Chelsea FC 0-0 Liverpool LIVE! FA Cup final result, match stream and latest updates today

Chelsea vs Liverpool LIVE!

Alisson Becker and Kostas Tsimikas were the spot-kick heroes as Liverpool secured a 6-5 penalty shoot-out triumph against Chelsea to win the FA Cup and keep their quest for an unprecedent quadruple alive.

Just 76 days after the Reds edged past Thomas Tuchel’s men on penalties following a scoreless Carabao Cup final, Wembley witnessed another gripping clash between these sides that went down to the wire.

Nothing could split them after 90 minutes and extra time again, despite Luis Diaz going close on several occasions. Marcos Alonso was denied by the bar for Chelsea, while Andy Roberson missed a couple of big chances for Liverpool.

Edouard Mendy prevented Sadio Mane striking the winner after Cesar Azpilicueta had hit the post, only for Alisson to keep Mason Mount’s penalty out. That set the stage for Kostas Tsimikas, who made no mistake to send his teammates and Jurgen Klopp charging up the pitch to celebrate with him.

Chelsea come up short again

21:05 , Matt Verri

In their 60th game and fourth final of the season, Chelsea suffered FA Cup heartbreak for the third year in succession.

It took 14 penalties to separate them and Liverpool, whose quadruple chase remains alive.

This will be a particularly bitter pill for Thomas Tuchel to swallow as, once again, Jurgen Klopp could not find a way past him in 90 minutes or extra time – but still walks away victorious.

This game was a near-carbon copy of February’s Carabao Cup Final. Another goalless draw that should have yielded numerous goals. Another elongated shoot-out.

Hamstrings the problem...

20:42 , Matt Verri

Thomas Tuchel has confirmed Kai Havertz missed out with a hamstring injury, having been unable to train yesterday.

Similar problem for Timo Werner, who felt a problem with his hamstring in the warm-up ahead of kick-off. Chelsea decided not to risk the German.

Chelsea player ratings

20:31 , Matt Verri

Mateo Kovacic 7

Such a big-game mentality player and that was needed, particularly in the first half, when Liverpool were on top. Constantly showed for the ball and won possession at key times. Remarkable he lasted more than an hour with an ankle injury.

Jorginho 7

Played a huge part in wrestling Chelsea back into the game. His calm head was crucial to keeping his teammates focused in the eye of the storm.

Marcos Alonso 8

Could have had a hat-trick. Really troubled Liverpool by playing so high up. Forced one save, hit the bar and put another chance just wide.

Roberto Firmino already turning his attention to the Champions League final!

Two weeks today, Liverpool face Real Madrid in Paris, looking for revenge after the 3-1 defeat to the Spanish side in 2018.

Promises to be an incredible encounter.

Liverpool didn’t have a single shot in extra-time, with both sides looking incredibly tired.

Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk forced off, Andy Robertson replaced late on - playing the maximum amount of games is maybe catching up with Liverpool.

Just three to go though - history still there to be made.

Shuffle has had plenty of practice

‘Mentality monsters’ at it again

20:14 , Matt Verri

Jurgen Klopp has hailed his side’s character as they once again stepped up on the biggest stage to keep their quadruple dream alive.

“Outstanding, it was an incredible, intense game against Chelsea – they would have deserved it exactly the same way, like in the Carabao Cup. That’s how small the margins are,” Klopp said.

“I couldn’t be more proud of my boys, the shift they put in, how hard they fought, the early changes. All of these things, missing good chances, overcoming good moments from Chelsea, then having really good moments ourselves.

“Then in the penalty shootout, it was nerve-racking, my nails are gone but I really feel for Chelsea. For the second time, 120 minutes and you get nothing, that’s too hard. But for us I’m pretty happy.

“We are mentality monsters but there were mentality monsters in blue as well – it was one penalty. Chelsea played outstanding but in the end there must be one winner and that was us today.”

Alisson on that Mount save

20:09 , Matt Verri

“It was good, hey? The goalkeeping coaches, they help me with the decisions. They are fantastic players, Chelsea did really well but we deserved to win this. I only made the save because we deserved to win this.

“This gives us more confidence in the Premier League and also the Champions League final. It’s a fantastic moment, now we just need to enjoy it.”

Alisson reacts to shootout triumph...

20:05 , Matt Verri

“It’s amazing, such a good performance. It was a shame we didn’t score.

“It was a proper fight, we kept a clean sheet, and then afterwards the boys were unbelievable scoring the goals. I just had to save the last one.

“I am so happy. Myself and also Mendy made amazing saves. I couldn’t have made the saves without the help of the team. They work well and make it easier for me.”

Van Dijk gives update on injury...

19:59 , Matt Verri

“We’re going to check it out. I felt in the first half when I sprinted, I felt a twinge behind my knee, I played on.

“In the end, I can’t risk it for the team and I need to trust Joel. Hopefully it will be fine.”

Not too shabby...

Klopp and Milner lead the way, with Henderson the last man up.

Liverpool captain will be making his way along the line though - quite a huddle to get through.

Huge cheers as Henderson lifts the FA Cup - another sensational chapter for Liverpool this season.

19:50 , Matt Verri

Very few Chelsea fans left to see their side make the trip up the Wembley stairs, as you’d expect.

Liverpool now starting their journey - will be a slightly warmer reception for them.

19:46 , Matt Verri

Klopp has punched the air about 100 times now, with the Liverpool fans sent wild by each one.

Chelsea players on their way up to receive their medals.

19:43 , Matt Verri

Heartbreak for Chelsea, who become the first team ever to lose three consecutive FA Cup finals.

Shootout will be taking place in front of the Chelsea fans.

Huge roar goes up from that end as the referee points to them.

Luis Diaz is the FA Cup final man of the match. Certainly deserved.

Tuchel giving a final few words of encouragement to Mendy ahead of the shootout.

Penalties it is!

Two cup finals between these sides this season, 240 minutes, no goals.

19:17 , Matt Verri

120 mins: One minuted added on.

Penalties are almost here. No sign of Kepa...

19:16 , Matt Verri

119 mins: Another Chelsea sub - Loftus-Cheek is coming off after barely more than ten minutes of not getting a touch! What?!

Barkley on to replace him. Bizarre.

James Robson at Wembley

19:14 , Matt Verri

The Loftus-Cheek experiment is not working. The quality of service has not been good enough - and he hasn’t shown anything like the pace to successfully chase down anything that isn’t in to feet.

Remarkable Werner hasn’t come on.

19:13 , Matt Verri

117 mins: James with a needless foul and Liverpool have the chance to bring Matip and Konate forward.

Too much on it though, and Matip then sends it behind for a goal-kick as he slides in on Rudiger. Silva down with cramp for Chelsea.

19:12 , Matt Verri

115 mins: Mount with a clever flicks through to Loftus-Cheek, he wasn’t expecting it though.

Five minutes for someone to be a hero!

19:10 , Matt Verri

113 mins: Loftus-Cheek still waiting to see the ball for the first time since coming on at striker.

Still no sign of Werner coming on... interesting call from Tuchel. Will we see Kepa come on if this goes to penalties?

Need to get there first - Chelsea get in behind and clip a decent cross into the box, a combination of Alexander-Arnold and Milner deals with it.

19:07 , Matt Verri

110 mins: Both sets of players looking tired now - been a high tempo to this match throughout.

Will there be one more big chance for either side to win it? You’d imagine so.

Robertson off for Liverpool, with Tsimikas coming on.

19:04 , Matt Verri

107 mins: Henderson has been quietly impressive in the Fabinho role, mopping up the danger when needed.

Loftus-Cheek is playing straight through the middle for Chelsea - centre-forward for this final period of extra-time!

15 minutes to go...

19:01 , Matt Verri

Two changes from Chelsea. Pulisic and Chalobah off, Loftus-Cheek and Azpilicueta on.

We’re underway again!

James Robson at Wembley

18:59 , Matt Verri

It’s peculiar that Tuchel has left Pulisic on for so long. He has been really threatening, but he looks exhausted now.Surely Werner has to come on soon?

HT: Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

18:58 , Matt Verri

105 minutes gone. 15 to go. Maybe a penalty shootout at the end of it too.

This FA Cup final is going down to the wire!

18:56 , Matt Verri

103 mins: Alonso whips it into the near post, Silva there with the flick on. Too much on it and it’s harmlessly over the bar.

Still these sides cancel each other out!

18:55 , Matt Verri

102 mins: Free-kick Chelsea, dangerous position for Ziyech to put something into the box.

Pulisic very nearly gets across his man at the near post. Flicks off Matip and behind for a Chelsea corner.

James Robson at Wembley

18:53 , Matt Verri

Without Van Dijk, it does feel like an opportunity for Chelsea to really run at Liverpool. It must be a boost to players like Ziyech and Pulisic when they see such a dominant figure go off.

18:52 , Matt Verri

99 mins: Firmino is indeed coming off, replacing Diaz. Chelsea will be absolutely thrilled to see Diaz coming off, he was brilliant.

Mount has space 20 yards out and fires an effort at goal. High and wide. Apart from that...

18:50 , Matt Verri

97 mins: Referee has let plenty go all match and he does so again, as Diaz thinks he’s been fouled by Rudiger.

Firmino getting some final instructions from Klopp, looks like he will be coming on very shortly.

18:48 , Matt Verri

95 mins: Superb from Kante. One-on-one with Diaz as Liverpool counter, he wins the tackle and stops Diaz in his tracks.

Nobody in a Chelsea shirt has been able to do that today.

Chelsea then break themselves, played low into Ziyech who goes down in the box under pressure from Konate. No penalty.

18:47 , Matt Verri

94 mins: Pulisic in behind the high Liverpool line and Chelsea are away.

Heavy touch from Pulisic though, allowing Matip to get across and clear it out for a corner. Chelsea forward had to play the ball in earlier.

18:45 , Matt Verri

92 mins: Chelsea seeing all of the ball since the restart, having got through that Liverpool storm late in normal time.

That is until Silva looks for the long ball out to Alonso and sends it straight out of play.

Back underway!

18:43 , Matt Verri

We’re off in extra-time at Wembley.

18:42 , Matt Verri

Big chance from Liverpool - Van Dijk off!

Must be an injury you feel, can’t imagine Klopp would be keen to bring him off otherwise. Matip on to replace him.

Robertson unable to convert...

18:39 , Matt Verri

FT: Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

18:38 , Matt Verri

Once again it’s goalless after 90 minutes between these two sides at Wembley!

Diaz could have scored about six, Robertson missed two chances... it’s still level though. 30 more minutes to come!

18:37 , Matt Verri

90+2 mins: Chelsea don’t deal with an Alexander-Arnold cross, Diaz keeps it in and Mendy has work to do. He does it, just about.

Then goes down with cramp, which Silva and James are there to help with. Liverpool fans in fine voice as we head towards extra-time.

18:35 , Matt Verri

90+1 mins: Three minutes added on.

Lost count of how many times Diaz could, and maybe should, have scored today. He cuts inside of Silva, curls a shot around the Brazilian but it’s just wide of the far post. Mendy at full stretch.

18:34 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Crucial defending from Alexander-Arnold - had to deal with a bouncing ball otherwise Mount would have been clean through on goal.

Chelsea have offered almost nothing going forward in the latter stages of the match, taken all they have just to stay in it.

18:33 , Matt Verri

88 mins: Alexander-Arnold clips a free-kick into the box, Van Dijk gets on the end of it at the back post but can only loop it behind for a goal-kick.

Diaz then roars past Chalobah once more, cuts it back into the box. Perfect positioning from Silva to intercept.

18:30 , Matt Verri

86 mins: Lukaku’s match is over, Ziyech on to replace him.

Tuchel will be very satisfied if this goes to extra-time, the way these last few minutes have gone. Chelsea holding on, just about.

18:29 , Matt Verri

85 mins: POST SAVES CHELSEA AGAIN!

These are really dangerous moments for Tuchel’s side. Milner with a brilliant cross into the six-yard box, Robertson gets on the end of it but hammers his effort off the post from a matter of yards.

It’s a massive chance.

18:28 , Matt Verri

83 mins: How has he not scored yet?!

Diaz continues to run Chelsea ragged but he hasn’t had his reward. Mane plays it in to his teammate, who fires at goal from a tight angle. Flicks off the outside of the post and behind.

18:25 , Matt Verri

81 mins: Liverpool fans less than impressed as Jota goes down on the edge of the box and the referee doesn’t give the free-kick.

Chelsea break, Lukaku tries to find Pulisic who has made the run but Van Dijk is there once again to clear the danger.

18:24 , Matt Verri

79 mins: Thiago up, after receiving some treatment. Robertson and Alexander-Arnold standing over the free-kick.

It’s the left-back to clip it in, cleared away. Milner is the last man back for Liverpool and he absolutely boots it out of play - there was not about to be a counter-attack on his watch.

18:22 , Matt Verri

77 mins: Late challenge from James on Thiago and that will be a yellow card for the Chelsea man.

Came after Liverpool made a real mess of a counter-attacking - Alexander-Arnold had to play the ball wide to Henderson who was completely free. Klopp furious with him.

James Robson at Wembley

18:19 , Matt Verri

The game is on a knife edge - and it could now be a case of which team is prepared to take the bigger risk.

There have been really good chances for both sides.

You wonder if it could be time to unleash Werner or Ziyech to run at tiring legs.

18:19 , Matt Verri

74 mins: Second sub of the match for Liverpool - Keita off, Milner on.

Origi and Firmino both still waiting in reserve for the Reds, should they be required.

18:17 , Matt Verri

72 mins: Diaz with another threatening run in behind, not quite enough on the pass though. Mendy rushes off his line and boots it away.

Getting into ‘first goal wins it’ territory...

18:14 , Matt Verri

69 mins: If anyone deserves a goal, it’s Diaz. Liverpool’s best player by a margin.

Uses Roberton’s overlapping run as a decoy, shifts the ball inside and whips an effort towards the far corner. Just flies over.

18:13 , Matt Verri

68 mins: Alonso continues to see plenty of the ball, and he plays it on to Mount who has made a run to the byline.

Cut-back comes all the way through to James, he plays it to Pulisic and he fired wide. Looked to whip it low at the near post, not enough curl on it though.

James Robson at Wembley

18:11 , Matt Verri

Kante on for Chelsea, replacing Kovacic, who has been excellent. It will give Chelsea another burst of energy in what has been a really draining match, physically.

18:10 , Matt Verri

66 mins: Tuchel turns to his bench - Kovacic off, Kante on. Not a bad substitution to have...

Impressive display from Kovacic, considering how unlikely it was that he would be fit at all.

18:09 , Matt Verri

65 mins: Pressure building on Chelsea, who are struggling to get out for the first time this half.

Keita plays it wide to Alexander-Arnold, low cross into the box is blocked. Chelsea make a mess of clearing it before Kovacic hacks the ball away.

Liverpool swiftly back on the attack, Keita sends a tame shot straight at Mendy.

18:07 , Matt Verri

62 mins: Robertson puts a dangerous cross into the six-yard box... a couple of Chelsea defenders leave it before Alonso heads behind. Corner Liverpool.

Thiago rolls it to Alexander-Arnold, who sends a cross way over everyone. Routine that needs a bit more work.

18:05 , Matt Verri

60 mins: Jota has had a couple of good chances since coming on, he can’t make the most of them though.

This time Keita plays the pass into him, he goes for the early shot but it’s dragged wide of the far post. Mendy looked fairly confident with it.

18:02 , Matt Verri

58 mins: Really good defending from James, got his body in the way as Diaz looked to dart in behind.

Mount and Kovacic with the one-two as Chelsea look to break... too much on the pass and Liverpool regain possession.

18:00 , Matt Verri

56 mins: James with a great ball in, Alonso on the slide at the back post but he can’t reach it.

Tuchel urges the Chelsea fans to make some more noise and they respond. Been a brilliant ten minutes from their side.

17:59 , Matt Verri

55 mins: Alonso is getting joy on the left, mainly due to the space Alexander-Arnold leaves behind when he bombs forward.

Another decent cross swung into the box, Van Dijk gives Lukaku a shove and the ball runs through to Alisson.

17:57 , Matt Verri

52 mins: It’s been a brilliant start to this second-half.

Diaz picks it up and works the ball onto his right foot just outside the box. Goes for goal, drags it just wide of the far post. Mendy wasn’t getting there.

17:56 , Matt Verri

51 mins: Sensational cross from Alexander-Arnold, finds Robertson free at the back post but he makes a complete mess of the header.

Ended up bouncing off his thigh and rolls behind. Big, big chance.

James Robson at Wembley

17:55 , Matt Verri

Chelsea have started the second half like Liverpool did in the first - and they will be wondering how the scores are still level. It is crucial they take advantage of this period.

17:53 , Matt Verri

48 mins: NOW THEY HIT THE BAR!

It’s all Chelsea. Free-kick out wide, Alonso swings it in and it very nearly creeps into the far corner. Hammers back off the bar. Whatever Tuchel told them at half-time, it’s working.

17:51 , Matt Verri

47 mins: NEARLY A CHELSEA GOAL SECONDS AFTER THE BREAK!

Mount is offside so he lets the ball go and Pulisic gets on the end of his pass. Great cross, Alexander-Arnold caught under it and Alonso brings it down... just wide!

Pulisic then free inside the box, saved by Alisson. What a start from Chelsea.

Back underway!

17:49 , Matt Verri

We’re off and running again.

17:49 , Matt Verri

Players back out for the second-half.

Will we finally get a goal between these sides at Wembley this season?

Liverpool should have taken the lead...

17:44 , Matt Verri

17:40 , Matt Verri

Liverpool with 60% possession in that first-half - nine shots but just one on target to show for it.

Three shots for Chelsea, with Alonso’s effort from close range the only one to force Alisson into any work. They’ve got into some really good positions, but Chelsea haven’t been clinical enough.

HT: Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

17:34 , Matt Verri

Goalless at the break at Wembley.

Liverpool were by far the better team in the opening 15 minutes, pinning Chelsea back as Diaz caused them all sorts of problems.

But Tuchel’s side have grown into it and could well have taken the lead themselves, with Pulisic and Alonso unable to take decent chances.

17:31 , Matt Verri

45+1 mins: Pulisic and Jorginho combine nicely, ball played through to Lukaku.

He goes for the early shot this time, with Van Dijk coming across to cover. Blazed over the bar.

17:30 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Kovacic loses it on the halfway line and Mane is onto him in a flash - Chelsea man tries to haul him down but doesn’t even pull that off.

Eventually worked wide to Robertson, he swings a low cross in and Jota sends it over the bar from close range.

Four minutes added on.

17:28 , Matt Verri

43 mins: That’s one for the ‘ambitious’ folder.

Konate brings the ball forward, must be at least 35 yards out but decides to try his luck. Just about stayed in the first tier of Chelsea fans behind that goal.

Almost 165 minutes these sides have played at Wembley now this season - no goals.

17:26 , Matt Verri

41 mins: Van Dijk plays a short pass to Thiago, who wasn’t expecting it at all and Mount can pounce.

He drives forward and slides it through to Lukaku. Can’t get the ball out of his feet in time to get the shot away, tries to scoop it back across the face of goal but nobody there.

17:23 , Matt Verri

39 mins: Tempo of the match has gone up a level, as both sides appeal for free-kicks and are told to play on.

Pulisic does well to hold off Alexander-Arnold and Chelsea can go on the attack. Long ball forward from Jorginho towards Lukaku, who tries to pin Van Dijk in the box. Optimistic. Doesn’t work.

17:21 , Matt Verri

36 mins: Alexander-Arnold pops up in the middle of the pitch, goes for goal from miles out. Straight into Chalobah.

Van Dijk clips a long ball forward, this time both James and Chalobah are there to close down Diaz and win it back for Chelsea.
