Chelsea vs Southampton player ratings: Timo Werner nets a brace but Saints frustrate Blues

Chelsea were denied late on by Southtampton in the Premier League, leading twice before drawing 3-3 .

Timo Werner showed two brilliant moments of individuality to score his pair, before Danny Ings rounded Kepa to pull one back before half time.

After the break the match was more even, but it took a defensive horror show from the home team to see Saints level. Kurt Zouma’s backpass was short, but Kepa twice missed the ball when trying to tackle it clear, leaving Che Adams the chance to cut back and shoot into the roof of the net.

Kai Havertz then put Chelsea back ahead and Southampton needed a late onslaught of set pieces to nick a point, which came after Theo Walcott bobbled in an injury-time shot, nodded home by Jannik Vestergaard.

Chelsea

Kepa Arrizabalaga - 4. A surprising chance to impress again after Mendy’s injury, but he was woeful for the Saints’ second in particular. Good low save late on but then beaten again in stoppage time.

Cesar Azpilicueta - 6. A solid showing for the most part, though caught out once or twice in one-on-one situations.

Andreas Christensen - 6. Fine in direct duels but struggled to track the movement and runs of Saints’ front two.

Kurt Zouma - 5. A good performance in the first half, but very lax after the break. A poor back-pass let Southampton in to score and his marking was poor too.

Ben Chilwell - 7. Another promising performance as an outlet. Technically another assist too, for the first goal!

Jorginho - 6. Better early in the game when he had time and space on the ball. Later on was rather swamped.

N’Golo Kante - 7. Carried the ball well, showed his usual ability to win the ball all over the park.

Mason Mount - 7. A game full of running and offering himself as an outlet, while doing the dirty work in the other direction too. Not always enough quality on the ball to make a difference, though.

Kai Havertz - 6. On the ball he showed some excellent moments, scored a goal and got into great areas, particularly with a header sent off-target. But in possession he was also slow at times, was easily pushed off and lost the ball in a bad area for Saints’ first.

Christian Pulisic - 6. First league start in some time and showed some flashes of why he’ll quickly be key again.

Timo Werner - 9. Work rate, runs in behind, one assist and two absolutely fantastic individual goals with composed finishes.

Southampton

Alex McCarthy - 5. Couldn’t do too much with the goals. Distribution not always the best.

Kyle Walker-Peters - 6. Not as much of an outlet as Saints usually like him to be.

Jan Bednarek - 6. Never really got close to Werner all game long.

Jannick Vestergaard - 6. Slow and lacking agility against an attack with lots of movement. Got a vital touch for the late equaliser.

Theo Walcott - 7. Created a succession of chances with a simple but effective approach and claimed an assist late on when his shot was diverted in.

Oriol Romeu - 6. Poor in the first half but impressed as Saints started to take control.

James Ward-Prowse - 7. Combative when he needed to be and was the man to get his foot on the ball in the second half and start to send play the other way.

Nathan Redmond - 5. Ineffective most of the game.

Danny Ings - 8. His usual non-stop dynamo of a performance, with a well-taken goal and the perseverance to create chances.

Che Adams - 7. A goal and an assist as reward for another game of endeavour and running.
