Frank Lampard has finally revealed the real reason he was shown the door by Chelsea.

The club’s all-time leading goalscorer won every major trophy and was adored by the club’s fans during a glittering 13-year spell at Stamford Bridge.

He remains an idol to many at the west London outfit and remains a regular visitor to the ground as a supporter and in his capacity as a pundit for BT Sport.

However, Lampard’s exit was abrupt as mystery surrounded whether he would be offered a new contract and he left without being afforded the same fanfare as other Chelsea legends.

John Terry was saluted by the crowd with a large organised display of flags on his farewell and Didier Drogba was hoisted aloft by his team-mates after his last appearance.

None of that fanfare was arranged for Lampard before he jetted off to New York City FC and then headed back to the Premier League for a brief stint at Manchester City on loan.

The former midfielder has now claimed Chelsea’s pursuit of Cesc Fabregas in the same summer saw him cast aside amid fears their fiery relationship couldn’t be contained within the changing room.

Lampard and Fabregas clashed several times during the Spaniard’s spells with bitter rivals Arsenal and LaLiga giants Barcelona, giving Blues chiefs a decision to make over personnel at the Bridge.

Lampard, quizzed about his relationship with Fabregas, told BT Sport: “We never played together! They let me go to get Cesc in.

“Me and Cesc never really got on well on the pitch so they didn’t think we could share a dressing room.”

Fabregas has impressed in Chelsea’s midfield in recent weeks after a series of dazzling displays that have seen him link up well with Alvaro Morata and Eden Hazard.

Lampard scored 211 goals for Chelsea and is only one of five players, including former skipper Terry, to have played more than 500 fixtures for the Premier League champions.
