Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana has sent a message ahead of his return from a long-term injury.

The Frenchman failed to play a single minute of football last season after suffering a rupture to his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) last summer. The injury came after he missed games through injury in the previous season after completing a £80 million move from Leicester City in the summer of 2022.

The absences mean that he’s made just 20 appearances for Chelsea in his two years at the club. But Fofana’s latest message suggests that he could be back in time for the new season.

On his Instagram page, Fofana has changed his profile to a simple two-word message reading: “I’m back.” In recent weeks he has also shared updates on work that he has been doing during the off-season .

Speaking back in May, former Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino was hopeful that Fofana would be back in training for pre-season. The Argentine has since left the club and has been replaced by former Leicester manager Enzo Maresca.

Fofana’s potential return will come as a big boost to the new head coach, with the Italian using the upcoming pre-season to assess his squad ahead of his first season in charge. Fofana was seen as one of the biggest defensive talents in the Premier League when he moved to Chelsea. He will be keen to show his new manager what he can do and will be hoping for an injury-free season.

Fofana will join Tosin Adarabioyo, Levi Colwill, Axel Disasi, Benoit Badiashile, Trevoh Chalobah, Alfie Gilchrist, and Malang Sarr as central defensive options next season. There is however doubt over the future of Chalobah, Sarr, and Gilchrist who could all leave the club this summer.
