Cheltenham Festival: Which UK region is the most profitable?

The 2017 Cheltenham Festival is finally upon us, with the action getting underway tomorrow. Oddschecker have had a look at which regions won and lost the most at last year’s festival to try and predict where the money will be going this year. There are some interesting trends amongst them, with some you would expect to be more astute about horse racing and some that you wouldn’t.

Liverpool seem to have the most astute Cheltenham bettors, with an average profit of £99.86 per person. Could they have known something everyone else didn’t with the win of Un Temps Pour Tout in the Ultima Handicap Chase on day one?

It also seems the tradition of horse racing, with Aintree racecourse just outside the city centre, is still holding strong with Liverpool accounting for the second highest average stake per person, at just over £415.

Higher stakes evidently don’t translate to higher profits though, with Fife averaging a £642.40 during Cheltenham 2016 but ended the festival, on average, £193.90 in the red.

The cities in the UK that turned a profit, on average per user, were Cambridge (£99.86), Canterbury (£12.62), Essex (£14.68), Dublin (£19.84), Worcester (£29.56), Brighton (£21.55) and Leeds (£50.90).
