The transfer window is officially open meaning Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca can now start to tweak his squad for the 2024/25 Premier League season.

On paper, the current crop of players at the Italian's disposal at Stamford Bridge has already proved their ability to compete and get results. Yet after finishing sixth last term, the Blues will be hoping to return to the UEFA Champions League and finally pay-off the £1billion investment from Todd Boehly.

The pressure of Maresca's head has been talked-up ever since he was announced as Mauricio Pochettino's replacement. However, he's expected to be backed in the transfer window with a number of areas requiring attention.

A new goalkeeper and striker have both been prioritised by sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart. Perhaps one of the most important positions that must be assessed is at centre-back.

Levi Colwill, Axel Disasi and Thiago Silva all played their fair share of games for Chelsea last season. Injuries for Trevoh Chalobah, Benoit Badiashile and Wesley Fofana meant minutes on the pitch were limited. The position has been a consistent problem with no time to form a colossal partnership.

Maresca's options will once again be tight with Silva leaving the club to return to Brazil and Chalobah wanted by a number of clubs. Tosin Adarabioyo has already completed his free transfer arrival from Fulham but there continues to be interest elsewhere.

Of course, you could argue that another addition isn't needed. However, the injury problems at Cobham over the last two years means the strongest duo have rarely been available at the same time.

Fofana won't be rushed back after missing the entirety of last season due to an ACL injury. Disasi and Badiashile have both proved crucial at times, but once again, their separate injury problems have been a concern.

football.london understands Badiashile has interest from AC Milan but no movement has yet happened with a potential exit. Should one of the current options leave, then Chelsea are likely to consider making a move.

One player who fits the bill to what Maresca wants from his centre-backs is Bayern Munich's Matthijs de Ligt. The Netherlands defender is reportedly one of many players on the German champions' list of players available for transfer this summer.

Manchester United have been credited with interest in the 24-year-old to bolster Erik ten Hag's defensive line but Chelsea have more than enough reasons to be tempted in hijacking any deal.

At only 24 with over 350 club appearances already, he fits the profile that Chelsea have become renowned for signing. After bursting onto the scene with Ajax, De Ligt has struggled to find himself a home in football and a long-term deal in west London could tempt him.

Silva's departure means Maresca's team seriously lacks any sort of leadership, especially in defence. The signing of the Dutchman would fill that void and simply improve the backline.
