Chelsea vs Liverpool - LIVE!

The post-Graham Potter era at Stamford Bridge began with a 0-0 draw as Chelsea and Liverpool again proved unable to break the deadlock in what was a low-quality encounter.

It finished goalless between these two sides at Anfield earlier in the season, as it did in both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup finals after 120 minutes a year ago, and once more the scoresheet was untroubled in Chelsea’s first match since the managerial change. On early evidence, Bruno Saltor in interim charge will not result in a significant upturn in form.

Reece James and Kai Havertz both had goals ruled out, with the Blues much the better side for the majorty of the encounter, but that will be little consolation as they remain 11th in the Premier League. The draw is also a further dent to Liverpool’s top-four ambitions, as their struggles continue too.

Ray of light for Chelsea

Real Madrid and Carlo Ancelotti will have watched N’Golo Kante’s return with concern, with the midfielder expected to start at the Santiago Bernabeu next week in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final tie.

Real will remember the Frenchman picking up the man-of-the-match award in both legs of the 2021 semi-final when Chelsea shocked Europe to win the competition and save a bad season.

Kante gives a glimmer of hope that this campaign isn’t yet over, despite the league table continuing to look bleak.

Sums it up...

A lot of wasted chances, a wasted chance to drag Liverpool further into mid-table alongside Chelsea.

FT: Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

21:55 , Matt Verri

Fairly average was a generous description of that 90 minutes. Chelsea mediocre, Liverpool woeful.

A result that doesn’t really help either, but there is good news... these two don’t play each other again this season. Thank goodness for that.

Let’s all just forget that happened.

21:53 , Matt Verri

90+3 mins: This has been a really poor finish to a fairly average match.

Liverpool come forward, offside flag halts their progress. Klopp asks how long is left, think everyone just wants this done now.

21:50 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Five minutes added on, as Chelsea come forward again.

James whips a cross in, deflected and Alisson can comfortably claim. He’s in no hurry to boot it up the pitch either.

21:47 , Matt Verri

88 mins: Chelsea pushing, they look the more likely to win it. Salah yet to have a touch really since coming on.

Gakpo gives away a cheap free-kick with Koulibaly under pressure, Liverpool look to just be holding on for a point.

21:44 , Matt Verri

85 mins: Sterling on, Felix off.

Felix was probably Chelsea’s best player, maybe just behind Kante. Unable to produce that clinical edge though.

21:42 , Matt Verri

83 mins: Mudryk able to use that speed as he gets in behind, Gomez just about sticks with him and concedes the corner. Mudryk will take this too.

Felix there at the near post, can’t quite flick it on. Chelsea will get another go though.

21:40 , Matt Verri

80 mins: Jones and Nunez off, Gakpo and Milner on.

Ten minutes for a goal. Fabinho meanwhile seems to be trying his best to get sent off, already gone close to commiting another couple of fouls since the yellow card.

21:37 , Matt Verri

78 mins: Cheers from the crowd as Henderson and Alisson briefly square up. Team-mates not particularly pleased with each other.

Another change from Chelsea, Mudryk is on for Chilwell.

21:35 , Matt Verri

76 mins: Felix scoops a ball over the top towards Fofana, booted out of play. Better spell for Chelsea.

Here they come again, ball nodded down for Felix. Edge of the box, completely free, blasted over the bar.

21:33 , Matt Verri

74 mins: That’s been coming pretty much since the first minute.

Felix misses the ball, looks to turn inside to retrieve it and is swiftly met by Fabinho. Chelsea get the free-kick, Fabinho gets the yellow card.

21:32 , Matt Verri

73 mins: Match feels far more in the balance now, Felix not quite getting on the ball as much.

Havertz caught offside for what feels like the 30th time tonight, not a great night for him so far. Still time to be the hero though...

21:30 , Matt Verri

71 mins: Liverpool fans in fine voice as the visitors win a corner in front of them. Kante off for Chelsea, Salah on for Liverpool... key moment in the match?

Fabinho swings the ball into the box, Matip penalised as he catches Cucurella in the face with a swinging arm.

21:28 , Matt Verri

69 mins: That will be the end of Kante’s night, as he hands the captain’s armband to Kovacic.

Warm ovation from the Stamford Bridge faithful, he’s been really impressive on his return to the starting lineup. Gallagher on in his place.

Nizaar Kinsella at Stamford Bridge

21:27 , Matt Verri

Mateo Kovacic has gone down injured. He hasn’t looked fully fit for most of the game since minorly pulling his groin early on.

Back up for now, as he goes into the book.

21:26 , Matt Verri

67 mins: Kovacic rolling around on the floor, as the referee stands over him waiting to show the yellow card.

Looks like the Chelsea midfielder might have twisted his knee as he challenged Fabinho, before grabbing the ball. Anthony Taylor will have to keep waiting to book him, Kovacic receiving some treatment.

21:25 , Matt Verri

65 mins: Here are those changes for Liverpool.

Tsimikas and Firmino come off, Salah and Robertson introduced. Jota moves into a central position, Salah out on the right with Nunez wide left.

21:23 , Matt Verri

64 mins: Space is opening up, which looks to be suiting Liverpool. Chelsea not quite able to create the chances they were 15 minutes ago.

Looks like Klopp will shortly be turning to his bench, Salah and Robertson getting ready.

Felix goes on another mazy run, into the box but it’s more last-ditch defending from Konate to stretch out a leg.

21:20 , Matt Verri

61 mins: Nunez fancies his chances from distance, comfortable for Kepa.

Won’t be long now until we see some changes, you’d imagine. And Liverpool certainly have the stronger bench, the likes of Salah and Alexander-Arnold waiting in reserve.

Jones the latest Liverpool player into the book, for dissent. Somehow Konate avoids one for a very cynical foul just before.

21:17 , Matt Verri

58 mins: James goes for maximum power from the free-kick, no accuracy to go with it. Hammered well over the bar.

At the other end, Jota looks to slide through Nunez, intercepted. Pretty much the first touch I can remember Jota having all match.

Chelsea straight back on the attack, Felix drifts inside and gets a shot away. Dragged wide.

21:15 , Matt Verri

56 mins: Felix flying forward, two Liverpool players try and bring him down as he does so.

Advantage played, ball bobbles through to Chilwell but then the whistle goes as play is pulled back for the free-kick. Chelsea less than impresed.

Tsimikas into the book for dragging Felix back.

21:13 , Matt Verri

54 mins: A bit flat since that incident, Chelsea have had their momentum halted.

They’ve done absolutely everything other than score tonight. Not scoring though is a fairly big problem.

NO GOAL!

21:10 , Matt Verri

Sums Chelsea up really.

Bounced back off Havertz’s arm, VAR rules it out. So poor from Havertz not to score with the initial effort.

GOAL! Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool | Kai Havertz 50'

21:09 , Matt Verri

CHELSEA SCORE THIS TIME!

Even this wasn’t convincing! Liverpool opened up again, poked finish is saved by Alisson, bounces back off Havertz and rolls into the empty net.

21:07 , Matt Verri

47 mins: First yellow card of the night, as Matip goes through the back of Felix. Bit harsh, considering some of the challenges that were let go before the break.

And then an awful miss. And I do mean AWFUL.

Kante on the stretch plays Kovacic clean through, only Alisson to beat as he drives into the box. Blasts it miles over the bar.

Nizaar Kinsella at Stamford Bridge

21:05 , Matt Verri

As an aside to the football, it was great to see the first break for Ramadan included at a Premier League match at Stamford Bridge.

The new Premier League initiative has been very well received in the Muslim world.

Back underway!

Up and running again at Stamford Bridge!

Liverpool went close late in the half

21:00 , Matt Verri

Nizaar Kinsella at Stamford Bridge

20:56 , Matt Verri

N’Golo Kante has been excellent in the first half, but how long can he sustain it having been out for for over seven months?

As close as we got to a goal...

20:53 , Matt Verri

HT: Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

20:50 , Matt Verri

Not the best. Seven hours since this fixture last produced a goal.

Chelsea the better side and could easily have scored through Felix or Kovacic, but Liverpool finished the half well. Fabinho very nearly put the visitors in front.

Improvement needed from both sides, it would be fair to say...

20:48 , Matt Verri

45+2 mins: Liverpool have woken up!

Gomez from distance, tries his luck and it’s destined for the top corner before Kepa turns it behind for a corner. Time to see if Tsimikas can at least beat the first man this time...

Just about, everyone misses it and falls for Fabinho. Just wide! Fofana turns it wide, brilliant header in front of Kepa.

20:46 , Matt Verri

45+1 mins: Three minutes added on.

Which is a shame, because it means we have to watch three more minutes of this.

Jota briefly threatens to create some excitement, takes too long to get a shot away though and Cucurella gets across.

20:45 , Matt Verri

44 mins: Another great cross in from James, Felix looks to have got across his man but can’t make contact.

Nobody behind him in a blue shirt either waiting for a tap-in, that was a really decent chance for Felix. Flicked a right foot at thin air.

20:42 , Matt Verri

42 mins: Loose pass allows Liverpool to break on the counter, Nunez takes on Fofana out wide and wins a corner for Liverpool. He wanted a free-kick, referee could not have had less interest in his complaints.

Tsimikas with a terrible deliver, booted away by Kante at the near post. Tsimikas has, to put it generously, been dire.

20:41 , Matt Verri

40 mins: Chilwell bursting away down the left, Cucurella tries to pick him out but instead it’s easily intercepted by Gomez.

Chelsea swiftly back on the attack though, James swings a cross in but headed out. Konate then completes the job by clipping the ball away, but Chelsea are coming straight back. Liverpool can’t get out.

20:38 , Matt Verri

38 mins: A rare Liverpool attack, Jota threatens to bundle his way through the Chelsea defence but Fofana sticks out a leg and pokes the ball away.

James and Fabinho then clash as the Chelsea man is cynically tripped on the halfway line. Brazilian fortunate to avoid a yellow card for that.

20:36 , Matt Verri

35 mins: Alisson gets a backpass he doesn’t really want, clearance is charged down by Havertz. Loops up for the German, he tries to flick it back for a team-mate but can’t pick out a blue shirt.

Feels like any goal is going to come from a mistake, plenty of shaky performances out there so far.

20:34 , Matt Verri

33 mins: Bit scrappy since the restart, neither side able to get anything going. Lots of safe possession at the back.

And Chelsea then play the ball straight out of play, not Felix’s finest moment. This fixture may never produce a goal ever again...

Nizaar Kinsella at Stamford Bridge

20:31 , Matt Verri

Co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart are watching on. They will decide the new manager.

In unrelated news, Frank Lampard is also in attendance...

20:30 , Matt Verri

30 mins: Kante with another driving run, slides a pass through to Havertz.

He’s in behind, angle getting narrower and narrower and he drags it badly wide of the far post. Didn’t ever look confident though.

20:29 , Matt Verri

28 mins: Wow. That team-talk from Klopp not exactly having an instant impact. Gomez fires a pass in behind for Jota, who had just halted his run to come short.

Liverpool so fortunate to still be level here, they’ve been second-best by a significant margin.

20:27 , Matt Verri

Konate’s foot very nearly was playing Fernandez on, but the Chelsea man is just about offside. VAR eventually confirms it.

Both sets of players over to the touchline, with the match paused so those observing Ramadan can break their fast.

GOOOOO.... OFFSIDE!

20:25 , Matt Verri

Felix looks to play in Kovacic with a clever header, Gomez turns the ball behind for a Chelsea corner. Chilwell over to take it.

Havertz flicks it on, cleared to James and he hammers it past Alisson... offside!

Brilliant finish but the flag is up. Fernandez was offside a couple of seconds earlier when he very nearly scored. Chelsea denied, though VAR having a look.

20:23 , Matt Verri

22 mins: Klopp not exactly looking thrilled with life on the touchline. His side have not got going at all, the six changes he’s made haven’t had the desired impact so far.

They’re still level though, thanks to some last-ditch defending and some poor finishing.

Nizaar Kinsella at Stamford Bridge

20:21 , Matt Verri

It looks like Liverpool are the team who just sacked their manager and have a coach with only one year of experience.

Chelsea are in complete control early on.

20:20 , Matt Verri

19 mins: Kepa off his line, clears the ball straight to Henderson. Koulibaly well-placed to clear the scuffed shot that comes in with the Chelsea goal wide open.

Firmino has probably been the pick of the Liverpool players so far, the rest of them are struggling to get involved.

20:18 , Matt Verri

17 mins: Felix is so, so sharp. A lovely turn on the edge of the box, opens up the space for the shot but Matip once again produces the block.

Liverpool struggling to get close to Felix in the opening 17 minutes or so, he’s causing them big problems.

20:16 , Matt Verri

16 mins: Liverpool starting to see more and more of the ball, mainly just passing it around at the back though.

They try to move it forward quickly, straight through the middle, but Koulibaly reads it. Chelsea come forward themselves, look far more threatening when they do compared to the visitors.

Familiar story for the Blues though - scoring goals.

Nizaar Kinsella at Stamford Bridge

20:13 , Matt Verri

It’s remarkable to think that amazing 2-2 between Chelsea and Liverpool was last season.

That was one of the best matches I’ve seen in recent years but just over a year later, this one is played at a much lower level.

20:13 , Matt Verri

12 mins: Chelsea really have started well here, look so dangerous going forward.

Chilwell gets in behind Gomez, Havertz is free in the middle and the wing-back picks him up. Havertz tries to flick it over Alisson as he makes the run to the near post, goalkeeper smothers the shot though.

20:11 , Matt Verri

10 mins: Konate out of defence, into midfield and very nearly into the Chelsea box as the Liverpool defender makes swift progress.

That is halted on the edge of the area though, as Cucurella slides in to win the ball back. Greeted by a huge roar from the stands.

Nizaar Kinsella at Stamford Bridge

20:09 , Matt Verri

This game feels a bit midtable so far. Liverpool have been wide open after leaving out several stars with two huge chances missed by Mateo Kovacic and Joao Felix.

Kalidou Koulibaly just passed the ball to Darwin Nunez in a dangerous position but it went unpunished.

20:06 , Matt Verri

6 mins: OFF THE LINE!

Liverpool all over the place, the defending is absolutely woeful in the early stages. Kovacic free in the middle, gets round Alisson but Konate is there sliding in to clear the ball off the line.

Matip then goes flying in on the halfway line, completely cleans out Felix. Free-kick Chelsea.

20:04 , Matt Verri

4 mins: Nearly brilliant from Felix!

Awful pass from Tsimikas and Chelsea are away as Felix runs straight at Matip. Wonderful chop inside, but Matip just about gets across again to block the shot.

Ball loops up for Havertz, volley is there for him but he makes a complete mess of it.

20:02 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Kante straight into the action, drives past Tsimikas out wide and wins an early free-kick for Chelsea. Chilwell or James will whip this in from the right flank.

It’s James, into a decent position but Alisson is off his line to punch it away to safety.

KICK-OFF!

20:00 , Matt Verri

Underway in west London!

Here we go...

19:58 , Matt Verri

Teams are out onto the pitch at Stamford Bridge.

You’d usually expect a fast start from a side that has just lost their manager, but not sure if that rule works when the replacement is a coach from the ‘old’ regime.

Time to find out!

19:53 , Matt Verri

It’s a lovely evening in London, nearly time to find out if the action on the pitch can match the conditions.

The past three matches between the two sides have finished goalless, two of those after 120 minutes of football. Doesn’t exactly bode well, does it...

Hopefully we get some form of entertainment tonight. Anything will do.

Mount to get his chance?

19:46 , Matt Verri

Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount is on the bench against Liverpool, the favourites to sign him in the summer, writes Nizaar Kinsella.

The 24-year-old midfielder will want to prove a point if he gets his chance at some point, not just to Liverpool but also Chelsea as his career hits its first major crossroads.

Graham Potter left him on the bench in three of the last four matches, preferring Joao Felix instead. That fringe status for Mount would have been unthinkable under previous managers, but this is a different Chelsea.

He will hope for a revival under Bruno, though it seems unlikely. Bruno is a coach in Potter’s image and negotiations over a new contract remain stunted.

Klopp on ‘elephant in the room'

19:35 , Matt Verri

Jurgen Klopp is now the Premier League’s longest serving manager, joking that he was lucky to have title as he reflected on the departures of Antonio Conte and Brendan Rodgers from Tottenham and Leicester respectively.

“What can I say about that? I think the elephant in the room is probably, from your point of view, why I am still sitting here in this crazy world,” Klopp said

“Last man standing! I think both clubs are not in the spots where they expect to be, I cannot say a lot more about it. I respect them a lot, to be honest. I like both.

“But still, things can go the wrong way, and when the decision-makers in the club think they have to change, and they change, I think we all accept that part of the business.”

Bruno Saltor’s pre-match thoughts

19:29 , Matt Verri

“I’ve been involved with the process before, I’ve tried with all of the team to pick the best team that we can put on the pitch tonight. In a situation like this it’s always difficult for everyone.

“Experienced players are going to help. A lot of personality in that team, a lot of games for Chelsea and a lot of experience in international games.

“That’s what we need right now, players that are able to deal with this pressure.”

Short-term success still vital for Chelsea

19:25 , Matt Verri

Todd Boehly tapped into the Roman Abramovich playbook by sacking another Chelsea manager, leaving fans asking a familiar question: who’s next?

That will be the big talking point among supporters at Stamford Bridge when the Blues face Liverpool tonight.

The sacking of Graham Potter was well received by supporters, but it has left the plans of Boehly and the Chelsea owners in tatters. They insisted they were different to Abramovich, but have done something the Russian never did in 19 years at the club: sacked two managers in a season.

That has not been lost on critical pundits, but fans just want to see their team improve on dismal form that has left Chelsea languishing in 11th place in the table.

Potter failed to connect with the supporters. In their eyes, he made too many excuses, lacked the personality of former managers Thomas Tuchel, Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho, and could not impact games through his substitutions.

De Zerbi to Chelsea a non-starter

19:11 , Matt Verri

Roberto De Zerbi will not join Chelsea to stay at Brighton with neither parties interested in pursuing a potential deal.

The Italian has been linked with the vacant job at Stamford Bridge but it is understood he is committed to Brighton.

De Zerbi has impressed at Brighton since replacing Graham Potter last year and is focused on their bid to win the FA Cup and qualify for Europe.

Speaking on Monday, De Zerbi expressed his sadness at Potter being sacked by Chelsea.

“I want to say thanks to Graham Potter,” he said. “I have a team with a very good attitude and mentality. I am very sorry. It is bad news for the coaches.”

Interesting to see how long N’Golo Kante lasts in his first start since his hamstring surgery. You have to feel for Graham Potter who only got to use him for 35 minutes during his reign.

Funnily enough, Kante has now made three appearances in a row under three different managers at Chelsea.

Incredible that Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andrew Robertson and Cody Gakpo are all on the bench for Liverpool. Virgil van Dijk missing out through illness.

Van Dijk out with illness

The Athletic report that Van Dijk will miss the match tonight due to illness, a significant blow for Liverpool.

In his absence it’s expected to be Matip and Konate at the back, and it sounds like there’s a fair few other changes from the visitors as well.

Azpilicueta: Sadness at Potter exit

18:46 , Matt Verri

Cesar Azpilicueta has been discussing Graham Potter’s departure in his programme notes this evening.

“We had full respect for Graham and what he wanted to do here, but it didn’t work out,” he wrote.

“We are left with a feeling of sadness that it ends this way. We can only thank him and wish him well in his next step as a manager, and I’m sure he will have great success in the future.”

Key duo benched?

18:38 , Matt Verri

Rumours of a very interesting Liverpool starting lineup.

Some suggestions that both Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah will be on the bench for the visitors tonight, big calls by Jurgen Klopp.

We’ll soon find out.

Issues for Bruno to fix

18:29 , Matt Verri

Revive the superpowers of Reece James and N’Golo Kante

The injury-prone duo are arguably Chelsea’s two best players. Against Liverpool, Kante will play his third match for Chelsea under a third different manager. He played just once for Potter due to a seven-month lay-off after hamstring surgery.

James’s re-injury and muscle problems show how bringing a player back can be botched and is not straightforward.

Perfect evening for it...

Chelsea search continues

18:12 , Matt Verri

Chelsea have made contact with Julian Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique over the vacant managerial post at Stamford Bridge, writes Nizaar Kinsella.

The duo are two of five to seven potential new coaches being lined up to replace Graham Potter, who was sacked on Sunday.

Nagelsmann was already understood to be interested in the job and he has now received a call. The 35-year-old was sacked by Bayern Munich less than a fortnight ago and was planning a break from football. He also prefers to join Chelsea rather than Tottenham.

Enrique would be ready to join Chelsea straightaway and is keen to be interviewed. He was recently sacked by Spain after a disappointing World Cup but previously won the treble at Barcelona. The former Roma coach speaks English and wants to move to a top Premier League club.

Chelsea will take their time to appoint the right coach and are planning to contact at least five potential options. Mauricio Pochettino is braced for contact, along with Eintracht Frankfurt boss Oliver Glasner and Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim.

Standard Sport prediction

18:00 , Matt Verri

Good luck predicting this one. Chelsea could surge back into form with Potter gone or could, perhaps more realistically, continue to struggle with fundamental issues in their squad.

Liverpool, meanwhile, could bounce back from their latest defeat with an improved display as they sense blood against a rival or could, perhaps more realistically, continue to struggle with fundamental issues in their squad.

A 1-1 draw.

Liverpool team news

17:54 , Matt Verri

Darwin Nunez is set to be recalled to the Liverpool starting lineup to face Chelsea tonight.

The forward was on the bench last time out at the Etihad, but should return from the off here. Luis Diaz won’t be involved as his comeback from a long lay-off nears while Thiago Alcantara and Naby Keita are set to miss out.

Klopp admitted that he had “no clue” which of his players will recover in time following the 4-1 loss at the Etihad Stadium, and that he will “wait as long as possible” before picking his line-up.

The Reds boss did, however, assert that there will “definitely” be changes.

Predicted Liverpool XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Tsimikas; Fabinho, Henderson, Elliott; Salah, Gakpo, Nunez.

Chelsea team news

17:47 , Matt Verri

It’s unclear whether Chelsea will continue in the same 3-4-3 system they used under Potter, with Bruno stating in his press conference: “I don’t have to give any clues to Liverpool.”

Last week, Potter said Raheem Sterling and Wesley Fofana could both return to face Liverpool and that may still be the case.

The pair missed the 2-0 defeat at home to Villa over the weekend but were thought to be nearing a return after sitting out matches for their respective national teams.

Thiago Silva remains out along with Edouard Mendy, Cesar Azpilicueta and Armando Broja, leaving Bruno with the majority of the squad to pick from.

N’Golo Kante will likely continue from the bench and, after being an unused substitute at the weekend, Mason Mount could return to face a side rumoured to be interested in signing him.

Predicted Chelsea XI (3-4-3): Kepa; Fofana, Koulibaly, Cucurella; James, Enzo, Kovacic, Chilwell; Havertz, Joao Felix, Mudryk.
