start. They controlling a lot of the game and overloading the midfield. They need to make this dominance count though, Chelsea look good on the counter.

12:20 , Marc Mayo

18 mins: A third shot of the game all of which have been from Arsenal, comes from Martinelli as he cuts inside and curls one harmlessly over.

Chelsea give the ball away from the goal kick - just 40 per-cent possession for the hosts so far.

No harm done, mind, as Zinchenko fluffs an inexplicable foul throw. He has been away for a few weeks, after all!

12:17 , Marc Mayo

15 mins: A few too many free-kicks being conceded by Chelsea in their own half, keeping the pressure on themselves as Cucurella becomes the latest to dive in and foul Jesus.

The delivery flicks off Havertz onto Saliba’s arm, for a goal kick.

CLOSE!

12:12 , Marc Mayo

11 mins: White pops up again after fine work by Jesus, the defender coming much closer this time albeit with a scuffed strike to the far post that is almost tapped home at the back stick.

A promising start for Arsenal.

 (REUTERS)
(REUTERS)

12:10 , Marc Mayo

10 mins: Chelsea’s best move of the match comes through a Havertz underlap on Sterling, he opts for a high cross to the far post... while Aubameyang had gone for a cutback to the near.

Nizaar Kinsella at Stamford Bridge

12:09 , Marc Mayo

Loud boos for Pierre Emerick Aubameyang every time he touches the ball from Arsenal’s away end. It’s clear they side with Mikel Arteta in the spat and don’t like his decision to join Chelsea.

12:09 , Marc Mayo

7 mins: Pretty much all Arsenal so far, their press causing Chelsea issues on the ball and the hosts are a little too clumsy when chasing down their opponents.

Chalobah heads a free kick clear to White, who lashes a hopeful volley over.

Simon Collings at Stamford Bridge

12:07 , Marc Mayo

Zinchenko looks like he hasn’t been away, so sharp in the opening few minutes.

12:06 , Marc Mayo

4 mins: A slightly harsh foul on Cucurella as he goes shoulder-to-shoulder with Saka in the final third hands Arsenal another chance to load the box.

And Cucurella spots the cheeky lay-off to nick the ball back from the set-piece, winning a foul off Martinelli.

12:03 , Marc Mayo

2 mins: Arsenal come forward quickly to earn a long throw-in opportunity for Partey, which Gabriel flicks wide at the near post.

Looks like a back four for the hosts, Cucurella at left-back and a three-man midfield. Havertz is slightly deeper than Aubameyang and Sterling up top.

The usual 4-3-3 for Arsenal too, with Odegaard just ahead of Xhaka and Partey.

A bold call from Arteta today to throw Zinchenko straight back in. I guess it underlines just how important he is to the way Arsenal play, but also says something about Tierney’s standing. He was excellent on Thursday.

Graham Potter unapologetic over tactical trials

11:49 , Marc Mayo

In the week, Graham Potter spoke of his willingness to try new things to improve his Chelsea team - even if that means looking an “idiot”.

He said: “I think you have to remember, when you are trying to do something new, there will be a chance it goes wrong. You always have to be prepared for that.

“That sounds a bit strange because you should come across as this all-knowing person with all the answers, but the reality of making progress and the reality of doing something different and new is... you have to be prepared to be an idiot.

“If it goes wrong or it fails, you are open to criticism. The flip side of that is that if you don’t do anything and you just do the same stuff then nothing changes.”

A strong line-up for Arsenal

11:18 , Marc Mayo

Arguably, Mikel Arteta’s first-choice XI today with Oleksandr Zinchenko back from injury and beating Kieran Tierney to the left-back spot.

Otherwise it is exactly as you would expect from Arsenal with Takehiro Tomiyasu out.

A very interesting Chelsea line-up

11:12 , Marc Mayo

We have Mason Mount partnering Jorginho in central midfield by the looks of it, flanked by Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Marc Cucurella.

Cesar Azpilicueta is favoured in central defence to Kalidou Koulibaly and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang gets his start up front.

It could be a 3-4-3 or a 4-3-3 with three changes from midweek.

The Arsenal line-up today

11:05 , Marc Mayo

Arsenal XI: Ramsdale; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Zinchenko; Odegaard, Partey, Xhaka; Saka, Jesus, Martinelli.

Subs: Turner, Tierney, Holding, Cedric, Lokonga, Elneny, Vieira, Nketiah, Nelson.

How the hosts line up

11:02 , Marc Mayo

Chelsea XI: Mendy; Azpilicueta, Silva, Chalobah; Loftus-Cheek, Mount, Jorginho, Cucurella; Havertz, Aubameyang, Sterling.

Subs: Bettinelli, Koulibaly, Hall, Gallagher, Kovacic, Zakaria, Pulisic, Ziyech, Broja.

Potter urged to start Sterling on the wing

10:54 , Marc Mayo

Former Chelsea and Arsenal defender William Gallas has told Graham Potter what to do with Raheem Sterling ahead of today’s game.

“If Potter wants to get the best from Sterling, he has to play on the right or left of a three, that’s how Sterling was being used at a high level before at Liverpool and Manchester City,” he told Genting Casino in the week.

“He’s always played there. So for me it is difficult to understand why, sometimes, a manager wants to play players out of position.

“After the Zagreb win, I think Potter has to play Sterling in a front three and not how he used him in the last match when he was playing wing-back.”

We’re about to find out...
