Chelsea beat Southampton 4-3 on penalties to progress into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

In what was a pulsating affair at Stamford Bridge, many of Thomas Tuchel’s rotational options failed to make their case for the starting XI on a weekly basis.

Indeed, only Kai Havertz (who scored their goal with a header on the stroke of half-time), Kepa Arrizabalaga and Trevoh Chalobah (who has emerged as a genuine first-team option anyway) looked impressive, although a case could be made for Callum Hudson-Odoi.

Che Adams leveled three minutes into the second-half and it was largely the away side who had the better of it towards the end in SW6, with Kepa pulling off two stunning saves in the final minute to keep his side in it.

Reece James scored the winning spot-kick after teammate Mason Mount had missed.

Tuche’s post-match reaction to Chelsea’s penalty shoot-out win

23:02 , Jonathan Gorrie

“We had some last-minute changes because three potential starters got injured in training so it was not planned like this and not so many options form the bench. We knew it was the first time we played together like this and things would be tough against a team who put so much pressure on you like Southampton and that was the way it was.

“It was a nice match of football, good performances by both teams and a tough match but in the end we win with a penalty shoot-out. It was deserved, we fought hard for our chances and it was not easy.

“We got a bit unprecisie in the last pass and had many chances, many chances on the transition because they play one on one all over the pitch and any time we won the duel we had a lot of opportunities to create chances but we were a bit too sloppy with our passing and lacked a bit of composure.

“We deserve to create better chances and then suddenly we concede. It is a cup game and they have nothing to lose but we fought back.”

Having beaten Aston Villa here on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the third-round, Chelsea repeated the trick tonight. It’s fair to say Tuchel’s fringe players, notably Barkley, Ziyech and Saul, did not do enough to convince him they deserve more minutes in the League but Havertz’s confidence seems to be returning, which is a timely boost.

We go to penalties after some superb late drama at the Bridge. Kepa twice saved Chelsea’s skin with smart stops in injury time, while Sarr also tested Forster. Which goalkeeper will be the hero in the shootout?

Full-time: Chelsea 1-1 Southampton

21:37 , Jonathan Gorrie

94:00 - A penalty shoot-out awaits.

21:35 , Jonathan Gorrie

92:00 - Kepa keeps the home side in with two great saves.

Both ‘keepers have been brilliant tonight.

21:33 , Jonathan Gorrie

89:00 - Four minutes added on if Chelsea want to avoid penalties again.

No one playing for penalties

21:28 , Jonathan Gorrie

86:00 - It’s hard to rule out a winner here.

Neither team is playing for penalties in what is a pulsating affair in SW6.

Gentle applause around Stamford Bridge as former academy Tino Livramento is Saints’s fifth sub. I wouldn’t rule out a winner for either side, although Chelsea the more likely in the final 10 minutes or so.

Tino back in town

21:24 , Jonathan Gorrie

80:00 - Tino Livramento - who Chelsea allowed to leave earlier this summer - is now on the pitch.

He couldn’t, could he?

21:21 , Jonathan Gorrie

78:00 - Great save from Kepa to deny Will Smallbone what would have been an emotional goal after being out for 10 months with a knee injury.

Dan Kilpatrick at Stamford Bridge

21:17 , Jonathan Gorrie

It’s finely poised here, although Chelsea look the more likely winners, particularly after the introduction of Mount and Chilwell. The latter is playing out of position at right wing-back while Mount is at No.10.

21:16 , Jonathan Gorrie

73:00 - Saul’s difficult night continues as his guided shot from just outside the box goes wide.

Walcott down

21:11 , Jonathan Gorrie

67:00 - Theo Walcott, who has just come on, goes down in the box after being caught by Marcos Alonso.

The Spaniard had already been fouled, however, meaning there’s no penalty claim to answer.

Enter Mason Mount

21:06 , Jonathan Gorrie

65:00 - Die-hard Portsmouth fan Mason Mount is coming on, alongside the strangely prolific Ben Chilwell.

It’s the Fraser Forster show

21:01 , Jonathan Gorrie

60:00 - It could be 2014 all over again with Fraser Forster proving unbeatable between the posts since the goal.

Big save!

20:59 , Jonathan Gorrie

58:00 - Fraser Forster, who has been excellent tonight, tips a Reece James free-kick over the bar.

Dan Kilpatrick at Stamford Bridge

20:57 , Jonathan Gorrie

It’s breathless, end to end football at Stamford Bridge, with both sides seemingly having thrown caution to the wind at half-time. It’s good fun but you wonder if Tuchel is tempted to introduce Mount and Jorginho to try to restore calm.

CHANCE! Ross Barkley is almost in

20:57 , Jonathan Gorrie

54:00 - Forster robs Barkley of the ball off his toes after the former Everton man is played in by Callum Hudson-Odoi.

Let’s get our breath back

20:55 , Jonathan Gorrie

53:00 - What a start to the second-half!

Southampton are really pressing now and have gone close again through Adam Armstrong, forcing a good save from Kepa.

HT, 1-0: Havertz showed a different side to his game with a clinical header to put Chelsea ahead just before the interval. The German is auditioning to replace Lukaku for the next few weeks and he is delivering here.

‘Tensions on the touchline as Tuchel exchanges heated words with a member of Saints’ backroom staff in rapid German. In started when a member of Hasenhuttl’s team complained about something to the fourth official, frustrating the Chelsea boss.’ - Dan Kilpatrick

Chelsea sloppy again

20:25 , Jonathan Gorrie

37:00 - Armstrong picks up the ball from midfield and a loose pass sets him away.

Had the Saints star’s final ball been better, Chelsea could have been in trouble.

Need to start to focus.

Dan Kilpatrick at Stamford Bridge

20:22 , Jonathan Gorrie

A scrappy game isn’t all going Chelsea’s way with Saints more than holding their own. Havertz, who is auditioning for a potentially extended run at No.9, has been Chelsea’s biggest threat with two fierce efforts.

SAVE! Kepa called into action

20:20 , Jonathan Gorrie

35:00 - Kepa called into action with a save from Adam Armstrong.

Kepa in action

Elusive Havertz growing into role

20:15 , Jonathan Gorrie

30:00 - While it’s important to remember Havertz scored the winner in the Champions League final, you’d be hard hard-pressed to suggest he’s yet the finished article through the middle.

Still, he’s operating well there tonight - as he did against Norwich - and is finding pockets of space to break into very well.

Things getting better for Chelsea

20:12 , Jonathan Gorrie

26:00 - Chelsea improving.

Forster is forced into another good save after a brilliant team move set Havertz on the charge to have an effort from just outside the box.

Dan Kilpatrick at Stamford Bridge

“Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, you’ll never win that,” sing the Saints supporters after another Chelsea song about being European champions. Lovely banter.

Sloppy Chelsea play

20:08 , Jonathan Gorrie

23:00 - Chelsea are starting to lose the ball in midfield.

Granted, it’s not their first choice but a worrying pattern is emerging as we approach the 25-minute mark.

Away fans in good voice

20:06 , Jonathan Gorrie

20:00 - The Carabao Cup gets a bad rep at times.

The Southampton fans in their droves are helping a good atmosphere at the Bridge under the floodlights in what has been a pretty entertaining game so far.

CHANCE! Havertz goes just wide

20:02 , Jonathan Gorrie

16:00 - Havertz goes just wide with a curling shot after an impressive solo run.

Making a play for the starting centre-forward spot in the absence of some big names!

Saul looking lively

20:00 , Jonathan Gorrie

15:00 - It’s not been easy for Saul since his loan from Atletico but the Spaniard is seeing a lot of the ball and getting into good areas.

Could be a big night for him.

A closer look at the Fraser Forster save

19:57 , Jonathan Gorrie

Dan Kilpatrick at Stamford Bridge

19:56 , Jonathan Gorrie

Saul is aiming to kickstart his Chelsea career tonight and the Spaniard near had liftoff there with a header from 12 yards which was well saved by Forster. Chelsea are on top against a Southampton side who have opted to match the Blues for shape by switching to a back three.

19:52 , Jonathan Gorrie

06:00 - Saul goes close to his first Chelsea goal but sees Fraser Forster tip his header away.

Hudson-Odoi’s role

19:50 , Jonathan Gorrie

04:00 - Hudson-Odoi does appear to be operating at wing-back which, given the relatively low status of the Carabao Cup, would suggest that’s where Tuchel seems him long-term, rather than merely deploying him there as a makeshift option.

19:47 , Jonathan Gorrie

0:00 - We’re underway at Stamford Bridge...

Big night for Barkley

19:08 , Jonathan Gorrie

Ross Barkley, a relative outcast under Tuchel, proved impressive in the league meeting between the two clubs and perhaps the England international can make a case to start more regularly with a good performance.

Tuesday’s game represents yet another chance for Tuchel to demonstrate his frightening squad depth, having watched his side put seven past Norwich despite not having a recognised striker available.

Early Chelsea team news

18:00 , Jonathan Gorrie

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Thomas Tuchel has admitted changes are ‘very likely’.

“Everybody can put their heads together and make decisions because we have to admit we have the late game on Wednesday and the early game on Saturday and now another one on Tuesday.

“So it is very likely we have some changes. At the moment I am happy that everyone who plays, plays with the same style and intensity.

“How many changes I do not know.”
