Chelsea carry an away-goal advantage back to Stamford Bridge ater earning a 1-1 draw at Real Madrid in the first leg of their Uefa Champions League semi-final.

Christian Pulisic gave Chelsea a deserved lead in Spain - but just as Thomas Tuchel’s threatened to overrun Real, Karim Benzema volleyed home to level on the night for Zinedine Zidane’s men.

Chelsea player ratings

Edouard Mendy 6

Could do nothing to stop Benzema’s goal when unsighted and beaten from close range. Barely troubled other than that.

Andreas Christensen 7

Such a calm and mature presence. Even against this level of opposition maintained his concentration throughout.

Thiago Silva 8

Cool and composed on the ball. Spotted danger early to cover his fellow defenders. Particularly impressive in the second half with important interceptions.

Toni Rudiger 7

Could not believe the room he was given to flight a ball over to Pulisic from the halfway line as Chelsea took the lead.

Cesar Azpilicueta 6

Allowed himself to get caught under the ball when losing out to Casemiro at the far post in the build-up to Benzema’s goal. Battled throughout to limit Real’s threat.

N’Golo Kante 8

Loose pass almost cost Chelsea early – but it was back to business as usual as he covered so much space to snuff out danger. Kept driving forward right up to the final moments.

Jorginho 7

Crucial early interception saved Kante’s blushes and cut out a dangerous Real attack. Played through Real’s midfield with ease at times.

Ben Chilwell 7

Bravely got very high up the pitch to keep the pressure on. Got himself into dangerous positions and worked hard tracking back.

Mason Mount 7

Put in a shift helping Chelsea win the ball in dangerous positions. Runs on the break also a problem for Real.

Timo Werner 6

His tame finish from six yards summed up his season. Not even his goal against West Ham at the weekend could lift his confidence, which looks shot.

Christian Pulisic 8

Wonderful solo goal. Found so much room to exploit on the break and worked back tirelessly to win the ball in high positions. Took punishment as Real identified him a key threat.

Substitutes

Hakim Ziyech (Pulisic, 66) 6

Gave Chelsea much-needed energy after coming on and a different threat.

Kai Havertz (Werner, 66) 5

Held the ball up well, but did not get into enough dangerous areas.

Reece James (Azpilicueta, 66) 5

His pace worried Real – forcing them to check their own ambition on his side.
