Chelsea will be kicking themselves after let Euro 2024 star Jamal Musiala join Bayern Munich for peanuts.

Musiala, 21, was nurtured by TSV Lehnerz, Southampton and Chelsea in his youth, before a changing Stamford Bridge setup let the attacking midfielder head to Munich for just £170,000 back in July 2019. While it is claimed that the Blues will receive a reported 20 per cent sell-on clause for Musiala, it will be a fraction of the star man's estimated £100million value (according to transfermarkt) should he leave the Allianz Arena any time soon.

Despite being crowded by an abundance of talent in Munich's midfield in the form of Leon Goretzka and Thomas Muller, Musiala set the Bundesliga alight across the 2023/24 season - bagging 12 goals and eight assists for his club across all competitions. And his formidable form seems to have carried over into this summer's tournament too.

The youngster scored in Germany's 5-1 dismantling of Scotland in their opening game of the competition, before doubling his tally thus far with a goal against Hungary in his nation's 2-0 victory on Wednesday. And while Chelsea could be bitter to see their former prospect developing and taking the tournament by storm, it is reported that they didn't actually want to let him leave in the first place.

The proverbial 'one that got away' from Chelsea, Musiala felt that Bavaria would present a cleaver developmental path than England would. It is understood that the player was actually offered a new contract in west London but chose to depart. And it's not the first time that Chelsea have allowed an exciting player to slip through their grasp either.

Kevin De Bruyne put pen to paper with Chelsea at the age of 20, signing from Genk in 2012 for around £7million - linking up with Belgium team-mates Romelu Lukaku and Thibaut Courtois. He would spend his first season away from Stamford Bridge, joining Werder Bremen on loan develop further as a player.

And upon his return, De Bruyne would only make nine appearances in total for Jose Mourinho's side, before being carted off to Wolfsburg in 2014 for around £18million. Just a season and a half for the side - where he scored 20 goals and set 37 up - was enough to spark the interest of Manchester City, who brought the Belgian to the Etihad Stadium for a then club record of £54million.

In his time with City so far, the stalwart has achieved six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, five League Cups, an FA Community Shield and a coveted Champions League trophy - with no signs of slowing down just yet.

The tough choice to leave Chelsea wouldn't be the only decision Musiala would have to make between England and Germany, tasked with the dilemma of which country to represent on the world stage, having being born to a German-Polish mother and a Nigerian-British father.

In an interview with German sports programme Sportschau, he admitted: "I have a heart for Germany and a heart for England, both hearts will continue to beat - I’ve thought a lot about this question. In the end, I listened to my feelings saying it’s the right decision to play for Germany. But it wasn’t an easy decision for me. I had a very good and honest discussion with [former Germany head coach] Joachim Low. He showed me a clear route into the national team.

"Mr Low had clearly worked out and analysed my strengths and weaknesses. He also sees my future in my strongest position of attacking midfield and appreciates my qualities there."
